THE FIERY CROSS
Opposition to Klandom Useless in Fort Smith
Interest in Patriotism Shown at Brownsville
FORT SMITH, Kas., Aug. 7. Letters of congratulation were sent from all county officials to Mayorelect David L. Ford, alleged Ku Klux Klan candidate who was elected here recently. The ammunition used in an attack against him acted as a boomerang to the opposition, that waged a bitter but unsuccessful battle, when after passing out large page circulars attacking the Ku Klux Klan the day before' election, they were stingingly defeated by the overwhelming vote of 1,824 to 524.
BROWNSVILLE, HI. Aug. 7. About 2,000 persons gathered one evening last week to hear an address on the Ku Klux Klan. The Klan Is growing in favor here each day and the fact that the population of the town is only 500, gives an idea of the interest that is being shown throughout the community.
Dekalb county, Ala., Masons will hold their fifty-fourth semi-annual conference at Colllnsville, August 910. Representatives of fifteen lodges will be present.

Limber Lunged Lew is a member, and which has become so notorious for its brick-heaving squads that it has slunk into other cities under another name, and which has already made way for getting into action under a new guise in Indianapolis when it began to be deserted by most ot those who still possess the desire to be known as reputable citi
zens. Men Thrown In Jail However, although they resign, it is understood they are still free from
the despotic actions of the police de
partment, whereby men are thrown
into Jail on charges for which they are afterward released, and kept there without the use of the tele
phone or forced to give "Hed," or
some other hanger-on, $25 to pro
cure a bond so that they might be released. In one instance, J. B. Sconce, 2101
Wendell avenue, was arrested near Illinois and Twenty-seventh street by Sergeant Sheenan and Plain
Clothesmen Rpminger and Dugan as he was returning from the theater, and then told by the turnkey that he
"was going to stay in until they wanted to let him out" He was refused the use of the telephone and
did not get it until the next day. At the trial he was released because
there was no charge to place against
him.
- Call the Scottish Rite! Hardly!
And neither would the police call the Lincoln hotel for F. L. Haines, local manager of the Avery company, after
they had ridden him to the police
station in the patrol wagon after-hav
ing arrested him at midnight for
driving thirty miles an hour. How
ever, Mr. Haines did succeed after some time in securing his liberty by
paying; a man called "Red" $25 to
"go his bond."
However, these arrests throw no
fear into Czar Rikhoff, who, in dis
regarding trade signals at Alabama
and Washington streets, and swing
ing into Washington street with the
signal against him, avoided running clown a man living in Temple ave
nue, tnrougn tne agmty or tne man living in Temple avenue and through no effort by the Czar, who was pos
sibly nursing bruised knuckles at the time after pounding them on his desk. It is possible, though, that the
Czar was worrying over the fact that John F. Kortpeter, an aged standkeeper on the market had been thrown into jail at three o'clock in the afternoon and had been given no supper because he "made the police mad." Man Bent With Age The arrest of the old man, who is bent with age, as a part of the "market raid" upholds the record for bravery, established when Mike
Glenn so valiantly went forth to battle the Fiery Cross newsboys with
his "Poison Squad," fed on prejudice, hate and bunk, by its affiliated organization, the un-American Unity League. Due to--the fact that the
trials of the newsboys have not yet been held, Czar Rikhoff, no doubt,
feel3 that he holds a strategic position. By rescinding an order which he did not give, refusing to resign when asked to do so by Limber Lunged Lew, and refusing to incriminate himself by learning the number of the engine in the Ford sedan which Inspector John Mullin drives, he has without equivocation established his generalship. Already the Czar is overcoming the handicap of losing fifteen Protestants, twelve of whom were Masons, from his detective force when he, and his jewels, reduced them because they were Protestants and Ma
sons. He now has a new sergeant in
the person of former traffic officer Kennedy, negro, whom he has raised
in rank during the past week.
Even Sherlock Pope, who introduces the damning evidence of a
picture of the golf links of the presi
dent of the Indianapolis Water Company as part of Limber Lunged
Lew's attempt to turn the water work3 over to Bill Armitage, is not
to compare with Czar Rikhoff, al
leged chief of police of the Indianap
olis police department, auxiliary to
the un-American Unity League Czar About to Abdicate
However, Czar Rikhoff is about to
abdicate; possibly not willingly, but In a way much like the kaiser, whose idea of running a police department
as an auxiliary would be much the same as that of Czar Rikhoff, whose present war on Protestants would
seem to have just about reached the limit. It is thought possible, though, that before abdicating he may investigate certain alleged craps games in Virginia avenue in which an amount of
money changes hands that permits
winners to purchase high priced au
tomobiles from their winnings. Also games of such importance that rival
'gangs" hold up the games at the
point of guns. The police on this beat may be new men, and for that
reason have never been able to learn anything about these games which are alleged to flourish so freely.
In the meantime Mike Glenn can
confer with Joe Roach and "appeal for more traffic men."

The cynic, the scoffer, call these hollow phrases'. But they are not. They stand for just what they say. The truth of this is coming more and more to be realized by all thinking people. "Our flag Is In danger, enemies from abroad and at home seek to overturn our traditions, uproot our laws and make a mockery of the government." It is the Klan which more than any other group of citizens is guarding against this condition, he said. The lecturer stated that within five
years' time the state of Ohio would have a school law similar to the one passed in Oregon last year, making the public school the one and only school in the state. This assertion was heartily received by all. Many speakers, some from Lima and others of nation-wide repute, dwelt in detail upon various phases of Klan purposes. The history of the organization, how it started, when sixteen men on Stone Mountain, Georgia, took an oath to stand
by one school, one law for all, one flag and one country, was told by a

Parade of 6,000
Klan officials In charge of parade
arrangements through downtown
streets declared Saturday night that
&,000 men and women in full re
galia were in the line of march. The procession started at 7:30
o'clock from the park.
Officials on horseback led the line. They were followed by a uniformed
band, and then a delegation of
women of the Ladies of the Ku Klux
Klan followed. Many cities were represented in the line by large del
egations marching together. Mun-
cie, Ind., Springfield, Toledo, Fos
toria, Spencerville, Delphos and Auglaize county, were thus represented, while others marched together without identification. Red and white crosses were carried throughout the column. Five bands and a drum corps were scattered
through the line. The women carried a large silk American flag at half mast. All colors carried were either dropped in memory of the president or draped in black. On the left arm of everyone in the parade, a black bow was worn.
The line led into the public square where the throng formed into one solid mass, kneeled and bowed their
heads for one moment in silent
prayer for the departed chief executive of the nation, while the bands in subdued tones softly played, "America." Then at a command the
throng arose, the bands struck up martial airs, the lines formed again and returned to the park. Tho thousands of spectators who had watched, the parade crowded the driving park to witness the naturalization ceremonies which " followed. Under the light of seven fiery
crosses, some of them burning and others electrically illuminated, a class of candidates, said officially to number 3,700 men, wre taken into the Invisible Empire. Following the oath, the outer guard lines were
withdrawn and the public was permitted to gather closer around the
Tramp Printer Helped j Harding Meet Pay Rollj CLINTON, 111., Aug. 7. Mike Bachman, Warren G. Harding's first printer in Marion, assisted the future President through the reorganization of a defunct newspaper. It was
not always easy for the editor to arrange the weekly pay day. Not only did Mike allow his time to accumu
late, but on more than one occasion loaned a few dollars to assist the boss In paying off the help.
But the road called Mike and.
though he worked at various times
on the Star, he spent his years working and traveling. When Mr. Hard
ing wa3 elected President, Mike
wrote that he was ready to accept a position in the new cabinet and re
ceived a letter in reply stating that the old printer would be given a governmental position if he desired
it. But Mike had spent too many years on the road to be satisfied in one place. His whereabouts are now unknown.

SANDWICH. I1L, Aug. 7. A huge revolving electric cross was the cause of much interest here as it threw its light over a large number of candidates for membership in the order of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, when the oath of Americanism was administered. An attentive audience listened to an address on the principles of the Klan by a wellknown speaker.
UNIQUE OCCASION The grand master of Masons of Minnesota, Joseph M. McConnelL was the presiding official at a unique occasion when last week he laid the corner stones of the new city hall, community recreational building, and Masonic temple at Virginia, Minn. Masonic bodies from Duluth, Two Harbors, Cloquett and Superior attended the ceremonies in full form.
