SWERVING TO KLAN SEEN AT STREATOR
Thirty Thousand Klansmen Attend Big Meeting Large Class Candidates Initiated
LAW ENFORCEMENT

Burning of Barn and Cutting of
Phone Wires Raises Ire -at Hartford" City
(By Staff Correspondent) STREATOR, 111., Sept. 24. A most notable swerving toward the Ku Klux Klan has been felt here in the past ten days. Although the Klan was being received here with favor and was growing nicely, an increased impetus has evidently followed a big meoting held here by the Klan on Labor day. The meeting has had the effect, it would seem, of showing
more intimately to the public at
largo the high class, of citizens who are members of the organization. On Labor day more than 80,000 persons attended the Klan meeting
during the day. From early morning
a continual stream of autos carried
Klansmen to the scene of the -meeting, which was held on a forty-acre
tract of ground on which a beauu
ful wood'is situated. On the grounds is a natural amphitheater in which
thousands of Klansmen crowded to
hear the principal address of the
day which was given during the afternoon. Zouaves Furnish Feature One of the features of the day was a team of Zouaves, which are connected with the Odd Fellow lodge, and which gave a thrilling exhibition drill. Not a mishap marred the day despite the thousands of machines
which made their way to the meeting. The traffic rules were as near perfect as is possible to make them and the handling of traffic was carried out with precision. In the evening a gorgeous" display of fireworks was staged and a cere
monial was held in which a large class of candidates were initiated into the organization. The meeting was held under the guidance of the La Salle county Klan and was a most successful undertaking. That it made a most favorable impression upon the residents of La Salle county is seen in the everincreasing number of applications for membership in the Klan organization.

HARTFORD CITT, Ind., Sept. 4. Increased growth in the ranks of the Ku Klux Klan is seen here dur
ing the past few weeks. That the Klan has been strong In Blackford county for some months past has been known but the fact that the growth has been much more rapid recently is established. The sudden Jump in membership is attributed to the fact that following a threat received by a business man here that his barn would be burned, and the "threat carried out, because the victim of the firebugs had signed certain affidavits against law breakers. It is also stated that the telephone wires leading to the man's residence were cut. Among those arrested at the time
the affidavits were filed is a former official who, it is said, made a rash statement at the time of the arrest. The whole matter, it seems, has stirred the community to a greater
desire for law enforcement with the result that the Klan has enjoyed a most wonderful increase in membership of late.
CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky., Sept. 23. Despite the fact that a few young ruffians threw eggs at the speaker.
and they struck and spattered over spectators, the meeting given here by the Ku Klux Klan on last Monday night was a huge success. The speaker was greeted with enthusiasm and held the big audience in rapt attention until he had spoken the last word. It was the second time the speaker had delivered an qddress in this place and the crowd was twice the size' of the first gathering. There had been a report that the lecturer had been run out of town on
his first appearance and therefore
would not attempt to 6peak here
again. This report was far from true
and had no Effect on the attendance whatsoever. Campbellsville is located in Taylor county and the Klan ia growing rapidly throughout the county.
AURORA HOMECOMING PROVES BIG SUCCESS Fifty Thousand Attend Celebration Filled With Thrills One Thousand Initiated (Special to The Fiery Cross)
AURORA, 111., Sept 22. Between 45,000 and 50.000 Klansmen assem
bled in Aurora on last Saturday at the biggest open-air meeting ever held by the Klan in northern Illinois.
Klansmen from Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Iowa, Minnesota and other states, partici
pated in the huge homecoming as planned by the Klan. It was declared by hundreds of Klansmen to be the "greatest since Kokomo." The ceremonies started "early in the morning and lasted throughout
the day. They were concluded with a gigantic display of fireworks which
followed immediately after a ceremonial in which more than one thou
sand candidates were taken into the
organization. f Every Convenience Provided Every convenience had .been provided for the visiting Klansmen who
with their families were treated to a continuous program of thrills
throughout the day and evening. One of the features of the program was
a sensational parachute jump by a Klansman. The latter also put on thrilling airplane stunts. There were also airplane races during the afternoon.
. Ample parking space was provided motorists and practically no traffic Jams ensued due to the perfectly planned traffic rules and regulations and large number of Klansmen acting as traffic police. x The entire "day was a frolic, of fun
ended by a solemn ceremonial and
topped off with the pyrotechnic display which was staged at a cost of f2,600. Prizes were awarded to those visiting Klans which showed the greatest number of members pres
ent This was also extended to members of the Women of the Ku Klux Klan on the same basis. Many speakers of prominence were on the program and a number of most brilliant addresses were de
livered during the day. One of the
chief speakers was from Atlanta,
Georgia.
During the afternoon a spectacular pageant was enacted in .-which
the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan were depicted as the . staunch defenders of the little red schoolhouse and the protector of American lib
erties.
Klan bands and quartets furnished
music for the many events, which
were inspirational and educational
as well as entertaining in their wide variety. Band concerts were fre Client events on the program. Hundreds Arrive Friday
Hundreds of the-JClansmen arrived
in Aurora (Friday evening and when
the sun arose on Saturday morning all roads leading to this city car
ried steady streams of autoists into the city. Special trains brought hun
dreds upon hundreds. Long before the noon hour it was estimated that more than 35,000 visitors were then at the scene of the festivities. It is conceded here by opponent of the Klan as well as those favoring It that Saturday was the biggest day that Aurora had ever known. Naught but praise could be heard from the visitors in speaking of the treatment accorded them and of the hospitality shown them -by the citizens of Aurora. The entire affair was one huge success from the beginning to the end.

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY IS GOING TO KLAN
Believed Everyone Eligible Will Be in Organization by First of Year
(Special to The Fiery Cross) ST. JOSEPH, 111., Sept. 22 Much interest is being manifested in the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan and at a recent meeting held here the speaker was cheered during his address when he spoke on the principles of the Klan. A marked difference of opinion is now being held by which the Klan has benefitted. St. Joseph is situated about ten miles from Champaign, which is the county seat of Champaign county, and is right in the midst of tffat ter
ritory over which a series of lectures pertaining to the Klan is being held. A crowd of about d,000 persons were In attendance at the meeting held here ami despite the fact that the speaker - was delayed in arriving, no one left. During the meeting the audience sang patriotic songs and a band gave a short concert. To (Jet All Eligibles At the rate which residents are
now joining the Klan organization, it is believed here that every eligible in this county will have become a member before the first of next year. The growth of the Klan here is in keeping with the rest of the state and the greatest enthusiasm is felt here. A noticeable trend toward the Klan has been in evidence here for several months, but more recently this trend has taken on new . speed with the result that the Klan is gaining membership in St. Joseph and Champaign county at a most phenomenal rate.
MORE INITIATIONS HELD AT KALAMAZOO
KALAMAZOO, Mich., Sept. 22. At
a closed meeting of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan here last Friday
evening, a class of. seventy-five candidates were naturalized in the initiation ceremonies of the Invisible Empire in the soft glow of an electric fiery cross. All lights in the hall were turned off, with the exception of the cross, while the oath of Americanism was administered. There were about 250 persons at the meeting to witness the ceremonies. It is understood that other initiations will take place in the near future' here. .
KLAN IS STRONG AT 0W0SS0, SAYSREP0RT
OWOSSO. Mich., Bept. 22. Several fiery crosses have been burned hereabouts in the past few weeks and It is believed that there is a local Klah being formed, but owing to the secrecy with which that organization works, nothing definite has been learned. It has been rumored, however, that the Klan is stronger here than any one has any idea. x
(By Henry Gallagher, High School Student and Member of the DeMolay of Pensacola, Fla., who won the first prize offered by the Scottish Rite of that city.) The home life is the cradle, nay, it is the very parent and foundation
of Americanism. The home life raises the standard of Americanism or lowers it, according to its average product. On an average, people remain at their home from fifteen to twenty years. It is these first years of a person's life that determine his or her future course in life. If the av
erage are of good home training,
they hold up American Ideals; if not, they lower the ideals. Therefore, every parent should be very careful in the raising and training of their children, for they are the ones that will determine Americanism and American Ideals in the future. The parents of today do not seem to control and restrain the children as the parents of an earlier generation. They argue that they are exercising democracy, but in many cases the seeming democracy becomes license. Must Uphold Ideals
It Is this generation that must hold up the American ideals of today;
their children must uphold them in
the future, and if they are not brought up and trained with those ideas and ideals, what will the future ideals be? . The higher standard of Americanism can not be upheld in ignorance, th& people must be educated so that they may understand and recognize Americanism and uphold, if not heighten it. They must learn from histories the old Ideals so that the new may be as good, the same, or better, but by all means never let them degenerate. The schools are therefore very important and second only to home life
in creating in, and teaching the people the higher ideals or, I might say,
Americanism, lor Americanism is a standard of higher ideals, the transmuting of dreary days of work into happier lives. The children are sent to school; it is compulsory. Some say that this
is not democratic, but would it be democratic if a young child of no
experience were allowed to choose for himself? The schools have been organized and are aided by the state and national governments. They have teachers for physical training, for healthy bodies make healthy minds. They have vocational teachers to aid a pupil in selecting some work that is agreeable to him. This gives the pupil a right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. For any man
without agreeable work has not life, he may have existence; he has not liberty, for he is a slave to something he despises; he has not happiness, for a work that Is not agreeable rouses in him a hatred for it and a revulsion to It. Schools a Great Factor In this way the schools are a great factor in forming the American
Ideals', by enlightening the people. How can we measure Americanism? The only fit yard-stick to measure It by, the only fit scale to weigh it by is the constitution, the preamble of which shows this: "We, the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, secure domestic tranquillity, provide for common defense, promote general welfare, and secure the blessings of
liberty for ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this constitution for the United States of
America."
By this7 and this alone, can we truly measure Americanism. The standard of Americanism, therefore,
Is measured by the extent the people
observe and obey the constitution,
The people must first get their
training to obey from their home life
and then be educated so that they
may read and observe the constitution. All this tends to make good citizens, and the average of good citizens tends to raise or lower Americanism or American Ideals.
ADDRESS AT ELIZABETHTOWN ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky., Sept. 22.
J Despite the fact that it was known
that the opposition had gunmen from
Bardstown in the crowd, there was no trouble experienced at a Klan meetnig given here on last Wednesday night. The only disturbance was when a gang of rowdies threw eggs at the speaker which went wide of their mark and struck some spectators. The audience was very attentive throughout the address. The opposition placed a stenog
rapher within a few feet of the speaker, who delivered his address from the courthouse steps after hav
ing gained permission to do so from the .county officials. Just what was
to be gained by this move has not been ascertained. The Klan in Hardin county, in which Elizabethtown is situated, is
enjoying a most rapid and substantial growth at this time. That the residents are much in favor of the organization is seen in the big crowd present at the meeting and the scores
signifying their intention of Joining the organization at the close of the speech.
MAYOB TAKES STAND VlNEGROVE, Ky., Sept. 23. Fol
lowing all attempts by the opposition to halt a Klan meeting here last night, a large crowd listened attentively to a lecture on .the principles
of the Ku Klux Klan given by a most fluent speaker who quoted freely from the Bible during his entire talk.
Enemies of the Klan organization had gone to the mayor of this place and attempted to secure his word that he would stop the meeting. The mayor informed them-that there was no law under which he had a right to do so and would take no step toward that end. The executive added that he would arrest any one guilty of starting? trouble regardless of who they were. No trouble was experienced during the meeting.
Indianapolis Proprietors of Chili Parlors Want None But Klux on Guard at Resorts and Factory
A report is sent us from Indianapolis in regard to Dory C. j Blacker, who, with his brother Lawrence," own a chain of chili parlors in that city. The story is important if true, for Mr. Blacker does a very large business and many of his patrons are those who are decidedly opposed to Kluxism, of which the Blackers seem to be ardent exponents. Mr. Dory Blacker, of course, in piling up a neat little fortune, of which he is said to be the possessor, did not make his appeal to "white, Protestant, gentile, native-born Americans," but to all classes of citizens. We never heard of either of the Blackers ever turning down
any man's money, white, black, Gentile or Jew. Now why the
sudden change of heart? Are the Blacker brothers tired of
receiving money from others than those constituting the Klan ?
If so, they ought to let the world know it and not sail around
under false colors. They ought to rig up a fiery cross in front
of each of their establishments and they would then be con
ducting business on the square. As it stands, if the report is true, they are getting money under false pretenses, for there
are thousands of decent, right-thinking Americans adverse to
the Klan who would not want to give their money to men who
hate them even as they take it. .
A TWO-EDGED SWORD An Indianapolis Business Man's Answer to Tolerance Another prominent Indianapolis business man has been write
ten up in that un-American, hate-disseminating miscalled sheetL Tolerance. Dory C. Blacker owns and operates six successful
businesses in Indianapolis, in which he" employs approximately
one hundred persons. It is quite true that he does not discrimi
nate as to his patrons, his one aim being to constantly impress
on his employes that they must please each and every customer.
His is no small concern in the busmeses world and, of course.
being a man of successful business judgment, he leaves religion, politics, etc., on"" the outside. One of his unalterable rules is that his employes shall not discuss these subjects on-duty.
Dory C. Blacker is a thirty-second degree Mason, an Elk and
a Protestant. Patrons conducting- themselves as ladies and gentlemen in his restaurants are. treated with absolute courtesy. Numbered among Mr. Blacker's most personal friends are both Jews and Catholics and he has come to their rescue more than one time, financially and otherwiser
The suggestion that he place a fiery cross on his labels, he
feels is mere child's talk and entirely beneath his notice.
Below are listed a few of his employes: let the readers of
Tolerance be the judge whether or not these highly-respected citizens of Indianapolis compose the riff-raff and low characters
tnat. tolerance has claimed:
MEETING AT SONORA SONORA, Ky., Sept. 22. A large crowd turned out here on Thursday night of this week to hear a lecture on the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. The speaker received a warm welcome and the meeting was a decided success. Much sentiment has been created in this vicinity in favor tf the Klan.
One of the Blacker resorts is on Indiana avenue in Indianap
olis, where hundreds of negroes reside,- and Blacker is anxious
for the "bucket trade" of the colored people. Another resort is
located on Massachusetts avenue, in a neighborhood where many
foreign-born live. Blacker, of course, wants their money.
Again, purchasers of chili con carne and other Blacker
products over the country should know that the Blacker brothers hate all Catholics, Jews, negroes and foreign-born. Since there
are quite a number of competing chili con carne manufacturers, the knowledge that the Blacker brothers do not like Catholics,
Jews, negroes and foreign-born might serve to dissuade such
citizens from patronizing men who take delight in' membership in a society hostile to them. Each can of Blacker products should carry a fiery cross as a trade mark. But that report! It is quite interesting. Here it is :' ?
SPEAKER AT HODGINSTILLE HODGINSVILLE, Ky., Sept. 23. Following the cancellation of a permit issued a speaker for the Ku Klux Klan to use the courthouse steps, the address was delivered at the depot before a large crowd of persons eager to hear the address. The reason given for the withdrawal1 of the permit was that of "obstructing traffic." The little change, however, made but small difference and the big gathering quietly moved to the location and less than an hour's de
lay was caused. The speaker was
greeted with much aplause during his address. .

Indianapolis, Ind., September 7, 1928. Dory C. Blacker, Kluxer, residing at 547 Parker avenue, Indianapolis, Ind runs a chain of chili parlors located at the following places: 655
Massachusetts avenue, 46 TV est Ohio street, 134 South Illinois street, restaurant and hotel at 542 Massa

Blacker is one of the Indianapolis KlaveTn Kluxers who employs nothing else but Kluxer help. one of his help Is listed in the city directory, being composed entirely of drifters and riff-raff that the better class of restaurants will not hire. Blacker's chill resorts are the hangouts for dancehall cakeeaters and the underworld. .Young women with
rouged cheeks abound. The resorts start to bloom abotft midnight and
go big from then en until morning.
Numerous lights, In which sugar
bowls, catsup bottles, and anything
throwable fly about, make this an
ideal place for the thug element to
congregate. One example 'of the kind of in
dlviduals employed Is shown by the fact that when Kluxer Earl Davis, formerly a motorcycle policeman,
was discharged from the police force for getting drunk while on duty, he
at once went to work for the Kluxer
Blackers as salesman of their chili
con carne products. It would be interesting to discover
how many Catholics, Jews and
negroes buy Kluxer Blacker's prodnets throughout the state of Indiana. The general reputation of the Blacker resorts in Indianapolis is so unsavory that no decent, self-respecting person, regardless of creed or
color, will go into them. However,
his Klannlsh Klansmen should sup

white mule parties which It la at

If a man Can't inarch Under his own flag Where In Heaven's Name Can, he inarch under it?
(Special to Fiery Cross) BURXINGTON, Ky., Sept. 24. A crowd estimated at close to two thousand persons listened in rapt attention to an address delivered here on Monday night of last week when a speaker gave to the big crowd the principles of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. The meeting had heen scheduled for 7:30 but was changed
to a later honr so that it would not interfere with a meeting being held in the Baptist church. The announcement was made at the Baptist church on Sunday evening by the minister. The Bpeaker delivered an eloquent
appeal to patriotism of the people of this oounty and was warmly received. Great Interest was manifested throughout the address and
today naught but favorable comment Is heard In connection with the Klan
here.
The fact that the Klansmen haw
substantially aided the Baptist church of this city in a financial way has brought much favorable com
ment. The, first publio appearance
of the Knights in their regalia was
one night; last week.
