Autoist Who Was Arrested by Klansman at Sebring Will Appeal to Higher Court
SEBRING, O., Aug. 11 Bitterness
at the trial of Dean Huseroft, charged with recklessly driving his automobile during a Klan ceremony
here last Saturday, was so great that Sheriff Paul Lyden ot Mahoning county Btatloned six deputies in the court of Mayor Harold Mushrush to maintain order Friday night. A fine of $25 and costs was as
sessed. Attorney J. W. Powers, Yonngstown, counsel for the defendant, declared the case would bd car
ried to the common pleas court on appeal.
Huseroft was arrested by John Arnold, said to have been clad in a Klansman's regalia, who was sworn in as a special police officer for the evening's celebration. Witnesses, friends of Huseroft's, declared that he was not driving fast or recklessly. Throughout the trial efforts to inject the religious faith of Huseroft were made bf his lawyer.
After hearing the testimony,
Mayor Mushrush assessed tie fine, declaring he regretted that a heavier penalty could not be assessed. In
summing up he pointed out that the
religious faith of neither of the par
ties involved had any weight with
him in making his decision.

COLUMBUS, O., Aug. 14. News
which will be received with elation' throughout Buckeye Klandom, Is that all Ohio Klans will receive their charters in December. Many local
organizations have already reached
their set quotas. The news will
spur others on to get their member
ships up to the set number before
that time so they can benefit by the order. The official announcement to this effect, which was issued here today by the state office of the Ku Klux Klan, reads in full as follows: Text of Order "Whereas, in the course of the de
velopment of patriotism in the state
of Ohio and in response to that emulated spirit of Christianity which hah
been in the life of every Klansman
and the development of the great
spirit of the craft in the trying days
surrounding our fight from the be
ginning down to the present time;
because of our expansion from a
mere handful of men into the gigantic army of Christian soldiers that
are being assembled by the thou
sands in the great state of Ohio from day to day, the time has come to announce to the state that all organizations will be chartered on December
20, except those bodies who have set
a charter quota and have not attained it.
"Let us make this one of the great
est days in the history of the state ot
Ohio, when all good citizens will kneel in common accord and give thanks to Almighty God for the wonderful achievement and blessing which has been bestowed on this generation arid the benefit -that will be passed to posterity. God in his wonderful wisdom and generous mercy has united us and we have
built better than we dreamed, until
today there is not a nook or corner in the state where the fiery cross
has not illuminated the heavens and the flag blazed the way for patriots
to a greater future hope. "May the same divine wisdom con
tinue to guide us and make us ap
proach with great humility our sol
emn responsibility as citizens, as pa
triots and as Christian soldiers, so
that no one might shirk his duty be
tween now and that momentous hour on December 20 at midnight, when
the last solemn word shall have been
said and our spirit fixed in the de
lectable bounds ot the Invisible Em
pire in a stamp of glory and gold
that-swill aark as-sublime this great
est of all events of the twentieth century. Calls for Enthusiasm "See that a burning fire of enthusiasm throbs in the breast of every member of your organization, so that he will awaken to the responsibility to do by his fellow man as it has
been done by him, so that the closing hour of the final day every available son of a white man's country,
under a white man's flag will be car
rying the glorious light in answering
the modern clarion call.
"Remember that an enthusiasm,
single-handed, will 'remove moun
tainous barriers, where an army ot workers without enthusiasm will not
excite a tremor of interest ; and then
remember, that when the fire of en
thusiasm is kindled in the heart? of
men, they will rise to the occasion as
only true sons of America can."

(By Staff Correspondent) COLUMBUS, O., Aug. 13. Espe cially commendable is the announce
ment made by Director of Education
Vernon M. Riegel, that courses of study especially designed to Instill
patriotism and lovcf lor country in school children, will soon be put into
effect in Ohio public schools.
It is not enough that the school
child should gain an idea of the
greatness of his native land from ordinary courses of study such as historyand civics, it is pointed out,
There must be an organized effort to plant the ideals of the United States
so deeply into .the heart of every stu
dent that they can not be forgotten,
The deplorable attitude towards
laws and their enforcement which is more or less prevalent today, would not exist to such a widespread extent
if proper training along patriotic
lines were given. To Examine Histories
The first step in bringing into ef
fect this program will be a thorough
Investigation' of all American his
tories now in use in Ohio's pnblic
schools. In this work Director Rie
gel has enlisted the aid of six patriotic societies. They are the Daugh
ters of the American Revolution, G.
A. R., Spanish-American war Veter
ans, American Legion, Ohio Society,
Sons of the American Revolution.
Ohio Federation of Women's Clubs
and the Ohio League of Women Vot
ers.
A letter has been sent to the heads
of each of these organizations, out
lining Mr. Riegel a plan of action and
asking for whole-hearted support
The keynote of his letter is that it is time steps in this direction were
taken to accomplish definite results
At the same time that he has opened his campaign to build up patriotism, Director Riegel has announced his plans for .warring on illiteracy in Ohio so that by 1930 there will not be a person within the borders of the Buckeye state who can not read and write. The 1920 census showed that there were 131,000 illiterates in Ohio. Approximately two-thirds of them are foreign-born. Thus the best line ot attack at the source of this evil is through Americanization work and night schools.
Work Is" Continued This work was previously handled
by the Americanization department.
At the last session of the general
assembly, however, funds to continue the work were not appropriated and
it was regrettably discontinued. In
part, however, it is being continued
by the state department of educa tion. '
Every county superintendent of
education has been asked by M. W. Simpson, who is in charge of- adult education in Ohio, to obtain the names of every illiterate within his
territory. Thus, educators can aim at the source of the evil and rapidly
eliminate it.
LANCASTER, Ky.. Aug. .13. On last Thursday night both, the Ku Klux
Klan and the women's Organisation held meetings in commemoration ot
the late President Harding. At the conclusion of a short address by a local minister the entire assemblage knelt in silent prayer.
SPEAKER GETS APPLAUSE
(By Staff Correspondent) COLUMBUS, O., Aug. 13. "In
again, out again, going again," is the
policy pursued by operators of parl-
mutuel machines at Keuian Park race track. Grove City, southwest of
here, where the Grand Circuit run
ning races have been in full swing
for the past week.
Last Monday secret service men
for the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan
swore out seventy warrants and an
equal number of affidavits- for the op
erators of the machines and paying
booths at the Grove City track. A
warrant for the arrest of H. D. Shep-
ard, manager of the Capitol City Rac
ing Association, charging him with
permitting gambling on premises un
der his control and a search war
rant for the seizure of all parapher
nalia, were issued. The warrants
were "John Doe" warrants.
Justice of the Peace Irvin Demor-
est, of Jackson township. Issued the
papers. Deputy sheriffs and spe
cially deputized men who were to assist in the arrests gathered in the basement of the Methodist church at
Grove City.

Klan Aids Aged Negro to Recover Eyesight FRANKFORT, Ohio, August 13, Elijah Lockler, aged 73, negro, can once again see the light of day. A
successful operation was performed to remove cataracts from his eyes.:
A month ago the old gentleman was at a loss as to how to finance the ex
pensive undertaking. Hearing -of his need a group of Klansmen one day visited his home and left a substantial donation .with a letter directing that the money be used, to perform the operation. This act of kindness has done much in this vicinity to dispel a deal of wild notions as to the attitude ot the Knights ot the -Ku Klux Klan toward the colored race.

CANDIDATES INITIATED
WILMINGTON, Del., Aug. 13. A class of five hundred candidates
were initiated at the top of Penny
Hill near this city on last Wednes
day night, as two giant fiery crosses
blazed from the hilltop. The meet
ing was one of the largest held near
this place for several weeks. A na
tional officer of the Ku Klux Klan
delivered an address immediately preceding the initiation.
MIDNIGHT SUPPEK
Gibsland Klan Number 59, Realm
of Louisiana, a few days ago con
ducted a most impressive public
naturalization ceremony. Sixty-six aliens were naturalized and after an address on the. patriotic principles
of the Klan, the" visiting Klansmen were entertained at a midnight
supper.
50,000 SPECTATORS
Following the law. Squire Demorest called Sheriff Frank Holycross of Franklin county, saying that he did not have enough men to serve the warrants and asked for help. The sheriff came. However, he refused
to serve the "John Doe" warrants, saying that the supreme court ruling required a description of the party to be arrested.
Mr. Shepard was placed under ar
rest. In his arraignment before Jus
tice Demorest, it was noted that the warrant for his arrest wasn't signed
and the case was forthwith dis I missed.
However, gambling at the track on
Monday, after the fifth race, stopped, Nevertheless, it was resumed the fol
lowing day. Thursday several oper
ators were arrested by the sheriff,
charged with operating the game and
selling tickets. They will have their I trials on August 28. j
The racing at Beulah Park contin
ues for another week. What action will be taken by the Klan to stop it
has not yet been decided upon. It
is agreed that arresting does no good,
for the sheriff no sooner makes an arrest, than the accused get out on bond and resume their operations.
Fifteen Machines Fifteen pari-mutuel machines and
twenty-two paying booths are open under the grandstand. Everyone was
gambling. In the crowd were seen
many of the "best known" police
court characters and bootleggers of.
recent days. The extent of the evil.
however, extends to some so-called
decent business men of Columbus.
who have been spending most of
their time at the rail since the races
opened.
Injunction proceedings may be sought' this week,, it was indicated
today. It is believed that such an-
appllcation would be granted, as fav
orable action was received on an In
junction against the Grand Circuit
meeting at the Columbus Driving Park two weeks ago.
A 100 Case That Will Give 100 Service to Your Organization
This strong, light-weight steel case is made especially for your robes. It has been endorsed by the "Old Man" as a good standard case for the organization to use. v Each Klansman's number is stenciled on the end of the case so that they can be filed on shelves at headquarters by robe custodian. This not only keeps the robes clean and covered, but makes for greater convenience when going out on a demonstration. FIELDMEN-Write For Our Proposition Address National Distributing Co.
