Alien Hate Campaign Against "America" Continues

(Boston Transcript) Much discussion has been caused among Roman Catholic and Protes

tant clergy In New Jersey by the!

condemnation of the hymn America" as out of place- in Catholic schools In the Monitor. a Catholic weekly published in Newark, N. J.

On the editorial page of the Monitor Is carried the indorsement and approval of the publication in letters from Bishop John J0'Connor, New

ark, and Bishop James A. M. Fail I

Trenton. Referring to the hymn,

the Monitor sots forth:

"It will not be out of place to sound a note of warning against the singing of 'America1 by the pupils of Catholir educational Institutions. The doggerel lim's so dear to the hearts of all Anglomanlacs' should never bo lipard within the walls of a

Catholic school or a Catholic college. Unlike the 'Star Spangled Llauner,' they do not generate a true iiational spirit. 'America' U essentially sectional." "If any of our readers,", says the Monitor, "happen to be present on an occnslon when thi3 offense' shall be repeated, we advise them to hiss, and hiss vigorously. No matter if they disturb-the licrmony of the proceedings. Their doing so will help to bring on the true character of 'America,' which should never be sung at a Catholic gathering."

CLEVELAND, O., Sept. 22. The taxpayers of Cuyahoga county will face an increase of 12 per cent in taxes this fall or an estimated sum of $4,865,000 because of the increase In land valuation by the county board of revision, W. I. Lewis, president of the Cleveland Association of Building Owners and Managers, said recently. The sum of $3J00,000 increase in taxes this year is duo to the action of the board of education In requesting the board oT revision to increase the land va'uatidna 20 per cent, Mr.

Lewis charged.

"As a result of the methods employedjby the board of education to secure temporary financial relief, taxpayers will be. required to pay In excess of $2,000,000 to other taxing districts which did not appeal to the board of revision : for additional funds," Mr. Lewis said. , . Given Greater Leeway "Under the law, however, the $8,100,000 must be levied bo that the board of education can receive the

$1,000,000 desired. The balance will

be distributed in the county and city. By the increase in tha tax duplicate the ' city is automatically given greater leeway in the issue of bonds, without the vote of the people. "The right of the board of revision to authorize the increase is not questioned. But the Association of Buildr ing Owners and Managers believes the taxpayers should kirbw that the board of education is responsible for

an unnecessary increase of $2,000,000 not available for the board of education but made available for taxing

districts that made no request for additional funds. "The board of education could have availed itself of the provisions of House Bill No, 34 without affecting the revenues of other taxing districts for temporary relief. It did not, however, see fit to do this."

PITTSBURG, Pa., Sept. 21. While three candidates for important county offices, known to be favorable to tha Ku Klux -Klan, have been con

ceded victories In the primary election held here Tuesday, late returns may increase the number to four and possibly more. Results in outlying

boroughs show favorable returns for candidates said to be Klansmen or favorable to the organization. The candidates are men that are known to be open minded on the question

of the organization, and were elected

by large majorities in different dls

tracts of Lawrence county. Reports

indicated the hottest fight of the campaign was waged in Newcastle, Pa.,

the seat of Lawrence county, and in

the majority of cases candidates that

had been endorsed and supported by the members of the Ku Klux Klan

Avere nominated.

EAST ROCKAWAY, L. I., Sept. 23. The Ku Klux Klan was the winner

of the, .popularity contest held here last week' at the carnival of the Vol

unteer Firemen's Association and was awarded a large American flag. It polled 57,000 votes, while the near

It was said the Knights of Columbus, now that they lost the contest, may be reprimanded by the authorities of the Catholic church for permitting the use of the organization's name in the contest.
