RETURNED ON CHARGE k OF WRECKING BANK

r BOSTON, Mass., Sept. S. Joseph B. Marcino, formerly 01 Chicago, brought here yesterday from Houston, Tex., to face trial on the charge of wrecking the First National bank In Warren, Mass., last February, admitted that he took $213,000 in securities from the bank, according to Assistant United States Attorney

John V. Sullivan. Marcino declared he knew where the bonds were and hoped that the bank would recover every dollar, Sullivan said. Marcino explained his action, Sullivan said, by claiming that when he took the securities he "was oppressed In his business ventures and for the time being had lost his reason." . "I fully intended to replace the bonds," Marcino was quoted as saying, "and my only desire now-Is to aid in their recovery."

Legislature Kills Bill Aimed at the Klan

KALISPELL, Mont, Sept. 10. For the second time within a month a fiery cross, believed to be the emblem of the Ku Klux Klan, blazed on the Buffalo hill just outside the city limits. The cross was lighted about 10 o'clock, and many of an Inquiring turn of mind made a hasty trip to the scene of the burning cross, but the meeting, if there had been one,

had been adjourned, as the scene

was deserted.

MILWAUKEE, Wis., Sept. 10. The legislature of Wisconsin, by a vote of 58 to 19, recently killed the Peterson bill, memorializing Congress to make it treason for the Ku Klux Klan to refuse to submit its roster of membership at request of public officials.

WAPAKONETA, O., Sept. 8. A raid conducted at the Burnett House by police officers resulted in the confiscation of liquor which, according to sworn affidavits, was carried into the hotel by an actress, Clarie Byne. The girl was held on a charge of illegal possession of liquor, and fined $100 and costs in the court of the justice of the peace. Miss Byne, chorus girl with a musical comedy company showing here this week, when arrested entered a plea of guilty to the charge and was released upon payment of the fine.

In past years it has unfortunately been only too often the case that a prison sentence, even for a minor offense., has ruined a man's career to the extent that on gaining his freedom he has found all the doors shut to him which would lead to normal employment. He has thus found himself almost forced into a life of crime. Hence it is no surprise to learn of the organization of various societies, etc., in different parts of America having for their object the overcoming of this state of affairs. Such societies arrange to take care of prisoners on their being released

from jail and thus help to bridge over the gap which has ere this proved so impassable to many. It is part of the -work of these societies to connect a man with a job, in other words, at that time in his whole existence when such a thing seems most difficult to him. One such organization, called the Central Howard. Association, operates in a number of the middle western states, and has during the last year accomplished a remarkable

amount of good in this manner. It helps equally the man on parole and the discharged prisoner, and Mr. Lyon, the superintendent, recently told an interviewer that he had today no fewer than 150 men paroled to him from half a dozen or more institutions. He said also that his ob

servation had led him to favor strongly the parole system, as he had found that only ence in a while

The organization of these societies

marks a wonderful advance in the

world's thought. It is gradually be

ing recognized that in a great num

ber of cases so-called criminals are

victims of circumstances rather than

inherently depraved, and it is being discovered that the good in them can

be brought out if they are given a chance to prove themselves. The day is fast passing when a prison was looked upon as a house of punishment, In which the inmates were to be made to suffer to the limit, to be then turned loose upon the world to wreak unon it their vengeance for

what they have been made to endure. Of course there are still many bar barous prisons and inhuman meth

ods of punishment employed in them

but on the whole there can be seen

a gradual change for the better, with a resultine iiimrovement in the

morale of the prisoners themselves

When finally it is fully appreciated

that a man guilty of some crime is

just as much in need of help as the man on a bed of sickness, then the prisons will become what they should

be, reformatories in the true sense of the word. The Christian Science

U. S. S. VIRGINIA IS SUNK BY BOMBERS

Battleship New Jersey Is Also a Target for American Airplanes

NORFOLK, Va., Sept. 8. One bomb weighing 2,000 pounds dropped from an airplane 10,000 feet in the air sent the battleship Virginia to the bottom of the Atlantic ocean off

Cape Hatteras today. The battleship

New Jersey, also a target for aerial

bombers, was still afloat at last re

ports here but was so badly damaged she was expected to go down at any minute.

The Virginia was hit several times

and several bombs fell in the water on both sides of her, but it was one

lone bomb that practically split the

ship in half and she went down in

ten minutes. The old ship actually sank thirty-three minutes after the aerial bombers began their attack on

her.

Bomb Spells Doom

The bomb that spelled the doom

of the Virginia struck her after tur

ret, tore down her three smoke

stacks, demolished her fighting masts and ripped her deck almost

from stem to stern. The ship sank

so fast that other bombs dropped from the air and intended to burst on

her decks struck the water in foam

made by the vessel after she had

disappeared below the surface.

The quick sinking of the Virginia

partly upset the plans for a two

days' program of bomb dropping

from airplanes. It was planned to

keep the Virginia, and New Jersey

afloat for two days so aerial gunners

could have an opportunity to try their marksmanship.
