Politicians Losing Power to Deceive A Summing Up of the Political Situation

With Indiana being swept

from border line to border line with the militancy of the

Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, and with the people on every hand looking askance and wondering why, probably no better

answer could be obtained or given than the following article by Gilbert O. Nations, editor of "The Protestant." A national survey of the Klan in the United States, and its achievements, as well as an entirely familiar vision of its program, inspired this article by Mr. Nations. a

sweeping the northland, this article

comes with unerring certainty and great timeliness. Mr. Nations says: "The political outlook is chaotic. Unrest grows constantly more ominous. The controlled press and poli

ticians are losing their power to de

ceive. The people are disgusted to exas

peration with hollow shams. They

have lost interest in parties without character, courage or program

Politics must be born again. The

people require justice instead of ex

pediency. They scorn administra

tions controlled by predatory inter

ests. National and international prob

lems become daily more crucial and imminent. Their solution can not he

delayed. They challenge the highest

type of patriotism and statecraft. The Half Dozen Manipulators

The half dozen manipulators that

decided overnight to nominate Mr

Harding at Chicago cared nothin

for the people except to get their votes. They sought only to control the next administration and'dispense

its patronage.

That incentive secured Cardinal

Gibbons to offer the convention in vocation. His prayer was . not ex

pected to reach beyond the Roman

Catholic voters.

Wall Street and the Roman hier

archy were in control. The result

was a mediocre ticket and a mean

ingless platform. Popular revulsion

against the Tumultys and Ryans and

Walshes and Bensons and Drum

monds of the Wilson administration

elected the Republican ticket.

That ticket had no inherent

strength or merit. It was rooted in

privilege and reaction and thread

bare traditions. It was not designed

to meet the vast problems arising out

of the World War and our new in

dustrial and economic conditions Tammany Hall Again

The Democratic ticket nominated

at San Francisco was no better. It

was the creature of Tammany Hall

It was contrived by delegation

chosen by the money trust and the Roman hierarchy in the great cities.

Similar delegations are now being secretly chosen by the same process in both political parties. The voice of the people is totally excluded from the covert and selfish manipulation. The delegation from each great city

will be composed of pliant nondescripts accompanied by like characters from rural portions of the state and headed by -cunning acd resourceful politicians seasoned in trickery and intrigue. But it becomes increasingly diffi

cult to beguile all the people. They are tired of the crushing taxation saddled on them by wanton public extravagance. They are tired of being plundered by railroads for the benefit of predatory combinations holding bonds and watered stock. -They are tired of extortion by gi

gantic financial combinations in ut

ter disregard of both ethics and law

They are tired of buying necessaries at prices so out of proportion to

those realized by the producers.

They are tired of seeing papalized

state governments and legislatures driven by politicians and criminals

in Roman Catholic cities to repudiate the Constitution of the United States. They are tired of seeing enforce

ment of the eighteenth amendment

committed to inadequate and un

friendly hands as a pawn of cunning

ana elusive politicians. Tired of Enslaved Press

They are tired of a press abjectly enslaved to alien and predatory

power. They are tired of seeing good

citizens maligned by a shameless

press and shadowed by cringing public authorities for membership in or

ganizations composed exclusively-of

native-born Protestant citizens.

They are tired of seeing all citi

zens branded as radicals who con

demn shady political bargaining and

public injustice and wrong. They are tired of a hundred thrones in our cities enforcing the canon law of Rome on American citizens. They are tired of mouthing about education by propagandists of the Church of Rome that has educated Latin America till illiteracy there is virtually universal. They are tired of having public schools in the hands of Roman Catholic teachers and boards of education to whom the schools are outlawed by statutes of the Pontifical throne.

They are tired of having school legislation pigeonholed for years in Congress at the behest of the Roman

hierarchy as the enemy of public education. They are tired of tax

burdens greatly augmented that billions of wealth vested in a hundred

enthroned prelates of Rome may be

exempt. They are tired of Knights

or Columbus in control of tbe gov

ernment secret service. They are tired of Papal-Irish as

saults on European and American

history. They are tired of the big

otry and 'criminal overbearing of the event trained Roman Catholic mobs formed j completed.

to break up orderly Protestant meetings and terrorize law abiding communities., - Secret Political Bargaining They are tired of seeing venal hands of the Roman hierarchy thrust into public treasuries to the shoul

ders. They are desperately tired of

the vasLpolitical organization formed

witn headquarters In the national capital to place five or six millions

of Roman Catholic votes in the hands

of the enthroned hierarchy for use

in secret political bargaining.

Popular unrest is reflected in grow

ing courage and militancy of the religious and fraternal press. It is reflected in returns of recent elections.

It is reflected in progressive in

surgency threatening total disintegration of both old political parties.

it is renected in the widening popular demand for a progressive party responsive to the rights and aspirations of the people.

It is demonstrated by the increas

ing number of distinguished scholars

and patriots and statesmen who read

mis magazine and nraise its unan

swerable message. It appears from

the great number and tremendous

aggregate circulation of periodicals devoted exclusively to the patriotic

cause.

Many Hoosiers to Attend

Class of 2,000 Will Be Initiated as Part of Program

A Brutal Fury It is strikingly shown by the phe

nomenal growth of the Ku Klux Klan

and similar organizations. Brutal fury of the Roman hierarchy, cringing politicians and controlled press

has clothed such organizations with martyrdom in the popular mind and

nas tnus hastened their marvelous spread Into every part of the country.

Present membership of the Klan is

not known to the .public. But a recent press report gave the number as

tour hundred thousand in one state of the middle west Delegates to the

recent Catholic Press Association at Indianapolis were amazed at the visible strength and boldness of the or

ganization in that capital.

Two years ago when the Invisible

Empire was in swaddling clothes the

controlled daily press in one sudden impulse devoted many thousands of

front-page columns to furious denunciation syndicated from the throne city of the richest and most populous Roman see in the world. In consequence the organization

instantly sprang into powerful and triumphant activity from coast to coast- Shocking mendacity of the charges so widely exploited opened the heart of the nation. Ministers and lawyers and merchants and

bankers and statesmen rushed Into its membership. Many great northern cities have witnessed meetings attended by Incredible numbers at which thousands of new members were initiated in one day. Men that hesitated and stood aloof till th righteousness of the Klan was demonstrated by the methods of its enemies now regard it with enthusiasm. Politicians Tremble

It has flourished mightily in soil fertilized by the patriotic press.

Craven politicians tremble at Its phe

nomenal growth. It is the one tangi

ble and organized- force able to cope with the wealth and power of Rome in the ensuing political campaign.

Its one besetting handicap is lack

of experience and trained leadership.

it is confidently hoped that unselfish wisdom of its official leaders will be able to co-ordinate every district and

local unit of the new and powerful body and direct its peerless manhood

to the salvation of our country, the blessing of humanity and the glory of God.

To that end the counsel1 of honest

and patriotic men with no personal ambitions but with large experience and superior wisdom in great politi

cal movements should be sought and welcomed.

Deeply entrenched in both existing

political parties, the hierarchy of Rome seeks to round up in advance

any new political movement that popular sentiment may call into being. Firm bonds of fellowship have already been established with all

men now deemed possible leaders of such a movement. Complete Dominance Election to the presidency of any one of the half dozen politicians now in the public mind as progressive leaders would mean complete papal dominance in the White House and on Capitol Hill. It would make additions to papal strength in the federal judiciary that could not be removed in twenty years. It must not be.

Membership of patriotic organiza

tions must be so augmented before

me primaries and nominating con

ventions that politicians will not dare ignore their wishes and betray the country. The most powerful sordid

inducements will be in reach of pa

triotic leaders themselves. May Di

vine Providence sustain their in

tegrity and direct their minds and hearts. "

Human destiny hangs on our elections next year. The Revolutionary War brought forth its Washington. The Civil War gave us Lincoln. May the present crisis be favored with leadership of equal genius, integrity and worth."

EAST ST. LOUIS-, 111., Aug. 14.

A gigantic celebration, all-day picnic and barbecue will be held here on

Labor day by the Knights of the Ku

Klux Klan at historic Monks Mound, and from all reports at present the

attendance will break all records.

Speakers of national reputation will explain the principles of the

Klan, and others will deliver stirring

addresses on patriotism and Americanism. These addresses will be de

llvered to the public in general in order that all might learn of the greatest organization the country

nas ever known.

Among the many features of the

day s program will be a series of

athletic events, and there will be

plenty of music through the day. To Initiate Big Class

In the evening a mammoth class

of 2,000 candidates will be natur

alized in the initiation ceremonies of the Invisible Empire beneath the

flaring lights of huge fiery crosses

The Women's Organization will also

be well represented and will admin

ister the oath of Americanism to

large number of candidates for their

order.

tpnowing the initiation ceremo

nies will be a sensational display of

Klan fireworks.

It is understood that a large number of Klansmen from Indiana will

attend the meeting.
