"The press of the nation is controlled by Rome." How many times I Save heard that statement, in some form or another. Almost every ac
tive worker in Masonry sincerely believes that it is true, and is ready to revile the press for being so cowardly as to allow its fear of Rome and the Catholic church in each in
dividual community to exercise this control. Brethren, it is long past time we
all awakened and looked about us. Why is the press, the most powerful influence in the "nation, apparently under the thumb of the Catholic church? It Is not because the newspapers
and magazines are owned and oper
ated by members of the Catholic church, for there are but few such. It is because Rome is awake, and
taking every advantage of the opportunities which are open not only to the Catholic church but to every
other organization. It is because the Catholic church has realized the power wielded by the common re
porter, news-writer, feature story writer, and even the fiction writers. Through its world-wWe secret organization (which functions perfectly because it has the power to command) the church of Rome has sent into the newspaper field, the maga
zine field and the fiction field, thou
sands of its members. It does not hesitate to pick the most brilliant young men from its schools where priests are being trained, and turn
their ability into journalistic channels. Its funds are spent freely in training these young men, so that in
turning them into actual journalistic work they are among the best to be found. With its finger on the pulse of every community, it sends these experts to find positions on newspaperswherever the need of Rome
seems greatest. With their expert knowledge, they are soon placed in positions of responsibility, where it is posible for them to quietly and unobtrusively exercise a censorship over the news which the nation is to read.
j Xcr does the watchful eye of Rome
leave these prodigies to their own devices. With the direction of the priest iu each community, numerous
l lucrative odd jobs, to be done out
side working hours, are turned their way. If there are none of these, a
regular su:n is paid to these workers f r salaries of journalists are .vr.efully small.
: Here is an illustration of how it ! worked on a large newspaper on which I was employed: Two young men, members of the ; Catholic, church, had secured posi- ' tions. on the newspaper. Regularly, i they received a certain sum from the
lun ch. One was in charge "of the
city editor s desk; the other in
cnarge or sunuay teatures. in everv
possible way, these men" enlarged upon the doings of theCatho!ic church and its subsidiary organizations, and upon members of the church and their activities, whether the church were mentioned in the items or not. Masonry had no chance of lieing mentioned in any of the departments of the paper over which these men had charge. If it "became necessary
to mention the order, it was relegated to a srpall place, and the item bungled, if possible, to make it appear ridiculous. One of these men became overzcal-
ous md was discharged. Withirrsix hbins a telegram had been received by the managing editor of that newspaper, from a man in another state, asking for just such a position and offering the highest cf recommenda
tions. He was employed, and proved to be so valuable that he was promoted to one of the best positions on the paper. At first none knew his religion, but
with the opportunity, he began exercising censorship, as hi3 predecessor had done. It was the same story dver. He had been ordered to ask
for that position by the church which had him under its power. Upon investigation it was found that he had given up a place paying almost twice as much in salary, to apply for the other place and he admitted to me,
in a moment of conhdence when liquor had loosened his tongue, that the church paid him more than the difference.
This newspaper was brought into bad repute among Protestants through the activities of four members of the church of Rome, who
Business Directory
I have many times been the victim of such "frame-ups." The same condition applies to the great magazines and the news distributing organizations. How can this be overcome? There is an old saying which says that the best way to fight fire Is with fire.
This may not literally apply in this case, for no organization which
stands for liberty, as Masonry does.
would adopt the tactics used by Rome.
But why can't the Scottish Rite
members in each community search out those obscure newspaper men
who are Blue Lodge Masons and bring them into the Scottish Rite?
Why can't deserving .young Masons
who take up the newspaper game be
aided by the interest and encourage
ment of his fellow-Masons? We be
lieve in fraternity; then would it be asking too much to exercise a little
of it in this way? Another thing we have long complained about is that news of interest to Masons and concerning Masonic
activities is ignored by the press, j But we fail to furnish the press with information about the doings of our organization. We are afraid our dignity might be hurt by the common language used by the average reporter. It is true, we must uphold
the dignity of the order, but if we are careful to work with the reporter or the feature writer, it is reasonably certain that we will not be held up
to ridicule. Again, wo must always remember that what to us appears big news may not appear to the newspaper man as such an important item, since it concerns only a cer
tain class of readers and is not sup
posed to be of general interest.
Let us not be too hasty to condemn
the press because it seems to be con
trolled by Rome. There are many
great newspapers ana magazines
which are not under Rome s thumb, and thousands of smaller ones are in
no way influenced by the Catholic
church.

charged, but that the contractor, wiser and more foxy than Hamilton himself, required a notation on the building permit to this effect, is alleged. To make it "bomb-proof" it was also required that the city con
troller confirm the notation, a spe
by the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan
to present their cause to the citizens
of Gary.
The gangsters, representative of
the street bums that flock the streets
here, pitched upon two Fiery Cross
newsies. Pedestrians, witnesses of the attack, intercepted in time to pre
vent serious injuries to the victims.
Sentiment is waxing strong, be
cause of the expressed attitude of the mayor and the act of violence by
tne tnugs.
In no small way do the partisans of fair play condemn Mayor R. O.
Johnson. Himself, standing out
against the will of the people to resign from his office so that a successor can be chosen to fill the place, is not having any sympathy extended his way by the better element of the
city. Johnson was convicted by
Judge Geiger In Federal Judge An
derson s court at Indianapolis in the
recent conspiracy trials. Preparing Affidavits Affidavits, reports state, are beln:
prepared for filing against those who led in the attack upon The Fiery Cross newsies. The gang formed
from all points of the compass, blows
were struck and the crowd dispersed
immediately after the victims were
rescued.
The boys selling the papers were
Merrill Benfield, 17, and Dwight Pritchard, 18, both residents of this
city. The assault occurred Friday
night on Broadway, near Sixth ave
nue, the heart of the city's business
district. Al Zieger, a pool hall hanger-on, is charged with holding young Benfield while another gangster struck a blow to the left eye that felled him. As usually committed, in attacks of this character, the assault was from the side and behind, with two or more against one. Pritchard was struck on the left ear, but was not seriously hurt. But for the timely arrival of passersby
who noticed the gang form about the boys, and their prompt intercession
in tneir behalf, there undoubtedly
would have been serious consequences. As serious a charge as those against the hoodlums is the one charged to Police Sergeant Nathan Potts, who is alleged to have stood by and allowed the gang to perpetrate their outrageous attack. Potts was overheard to say: "Let them keep their papers off of the street."

Convicted at Indianapolis Potts is one of the gentlemen of

criminal code, a matter of infraction
in that it refers to human welfare, pertaining particularly to the building of apartment buildings. That Francis Hamilton, the building commissioner, was appointed to the position without passing the ne
cessary examination, on orders and pressure, and even threats from "Dollar Bill" Lew Hamilton, is charged. Even Bill Armitage himself admitted this fact and it is understood that the appointment of Hamilton under
these conditions was the payment
of a political debt to "Dollar Bill" Lew, who, it is charged, contributed
a vast sum of money to the Shank
campaign has been alleged by those
inside the Shank administration Itself, indicating that all is not har
mony, and "all is not gold that glitters" in the city administration. The criminal phases of this parti
cular and amazing situation are being fully investigated to ascertain the definite criminal liability, if any, of both the building commissioner and those who accepted, knowingly, special concessions and favors.

obeyed the orders of that church in censoring the news which passed through their hands. It was owned
and managed by Scottish Rite Masons, yet they had failed to discover the cause of the trouble, so
smoothly was the work performed. In a spirit of Masonic helpfulness I went to them and informed them of the conditions. They scoffed at the idea, but they began to open their eyes. It was not long before they realized the trouble and began drop
ping tho trouble makers. As fast as
they were dropped others were sent
in, and it is impossible, even today, to keep them out.
Why is it Impossible to keep them
out? Because, there are so few Ala-
sons in the journalistic professions. In that entire state I was the only Scottish Rite Mason who was ac
tively engaged in handling or writing news for a metropolitan news
paper. There are plenty of Scottish j Rita men to be found in the a'dver-
tising and business departments of these newspapers, but only one who
was turning out the news from which the newspapers' readers formed their opinions.
With three or lour men under the
direction of the church of Rome, em
ployed with a half a .hundred who are indiscriminately scattered among
a few Protestant churches, or who profess no religious belief, it is easy
to bring any person who does not
believe as these three or four be
lieve, into bad repute and disgrace.
(By Staff Correspondent)
HOBART, Ind., July 3. Gary and
other cities of the Calumet district
came in for a ringing criticism at
the hands of an unnamed speaker for the KU Klux Klan at a meeting by the organization here. 'The meeting was originally scheduled for Gary, but, after a week's deliberation by Mayor R. O. Johnson and a final refusal by him to issue a permit, officials of the Klan announced the change of "location" to Hobart.
A thousand people journeyed here from Gary. The meeting had been widely advertised as an oppoi-tunity for Gary folk to hear expounded the
principles for which the 100 per cent
Americans stand.
Automobiles in endless procession
lined the roads leading into Hobart.
At their destination, a squad of robed
knights directed their parking and
handled the big crowd with" ease. An eloquent speaker held his hear
ers together formore than an hour.
"America," he said, in the course of his appeal for a better America,
"America has been called the melting
pot of the world and It is. The pot
Is boiling.
Alluding to East Chicago, Gary and
other Calumet cities, he said the "pot
will soon boil over in those clues
where the balance of power is held by foreigners and persons holding no
property.
The speaker saw wis condition de
manded stricter immigration stat
utes, especially against those people
who are not willing to accept America's traditions and live by Its laws. The meeting closed witha prayer led by a Hobart churchman. Conservative estimates places the crowd that attended the Hobart meeting at 6,000.
cused of being a henchman for the bootleggers, but no effort has been
made to remove him from the department.
The fight occurred near Umpleby's
pool hall, a resort that homes the
gangsters and would-be prize fighters of the town. The place is notorious.
common report saying Umpleby is operating a thriving gambling hall
upstairs over the hall
The most of the gang came out of Umpleby's, it is said. The lateness
of the hour and the suddenness of
the attack lent themselves favorably
to concealing their identity and the
naming of the entire party composing
the gang Is not yet complete,
The stand taken by Mayor Johnson earlier in the week, even more than
did the gang's attack upon the two
boys, serve to crystallize public sen
timent in favor of the Ku Klux Klan
This much is certain. A backslid
ing, undetermined politician, looking
first to one side ana then another,
to obtain a consensus of opinion that
will serve his own best purpose
marked the inspiration of Johnson
and his final refusal to permit the hearing of a speaker in the interests
of the organization.
At first Klan representatives
sought the mayor. His consent, he said, depended upon the approval by the board cf park commissioners. This approval was not forthcoming
and the matter was again taken up with the mayor with the result the matter was held pending for a series of conferences, finally decided by the mayor adversely to the Klan's interests. Presrstorles Not Flattering Press stories expounded the position taken by the mayor as vacilla-
tory. Information came out that the "invisible empire" would not insist
upon holding the meeting at tne present time, but would, instead, call
upon all those wno wouia near me
tenets and principles of the organiza
tion discussed to travel to Houart
and there hear the discussion. Final
decision came after a two-hour con
ference with Mayor Johnson the Tuesday previous.
