TRIAL FLIGHT OF ZK-1 TO BE IN SEPTEMBER
First of Its Type Ever Built in - America May Fly to North Pole
WASHINGTON, Sept 8. The plan
of Chairman Madden of the House appropriations committee for exten
sive tax reductions by the next Con
gress ran against a snag when he laid it before President Coolidge.
Representative Green of Iowa
slated for the chairmanship of the House ways and means committee,
which has Jurisdiction, over all tax
and revenue legislation, returned to the capital and announced his oppo
sition to any program far modifica
tion of the tax law at this time.
Chairman Green stated that he
would go to the White House Friday
to submit his position to the President.
Smoot Also Opposed
Already Senator - Smoot, who is scheduled to become chairman of the Senate finance committee, which likewise has jurisdiction over all tax legislation in the upper branch
of Congress, has declared his oppo
sition to proposed tax cats. He has
presented his views to the President
at two conferences.
Ordinarily, opposition by the
chairmen of the two committees hav
ing jurisdiction over any given leg
islation is sumcient to kill it.

Mammoth Hangar Mammoth," "m onster" and
'giant" are the only words that are
at all adequate to describe the new
airship and the hangar at Lakehurst,
N. J., where she has been assembled
and is now housed. Even they do
not convey concrete conceptions of
size and the dimensional figures ; when they are stated are more be
wildering than impressive.
When we are told that the ZR-1 is
680 feet in length and that the hull has a diameter of seventy-nine feet
with a total gas capacity of 2,115,000
cubic feet, we know that she is big, but as to Just how big the mind re
mains a bit hazy.
When we are informed that the
Lakehurst hangar's inside dimen
sions are, roughly, 800 feet Jn length by 250 feet in width and 170 feet in height, we know that it Is immense, but the figures still leave us with only a vague idea of what they
mean.
A Mental Picture
However, when it is stated that
the ZR-1, if brought down in a suf
ficiently wide city street, would
overlap considerably two standard
city squares in length and would
tower to the height of the ordinary eight-story building, we may get a
mental picture of the airship that
conveys approximately a real idea
of her size.
And when we are told that the
hangar would cover almost three
city blocks, that two average twelvestory office buydings could be pushed through its doors side by
side and lost in the interior, or that three baseball games could be
played within it at one time with
out one encroaching upon another in the slightest, we begin to realize
what "mammoth" means when the
word is applied to the Lakehurst
structure.
BARNBSVILLE, O., Sept, 8. The citizens of this city received their first introductjpn to the activities of the Ku Klax Klan, when the Klan marched through the principal streets in white robes. A tremendoas gathering witnessed the initia
tion of candidates at the city park. Two fiery crosses lighted the scene of activities. The crosses were fifty
feet high. There were 10,000 Klans
men and spectators present at the
ceremonies, and a large number of
candidates.
It would be difficult to estimate
the size of the crowd, although some thought that there were, 10,000 Klansmen and spectators at the cere
monies on the park grounds. The grandstand was filled, while the race track, and the circle inside for a distance of several feet and the grounds outside the fence were thronged. Automobiles Jammed practically every bit of parking space at the grounds and backed up on North
Chestnut street clear to the railroad. ' Klansmen made their first appear- -ance about 5 o'clock Saturday evening, taking up posltkHui along Mala and Chestnut streets to direct traffic ' and to give information. Some of them took positions on prominent corners and with loided arms stood
fixed like statnes except when some one asked them questions. Several also acted as traffic cops. The parade was not as large as expected, requiring eight minutes to pass a point. At the head of the parade two men withyisors ip. evidently high Klan officials, rode on horseback. Behind them came a band playing "Onward, Christian Soldiers," and hehlnd the band, robed Klansmen, another band, a number of women and antes filled with robed Klansmen. One of the antes carried a large cross lighted with red, white and blue, bulbs. Placards, setting forth things tor which the organization stands, were carried. Following tee initiation, two speakers gave addresses and one of
these was loud enough to be Heard in part as far away as Walton avenue. A brilliant display of fireworks concluded the "Klonklave," In martced contrast to riots at Springfield. SteubenvUle, Carnegie. Pa and elsewhere, there wasnt the semblance of any trouble in Barnes-vUle.
