Silverman Wants to Bet -The inrv in the Gordon case dis agreed and on Saturday mor'ng, in the case of Eugene Culley, charged with Illicit sale of liquor, at which time Silverman wanted to bet that Culley would be acquitted, the jury brought , in a verdict of not guilty. The jury venires for these cases are selected by the chief of police and the city clerk. City Clerk Foley, who created much excitement in court about ten days ago -when the bootlegging cases began getting under way by throwing his arms about and seeking an argument with Joe Huffington of the detective association, which acted on information furnished by the Kn Klux Klan, when the police refused to act, has not teen in court for several days. It has been stated as an open fact that Foley Has gone on the bonds of bootleggers in the past. This latter statement has brought up the question of vrho went on the bond of a negro arrested last Wednesday night on the charge of transporting liquor, and when the police left two grips of liquor at the southern railroad crossing ana refused to confiscate it, telling members of the deteetive association that it was up to them to move it "because one of the two negroes got away.' The association aeiecuves took the two grips containing the liquor to the county jail. The above mentioned liquor consisted of several gallons of alcohol and twelve quarts of bonded whisky. A report rvf i"hia nrretit and confiscation has not appeared in the local newspapers. The liquor was being brought here from Chicago. Police Notified The association detectives had been notified of the shipment and told the police that the liquor was to be brought in on a certain train. That things are reaching a climax here is not to be doubted. Klan investigators, backed by the Indiana Detective Association, which is making the arrests because of the refusal of the local-police to co-operate in the clean-up, are quietly planning a new attack on the vice in Evansville. The acts of certain attorneys in court and the fact that convictions are hard to secure will lead the investigation into entirely new channels, it is understood. Attorneys have tried in every way to belittle the detective association, which is acting under the state laws of Indiana, and are working up the fires of prejudice in court by attempting to get alleged bootleggers acquitted by attacking and vilifying the Klan. Lorin Kiely, the attorney who was admonished in court on Saturday morning, and whose father is a member of the police in the sanitary department, referred to the detectives as "stool pigeons." Special Judges Demanded Judge Ireland, who demanded that there be order in the court room during his absence, has notat on any Of the cases arising from arrests made hy the detectives, the attorneys demanding special judges. Attorney John W. Spencer, who vilified the Klan on Friday, was the cause of the scathing rebuke by Judge Ireland Saturday morning. Gordon, the defendant, was In need of a defense and it is understood that Spencer virtually admitted that his only hope was to create sentiment against the Klan. His remarks created much disorder m the court room. It is understood the jury stood ten to two for conviction in the Gordon case. In the case of John Orr, which waa tried on last Tuesday and in vsrhich the jury disagreed, It is said that the vote stood ten to two for conviction. it is believed here today that per jury charges will grow out of some of the cases tried In which the de fendants were arrested by members of the detective association. Much: conflicting evidence has been heard. While this Is usual in most cases, the trials are marked with "too many alibis," as one attorney put it. Klan Membership Increases The trials are having the effect of causing the citizens of Kvansville to give more attention to certain charges made that Evansvllle -is the scene of much vice. Sarcasm and vilification by attorneys, who are seeking the release of men arrested on hootlegglng charges, Is not sitting well with thousands of Evansvine residents.
