PITTSBURG, Pa., Aug. 4. Five
thousand candidates were initiated into the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan here on Monday night following a monster parade in Wilkinsburg In
which more than five thousand Klansmen in full regalia took part. A cross more than fifty feet high, and the tallest cross to be burned in this part of Pennsylranla, was lighted immediately before the beginning of the ceremonial. The initiation was held in a big
tract of land near Wilkinsburg, where 25,000 Klansmen, nearly all of whom were in the regalia of the order, swarmed over the hills around the spot where the candidates were taking the oath. The Klansmen came from many of the surrounding towns to take part In the ceremonial
and parade. Owing to the vast num
ber of candidates, the class was split
into several groups, and the lnltia
tions continued until long after mid
night.
Special Trains Are Run
The parade which preceded the
ceremonial was more than an hour
in passing a given point and was led by mounted Klansmen. Eight bands had a part in the long procession
which swung through Lincoln high
way, Pennsylvania and Koss avenues
It is estimated that at least twenty-
five thousand persons, in addition to that number of Klansmen, journeyed
to Wilkinsburg to witness the parade
Special trains a-nd. thousands of automobiles carried visitors into Pitts
burg bound for Wilkinsburg through
out the afternoon.
The demonstration and initiation was one of the largest, if not the
largest ever held In this part of
Pennsylvania, and proves the asser
tioir by Klansmen that their mem
bership In this state has long ago
passed the 100,000 mark.

WANTS THIRD TERM
NEW PHILADELPHIA. O., Aug. 6
Mayor Eli N. Fair, Republican,
seeking a third term as the chief
executive of Governor A. V. Dona
hey's home city. Fearing that the
"calling down" he received from the governor on May 17 may work to his discredit, Republicans have also placed former State Senator Oliver
J. DeMuth on the list.
However, when Fair was given
thirty days by bis fellow townsman in the state house to clean up the
community, he obtained the resigna
tion of one policeman and dismissed
another. Things have gone better
since.

(By Staff Correspondent) COLUMBUS, 0- Aug. 4. The
seven alleged gamblers arrested last Friday at the Columbus Driving Park oh charges of operating parimutuel machines, were arrested on
similar but separate charges Thursday afternoon by Detectives Clarence
Martin and William England of the city police force as they were1 leaving the court of Justice A. C. Kuhn, Bexley, where they had obtained continuance of their cases until Oc
tober 1.
These men were originally ar
rested on affidavits sworn out by
secret service operatives of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. The affidavits could not be obtained from Justice Kuhn, in whose township the
betting and gambling is said to have taken place, until notice was served
on him by a taxpayer. . Even then he refused to serve the warrants which were handled by Sheriff Frank
Holycross.
Trial August 28 Friday morning the men were ar
raigned before Judge Seidel in municipal court. They all pleaded not
guilty and will be tried August 28.
It is understood from Attorney Horace S. Kerr and Attorney Connors, representing the defense, that
technicality will be raised to ob
tain their dismissal. It is said that
the men are twice in jeopardy. How
ever, In the cases tried in squire's
court the alleged crime was com
mitted on July 26, while those
brought into police court alleged the
committing of a misdemeanor on
July 25.
Counsel for the defense also claims
that the men were arrested on the premises , of Justice Kuhn, -which is virtually In the court and therefore
can not be held legally. However,"
they were not taken into custody by
the plainclothes men until they had
stepped onto the sidewalk. Each of them is out under $100 bond pending trial. They ar: Brad Murphy, Frank Wolfe, John Watkins, Lawrence Witticare and Cliff Wyatt of Columbus, and Richard Jones of
Pittsburgh. Three times, over the objection of Attorney Nathaniel P. Willis, who represents the Knights of the Ku
Klux Klan and the state, in the case before the justice, different dates were set for the trial of the men. Willis would agree to none of the dates. However, the court arranged with counsel for the defense to hear the cases at 8 o'clock in the evening on October 1. Attorney Willis read into the rec
ord his objection to this procedure, but at the request of Attorney Kerr it was ordered eliminated by. the
court.

(By Staff Correspondent) AKRON, O., Aug. 6. The shakeup In the city police department has come. It became effective Saturday at the Instigation of Safety Director Lloyd Carter who issued orders that
there shall be more policemen on the streets and fewer in headquarters; that Akron policemen shall not
lounge with friends while on beat duty, but keep moving.
Under the new system which is the
result of a month's study by Director Carter since he succeeded Director Warren Selby, all captains will
make tours of Inspection twice every day and every night.
It Is this feature of the shift which
has attracted the most favorable comment from law-abiding citizens
of the Rubber City. It is this method which will make It impossible for one captain to have things his own way, a condition which was brought out here two weeks ago- when deputy sheriffs raided a disorderly house. The owner told them that the captain of the vice squad had been "fixing things" for her and had
given orders to close every night at
9 o clock. Little Enforcement
While Akron has a small force for a city of its proportions, there has been a laxity of law enforcement in many branches of the service. The
many changes in patrolmen to dis
trict duty, the shifting of two head
quarters sergeants to the street and the edict that "traffic must no longer
be directed from the curb," will improve conditions, it is believed.
However, it remained for the safety director to take action. When
testimony was brought out in police court here that Captain McGuire had
ordered a disorderly house closed at
a certain hour each night, but re
trained from interfering with its
business previous to that time. Chief
of Police John Durkin was in the
room. The chief is said to have failed to take official notice of the
statements made.
Friday, Safety Director Carter In
formed the chief that the changes
would be effective Saturday morn
ing.

the activities of the Junior Klansmen. The publication will be in the form of a magazine rather than that of a newspaper such as The Fiery
Cross. It will be edited by Junior
Klansmen and -Milton Elrod, editor-

The success of the Junior Klan has

that are working for the erection of a Protestant community house in that locality. Echo Rings Sincere Personally, we can echo with a certain large measure of sincerity the words of our own dear Hoosier poet, who loved the little ones for whom this community house is to be established : "When God sends rain then rain's my choice." Naturally, no open-air lawn fete can progress successfully in a down
pour of rain. Nevertheless, the Saturday night affair could not be called
a failure. During the few hours it
was in progress several thousand
dollars were added to the fund, and in response to thousands of requests
from the Out-of-town guests who were
disappointed, a glorified, magnified, three-day lawn fete has been planned for August 23, 24 and 25. This will
be called the Liberty Hall Rally.
This announcement seems to indicate
that members of a certain congrega

additional hours on their knees
