LITTLE CHANCE FOR AN EXTRA SESSION
No Intention at This Time of Calling Congress Together, Says Washington Report
r
WASHINGTON, Aug. 7. President Coolidge apparently has no present Intention of calling an extra "session of the congress, but those who called on him today received the Impression that he had not made a final decision. The possibility of an extra session
was discussed by the president with Samuel Oompers, , president, and
Frank Morrison, secretary of the American Federation of Lapor.. Mr.
Oompers Bald the president appeared to have no Intention now of calling the congress together ahead of time, but waa reserving any definite de
cision. To Submit Policies. The subject waa brought up by Mr. Oompers because of bis desire to submit legislative proposals on behalf of organized labor. He made an engagement to see President Coolidge again early next month to submit labor policies which are to be discussed at a meeting this month of the federation's executive council. The labor leaders spent more than a half hour with the president in a discussion of industrial matters. The situation in the coal industry was taken up, but without mention of any threatened strike.

WELLSTON, O., Aug. 7. The largest crowd ever seen in or about Wellston eathered at tha Jackson
county fair grounds Prfday, July 27, to see the oeremonies performed that
initiated more than six hundred can
didates into the mysteries of the great American order, Knights of the Ku Klux Klah. The ceremonies took place Inside of the big race track, with several hundred robed guards spread around the track to see that no outsider could gain admittance.
The Dayton Ku Klux band furnished
the music for the parade and circled the tig field playing "Onward, Chris
tian Soldiers, with a crowd of over 40,000 persona looking on. The
skies were a solid mass of flames all
through the ceremonies, with the
most beautiful fireworks that were ever seen in this part of the state. The ladies came in for a large share of the honor, there being soma four or five hundred Initiated at the same time at another location.
Thousands of Automobiles
Thousands of automobiles were
parked in and around the fair
grounds. . It was estimated that at least fifteen thousand automobiles
were parked in and around the
grounds Klansmen from several
states, including parties of Klansmen
from Indiana and Illinois. One"
Klansman made himself known from
Spokane, Wash. Kentucky, West
Virginia and Michigan were well rep resented.
No disturbances of any kind or any bad language was heard at any time through the day or night. Not a-vulgar word was heard spoken at any time, and all the people were well pleased, and report that they
had never seen anything like it be
fore. Jackson county is now boasting of their membership although lots of opposition. This county now
has something like two thousand members. .L. M. MASON.

WASHINGTON, D. C, Aug. 4. The drop of 6.0 cents per bushel In the price of wheat has meant that the farmers of the country have lost the ability to pay debts to the extent of $5,000,000,000, according to Gray Silver, Washington representative of
the American Farm Bureau Federa
tion.
"We have in this country nearly
oae billion bushels of wheat," said
Mr. Silver. "The wheat market
broke from $1.40 per bushel Just
prior to the harvest, to 80 cents a
bushel, the recent price on western
farms.
Slump of $600,000,000
"This means a slump of $600,000,-
000. Since $1 of new credit will liq
uidate five times that amount of In
debtedness the loss of this $600,000,-
000 means that the farm communities
are thus dep'rived of paying off debts to the extent of $3,000,000,000.
"Thus, if 100,000,000- to 200,000,000 bushels of wheat remains on the farms until there is a market for It the farmers will be able to liquefy debts amounting to $3,000,000,000 and the wheat crop of the United States will become a much greater asset than If the old method of marketing is followed. Two Laws Aid Farmer "Before the passage of the Intermediate credits act and the amendment to tho warehouse act a farmer could not increase the Income from his wheat crop except by increasing the yield. With these two acts functioning, however, It will be en
tirely possible to get more money
for the wheat he has produced.
"By warehousing on the farm he should take advantage of the two laws which were passed especially to function In such exigencies as
this and not sell at a loss."

CHICAGO, Aug. 7. A federal amendment limiting future presidents to one term was advocated
here yesterday by Senator Albert B. Cummins (Rep., Ia.), present president pro tempore of the United States senate. Senator Cummins was en route to Washington to aid in preparations for President Harding's funeral.
"Of course President Harding would have been renominated had he lived," Senator Cummins said, "but I always have belieevd that one term is enough. The great responsibilities and the strain of the office are more than any man can stand. The president of the United States is required to exert himself almost beyond the bounds of human limitations. His cares and worries break him down. Human frailties are too great to stand the strain of the presidency. We should limit the presidency to permit-the president only one term. It might be made a six-year term.
but I am not so sure about that even. Must Be Party Leader
"Our theory of government that the
president should be the chief execu
tive of the nation has been extended
to make him' the political leader of
his party.
"President Harding gave his life to
his country and party. His death
only proves the magnitude of the position. He was so conscientious and yet so human that it hurt him to hear criticism of his efforts and false presumption of his motives and
the things he had in mind.
"One of the big problems confront-
ing'the republican party in selecting
a presidential candidate is in deter
mining the type of man to be nomi
nated, Senator Cummins said.
"That question was not in dispute in 1920," he asserted. "It was known
definitely what type the nation needed
then, and that type was personified
in Harding. We will have a dozen or more candidates next year. What
type of a man do we need?" , Extra Session Unlikely
Wisdom and propriety demand si
lence on the question at this time,
Senator Cummins believes.
"We must first recover from this
terrible" shock," he said. "But our
next convention will be a hotly con
tested one. The next session of the
congress will be tremendously Im
portant.
"If President Coolidge adopts the Harding policies there will be no
extra session. I know that President Harding . had decided definitely at this time that conditions do not war
rant a special session. Wheat and
coal problems are pressing and vital.
out there haa been no crystallized
opinion for relief for the wheat
farmer or in the coal situation."
