suit seeking to have the county clerk
and the county treasurer enjomea from tn any manner spreading their
property upon the tax rolls of Barton
county or from in any manner sees:ing to collect taxes, either directly or indirectly, or from selling their property for tares, was filed in the clerk of the district court's office re
cently by the nuns of the Third
Order of St. Dominic against C. F.
Tounkin, county clerk, and W. P. White, county treasurer. Simultane
ously a temporary restraining order granted by Judge H. A. Hall of the probate court restraining the two county officials from spreading the
properties of the plaintiff upon the tax rolls, together with a surety bond of $500, was filed in the clerk's office. The order was granted by Judge Hall because of the absence of Judge C. R. Douglas of St. John, of this judicial district, who is on his vacation.
.Allege Institution Is Charitable The nuns of the Third Order of St Dominic, who operate the Strose hospital here, allege that their institu
tion is a charitable one and should be exempt. The case will be tried at the November term of district court.
The hospital's taxes this year total
more than $2,000.
The case is looked upon as a test case for other Catholic hospitals of
the state.

sand members of the Ku Klux Klan
from the northern part of Ohio as
sembled on a recent evening in
twenty-acre field one mile west of Carey and sixteen miles east of this city and under an electrically lighted
fiery cross held a meeting which
rumor states was one of the most
enthusiastic gatherings witnessed in
Ohio since the organization of the
Klan in the state.
The speaker, the president of one
of Ohio's leading colleges, spoke for two hours to the great crowd and
held their interest at all times.

Down through, the annals of history we find despots, tyrants and
ecclesiastical bodies that have held
this truth from the simple miad of the faithful, but the co-worker of
Truth called Intelligence has in ; each case shed its light, and the people have found that they were being held in ignorance for the personal gain of the offenders, which in each case are always the small minority. It is then that independence is -asserted. Every war ever recorded in history can be traced to the activities of certain individuals and systems who
would grasp with greedy paws the earnings of the toiler. These para
sites, who have more of worldly goods than they could possibly use in a -lifetime, continue to gouge the
very life blood from all who can be
held in suppression.

When a nation has established her
independence she must forever guard
against the insidious workings of
ecclesiastical powers of foreign birth,
and in order to be more fully pre
pared to fight the enemy of liberty
one must seek knowledge of her past
performances.
The history of any . nation will do
as an example, so let us pick out one
at random, say France. They had a bloody revolution over there at one
time. Let us find out what it was
all about.
At the time immediately preced
ing the bloodiest period of the world's
history, there were in France 23,000
monks, 60,000 curates, 37,000 nuns,
2.500 monasteries, 1,500 convents and
60,000 churches.
One-fifth of all the land belonged
to the king, one-fifth to the noble
men, and one-fifth to the church.
This land was by far the richest land in France and the Abby St Germain
des Pres alone had 900,000 acres,
This three-fifths of the whole coun
try was, of course, non-taxable. It waa a happy state of affairs lor the
royalty and the clergy. But there were twenty-six millions of PEOPLE
struggling for a mere existence on
the barren two-fifths that remained,
The doctrines of paternalism in the
state were completely triumphan'
The theory, reduced to a formula
ran thus: It Is the duty of the state
to teach man what things to do. It 1b
the duty of the church to teach man
what things to believe. As for man, it is his duty to be governed. That is and waB the object of his creation. He must receive with unquestioned simplicity andobedience whatever is doled out to him by the priest, to whom his management, his interests, his destiny in this world are entrusted. All these maxims were adopted by the house of Bourbon, and the French people were asked to forever accept the condition of intellectual and bodily bondage." It is easy to see through the whole scheme. The royalty gives
a rich part of the country to the
church, which, in turn, holds the subjects in ignorance and supersti
tion in order that they will do the will of-both state and clergy. And thus the merry farce went on until the worm turned. Guillotines, blood, headless bodies, rivers pol
luted with flesh and bones brought
terror to the hearts of those who had
held the multitudes in slavery fr bo

from the world's greatest power to a mere hollow shell, this system that
caused Ireland to turn traitor in the world waT, this system, that placed
images of saints along the road to that living hell of yesterday called
Siberia, where one might flog to death a woman, kiss a Wooden toe and be immediately forgiven? -
The answer is easy. They are
throwing their forces into America. Their clergy must live in splendor. The countries they have ruined are
no good to them now. America is
rich. It is the land of promise. But
America is EDUCATED. It is hard
for them to work where people are educated, so the line of attack does not come by the building of prisons
to put people in that do not believe the way they do. They are too far outnumbered to try their wholesale
torture stunts, so there is only one way left from Rome comes the wild cry, "BREAK DOWN AMERICA'S
SYSTEM OF EDUCATION."
The American Spirit
But Rome, like monarchy, did not
reckon with the spirit of American
independence; the puppets of the
papal octopus tools of the dark age
witchery are now gnawing at our
public schools, but another mighty
blast from the bugle has been heard
This bugle blast has been sounded
by the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan
and independence now comes forth
as the white horse-of the Apocalypse,
nearmg a rider, "shrouded with
garment white as wool," which shall
overcome the beast of ignorance
oppression.

torney Arthur Fitzpatrick Tried to Incite Riot Against

In spite of attentats at intimida
tion by threats of violence and pub-
iisnea statements by one Arthur Fitzpatrick, a BartlesvHle attorney, that "no masked mob would be per-
muteo to carry the American flag down the street," the Ku Klux Klan paraded the streets of BarUesviile, guarded by 800 deputies sworn in
for the occasion. Five thousand peo
ple lined the streets as the Klans
men marched In orderly procession.
and no movement was made to pre
vent, nor was it hampered In any way, though it was confidently ex
pected by residents of Bartlesvtlle that there would be bloodshed, owing to the riot-inciting utterances of Fitzpatrick.

of opponents of the Klan, which was addressed by Fitzpatrick, who de
clared he would either Jerk the sag from its bearer or die in the attempt.
Ha advised the 2,000 persons in the
grand -stand to arm themselves and prevent the parade, assuring them thai they would be provided with special commissions, omitting, how
ever, to mention where the commisaions were to come from. Fttipat-
rick himself carries s special commission from Governor Walton.
Had Constitutional Bights Immediately after the speech of Fitzpatrick, Rev. Donald H. Lagrone addressed the crowd, statins that the Klan had a constitutional right to parade, and that the remarks of Fitzpatrick would not cause a change of plans. The legally constituted authorities in Bartlesvllle, the Bheriff and chief
of police had given permission for the parade, and it was due to them that the special guard of 300 policemen was Tarnished the paraders. It Is said that Fitzpatrick could not be found after the parade by reporters who wished for a statement from him as to his change of mind.

Higher Intelligence Unknown Being brought up under Catholic

men and women the first Ohio mem
ber of the Junior Knights of . the Ku
Klux Klan. Marietta has the great
honor of having instituted the first
Junior Klan organization in Amer
lea. The Juniors are traveling at

At 10:30 p. m. thefireworks were
set off and the novitiates, numbering
close to 500 were lined up. The robed Klansmen formed a beautiful living fiery cross, and were marched
through the cross four abreast, two
men and two women marching to
the strains of that inspiring Chris
tian hyma, "Onward, Christian Sol
diers. ' The naturalization ceremo
nies were conducted under the rays
of two large fiery crosses.
The Klan has about reached its
quota here in Washington county.
Its power is being felt, however, and
soon this county -win do a Deuer
place in which to live.

in this county. I am sure that th
interest of the Klansmen here will
be fostered by it. It will stimulate

Meetings are held almost every
evening in the rural districts of the county and hardly a night passes but what a fiery cross shows forth its
rays giving all a reminder that the Ku Klux Klan was here yesterday, here today and ' here forever.

BLYTHEVILLB, Ark., Sept. 10. Last Thursday night the local Klan held a big meeting and demonstra
tion five miles west ot here, which was 'attended by Klansmen from Leechville, who came on a special
train, also Klansmen trom south eastern Missouri and all ot Mississippi county.
They had a big barbecue Just be
fore the speaking began, which was enjoyed by ail present. After the speaking a large class was Initiated, followed by a parade, led by a large Aery cross on a truck, which passed through the principal streets. The Klan is real strong in and around Blytherille, and Is tolas mB.
