HELENA. Mont, Sept. 25. Last Friday night, Helena Klan met on their regular meeting ground, and thoroughly enjoyed a lecture delivered by the editor of the Tri-State
American. Helena has a large membership ot the best citizens of that section of the country. They recently elected city officers to the uttor astonishment and bewilderment of the old gang; showing that right will triumph, and that gang rule has been relegated to the dead past and hence
forward men hoping to be elected must be real men of unquestionable character who can positively be depended upon to enforce the law without fear or favor, and without hope of personal aggrandizement, and who do not aspire to build up a political machine, and who will not serve for selfish booty, but who will stand with head erect and face uplifted, and challenge the lawless element in the practice of their nefarious conduct.

local Ku Klux Klan on Rayl hill, about six miles west of Hutchinson on the Fourth Avenue road, last Monday evening, according to a report received following the ceremony. The scene of the meeting was a large open pasture to the north of the road, a short distance east of where President Harding harvested wheat on his visit to Kansas. Grouped around a huge flaming cross about twenty-five feet high, arranged in a large circle about 600 yards in diameter, were more than
400 automobiles. Fifty candidates were initiated into the Klan in the Ceremonies which took place in-the brilliant light of the burning cross. Ceremonies Opened by Prayer Ceremonies were opened by prayer
and singing of "America." Initiation of new members followed. After a business session an address was delivered by a local speaker. When the crowd dispersed about 10 p. m., the long line of automobiles which filed into the road made a parade of more than two miles long.

nel Nelson, who used to dictate the
policies of the Kansas City Star, made a great newspaper out of it In
his day because he demanded that its
columns be kept strictly accurate
and its editorials fair to everyone.
The colonel would have turned
over in his grave on August 25, last, If he had been able to read the fol
lowing eminently "fair" quotation from the sheet which he founded:
'Down south the Klanners never
let their 100 per cent Americanism get far below par. The minute they
see it drop a point or two they ride out and catch a minister's wife and
give her a flogging."
The Kansas City Star at present
is suffering from fatty degeneration of the business office, it Is said,
caused by the fact that Its editorials are written on a cash register. Tri-

WASHINGTON, D. C, Sept. 25. Authorized last April by Its book
committee, the plan of the Methodist
Episcopal church to establish a press
service at the. national capital is nearing completion. It is now expected that the service will begin to function the first of October under
the direction of Dr. Henry E. Woolever of New York state. That great Christian brotherhood publishes more than a dozen periodicals in various parts of the United States. It is hoped that the new
national press service will be able to
supply to the entire Methodist press authentic news from the capital city on matters of interest to the Christian 'public. The Methodist Board of Temperance, Prohibition and Public Morals has for years rendered invaluable service. It is soon to "be housed in the commodious new edifice nearing completion for that purpose. The press service should greatly enhance the power of such work.

. Religion is not a defunct relic of civilization, says a voice reassuringly from an editorial observatory. The mind of America is striving for
higher ideals; "there is a prevalent
wish to extend the gospel ot the
Golden Rule." It is refreshing, amid all the alarms about the impending
crash . of civilization, the relegation of religion to the limbo of forgotten
pagan rites, and the ' war within the
Church," to hear this note of com
fort: "There is a marked and rising
appeal for the evangelization of America. There was never a time
when the average man was more
ready for a warm and considerate
presentation of. the Christian faith
The feeling is not for America alone,
goes on the Los Angeles Times.
'There is also a hope and wish that
organized Christianity exert its be
neficent influence in the solution of
the large problems of the world. We
can not stay out of international at
fairs, if we would, and we would not If we could. If these questions are
approached in the spirit indicated
by the Man of Galilee, their settlement might be accomplished with
less trial and tragedy." And "fewer
scars would be left behind."
It is also felt, we are told, that
the churches should take part in the
confrontation of those who would undermine our laws, either by open defiance or subtle nullification. In
this task, and in others, the church
is not called on to draw the sword
but to exert its influence, to set its
example and to urge its purpose
"with a vigor not to be misunder
stood. In support of this optimism
it is recited that
"It is easy to raise dbubts. It is
easy to make allegations that de

statements will ever receive atten
tion. There is, however, evidence
that the world Is growing better in
some ways. politically and
economically, many nations are still upset and may remain so until the
people dismount their politicians.
But through it all there Is a quiet but
Steady turning to religion." The Literary Digest.
NEW YORK, Sept. 25. The New York American, a Hearst paper, carried the following editorial on Governor Smith's congratulations to Jewish merchants backing schools for- their race. Whether Catholics and Jews force Hearst to refute the editorial is anxiously awaited by Protestants here. The editorial follows: -. Governor Al Smith of New York, who is described as a candidate for
the presidency, congratulates the Jewish Educational Association on its plan to take 10,000 children from the streets and give them "a school
ing in the Jewish religion." That is
a noble plan. But Mr. Smith's letter says,-"no- state or country can long endure which neglects to, inculcate the principles of morality and religion in the minds and hearts of Us young people." Should Rend Constitution If Mr. Smith really intends to be president it would be a good idea for
him to read the Constitution of the
United States. He will learn that the stafe, as such, has nothing to do
with "inculcating religion." That the constitution forbids. It is left to the .. parents, churches, Sunday
schools and religious schools. The business of the nation is to teach
facts that all accept, leaving re
vealed religion, the teaching of miracles, etc., whether Jewish, Christian,
Mohammedan, Christian Science or what not, to the various religious specialists and enforcing tolerance
for all religions. Many a government has gone down because it mixed religion with government. They are and should remain separate. They will remain separate
here.
