KLAN TARES OVER VALPO UNIVERSITY (Continued from Page 1)

course in pra-medical, pharmacy, law, mechanical engineering, civil

engineering, electrical engineering, science and arts, a normal course for

teachers, music, oratory, and in fact,

a complete course. As a chartered

university it will confer all degrees

and will conduct a summer term in all courses. This university will furnish everything that could be

desired In the way of education, location and enthusiasm.

In the midst of all these things,

sentiment and tradition will not be

lost sight of; old employes or the Institution who have become a part and parcel of the university will not be forgotten. These employes whose whole lives have virtually been

linked with the fortunes of the uni

versity and livedeep in the memories of bygone years at the institution, will not be summarily dismissed. Provision will be made to retain them or to retire them on pensions In a manner that will perpetuate them In the memories held

by the alumni. The old inill, rich -'to-historical lore, - will 'be repaired, maintained and operated merely as a matter of sentiment and tradition.

To Enlarge Campus Options have been secured on a traot of land which includes the Sager Lake, and which will be made a part of the campus. The lake is about one and one-half miles long and is fed by springs and Is full of fish.

Upon this tract of land, which contains approximately one hundred and sixty-five acres, is a virgin forest and rich woodlands. An enormous

gravel pit is also found there. Every

thing iss fitting to make a wonderful

bathing beach and it is planned to build cottages for parents of students at the university. The cleared

tracts will be converted into golf

links. . At this time a satisfactory adjust

ment of the lease to equip the laboratories has been agreed upon. Other matters are being rapidly ironed out

and plans are going forward nicely

Under the plans for financing the project, the total indebtedness of $350,000 will be taken over by the Klan and at least $500,000 will be

made available for the successful de velopment of the university. In ad

dition to this an additional $500,000 endowment fund will be established

and the full force of the National or

ganization of the Klan will be behind the project at all times. Remarkable Enthusiasm Displayed The idea of the Klan getting behind Valparaiso university has met with most remarkable enthusiasm from Klansmen in all parts of America. It is probable no announcement was ever received with such national

interest to both the Klan and the general publie; the announcement was of prime importance. The university, which held its

fiftieth commencement exercises on August 15, has graduated more than 350,000 students coming from all

parts of the world. More than 140,000 graduated alumnus hold degrees

At the present time every state in the Union is represented at the university. In the class just graduated were students from Bolivia, South

America, the Philippine Islands,

Egypt, Russia, Turkey, Poland, Ja

pan and China.

The college boasts an exceptionally fine band and a glee club that

ranks very high. The official publication, "The Torch,", is an ably edited sheet which makes its appear

ance each Wednesday.

The only activities in an athletic

way at thi3 time is the call for can

didates for the football team. The football schedule for the coming year

is one of the strongest that the uni

versity has had in years. Ten games

have beeu scheduled. The first practice-will be held on September 10 and the first game will be played on October 6 with Kalamazoo Normal

at Kalamazoo, Michigan.

With the return of Klan representatives to Valparaiso this week, it Is hoped that "matters will have been so handled that the actual consumma

In view of these facts, it can not

be but admitted that Colonel Sim

mons, while speaking, no doubt in all sincerity, is speaking, without an accurate knowledge of the condition

of the Klan, taken as a whole in the

United States and especially in what

are known as the Northern states.

misunderstanding that may have

of Police Reagan, a reputed Knight of Columbus, The protest meeting held here on the evening before the beginning of the trial of Dr. Lougher, and which was led by the best-known citizens in this city, and attended by approximately 3,000 persons, gives ample proof of how an indignant public feels in regard to the action taken by Chief of Police Reagan at the order of Mayor Bradley.

being one which will fill a long felt

city have long desired and prayed

port themselves, and this kindergarten department will in itself be

The Community House enterprise

Is chartered under the laws of the

state of Indiana, and will be con

ducted upon a strictly business-like

basis, and although it is not organ

ized for commercial profit, it will, when fully completed and equipped, be self-supporting, on revenue, derived from the very nominal charges which will be made for hotel accommodations to out-of-town guests In addition to the Community house itself, twenty-two acres of beautiful wooded land has been donated to the committee to be used as a summer camp In connection

with the Community House. Plans

are now under way for the erection

of an open-air hospital where hun

dreds of sick children may be cared

for. There will also be adequate provision made for the accommoda

tion of mothers who wish to be with

their children here in thiscamp.

case of Dr. Lougher.

That "General Outbreak"

Judge Bullock affirms this in his

declaration that he believes the po

lice were "right in stopping the

speaking and not waiting for a gen eral outbreak."

Outbreak by whom? Outbreaks by

those who have kept in power such

men as Chief of Police Beagan who,

instead of attempting to rid the city

of Lexington of negro dives and boot

leggers, spends his time in arresting free-born American citizens for exercising their rights as American cit

izens?

Does anybody believe that Chief

Reagan does not know of the places in Mill street where liquor can be

purchased at practically any hour of

the day or night? Possibly he

doesn't. Mill street is bad enough

but Water street is even worse. What

does Chief of Police Reagan believe certain people are doing who ride up

in big automobiles to certain places

in Water street. It is just possible that Chief Reagan will find out more

about these places- in the not dis

tant future.

Chief of Police Reagan is one of the

old members of an "under cover re

gime" that has governed the city of Lexington for more than forty years. Mayor Bradley, who is much interested in horses, is said to have given

the order that caused the arrest of

Dr. Lougher, but it is hard to make

hundreds of citizens of this city be

lieve that certain influences quietly

at work to keep the old run of things

originate the order. This, however, does not make Mayor Bradley one

whit less responsible for the act that brought disgrace to Lexington and which estopped a man exercising a right that the Constitution of the United States as well as the constitution of Kentucky gives him. Muncle Bootlegger Active
