Maryland and Delaware Burn One Hundred and Fifty Crosses Simultaneously
(Special to The Fiery Cross.) WASHINGTON, D. C, May 28 One of the greatest Klan demonstra
tions ever held was staged Jlonday
night in Maryland and Delaware,
when simultaneously at 9 p. m. fiery crosses broke into light in 150 different places in these two states. The demonstration launched an intensive drive on the part of the Klan tcTorganize these two states in full.
Maryland,- the strongest Catholic
state in the United States, is to re
ceive special attention that the opposition to the Catholics can be organized, which means the dropping
of party politics in the coming elec
ton and concentrating Protestant
votes on Protestants.
Among the Maryland cities to have
demonstrations Monday were "Balti
more with twenty-five crosses, one for each of the twenty-five Klaus in
the city; Annapolis, home of the naval academy; Takoma Park, on the outskirts of the capital,- and
other leading cities.
At Marion, Md., Sunday night, a Methodist pastor preached a sermon
lauding the aims of the Klan.
The movement is growing stronger
in this section all the while and the rapid increase in the number of
Klans indicates the awakening realization on the part of ihe loyal Americans that the Klan fills a need- that
is growing greater year by year as the menace of Catholicism in politics increases.
COLUMBUS, Ind.. May 26.
Fleaded by five mounted Klansmen in full regalia, and with visors up.
the Ku Klux Klan of this city paraded
the principal streets or Columbus tonight before thousands of persons
who lined the streets. Continuous
hand-clapping greeted the marchers
as they made their way through the streets to the strains of the Muncie
Klan band, -h& band gave a concert
in Comnrcial park after the rjarade
and was greeted with much applause following each number.
As early-as five o'clock autoists be
gan to park along the line of march
and by eight o"elock every street in the business district was filled with parked autos and late arrivals were
forced to ride to the residence dis
trict of the city to find space for
parking. The feature of the parade
was an automobile bearing a big red electrical cross which presented a most beautiful sight.
The Women's Organization was given a place in the procession and about two hundred members were in line. - They were greeted with applause as they marched. Speaker Delivers Address Following the concert at the jark, a speaker delivered an address on Americanism. Despite a continuous drizzle, the big crowd, which num
bered about 5,000, remained untjl the
last words of the speaker noatea
over the' night air.
The speaker was interrupted at
frequent intervals by loud applause and cheering. He pointed out to his
auditors how the foreign influence
was menacing America. He told of
how immigrants to America, who could neither read nor write, and knew nothing of American principles
or ideals, were permitted to vote,
and how that vote was used by the
influences ,that are trying to take
control of this country from the real
Americans.
"The chief reason that the Ku Klux
Klan makes the foreign influences
mad," he said, "is because it is evi
dence that real Americans have at
last awakened. They wanted us to
sleep on."
" MIAMI, Fla., May 29At a big ceremonial held on Star Island by. the Ku Klux Klan, recently, it was a sight to see. the motorcycle police ride at the head of a thrilling parade by the Klansmen. The police, aided by robed Klansmen along the line of march, handled the traffic in ' a most admirable manner. The sight presented quite a different angle as in some places, where the police, instead of escorting a parade by Klansmen, try to arrest them.
New Ross Gets Place on Map Cross Is J5urned
NEW ROSS, Ind., May" 28. This town was put on the map of Klandom on last Thursday night when a fiery cross was burned. On Friday night a speaker gave an address on "True Americanism,'" at the opera house, and it was received with much ap
plause. Despite the fact that it rained hard before the time for the
speaking to start, the opera house was filled to capacity. While, it is
felt here that there are many-mem
bers of the Ku Klux Klan in this vi
cinity, the demonstration and speaking were the first public acts denoting the existence of a Klan at this place.
Quaint Ohio Town Is . Given a Sudden Thrill
UPPER SANDUSKY, Ohio, May 28. This quaint town, In which is located the old Indian church -which, houses a register in which are Inscribed the names of travelers ffrojaall over the world, was given a thrill last week when a huge fiery cross
suddenly flamed forth at the western corporate limits. Many hundreds of persons viewed the burning cross which was lighted just after the close of the first canvas show that had been here for more than- fifteen years. .
SERIOUS READING YALUABLE In a recent--interview, William
Maxwell, vice-president of the Thomas A. Edison Company,, stated what he would do If he were twentyone again. "Were I twenty-one again, I should do a great deal of reading. Six hours each week of serious reading is not much, but it may mean the difference between the
$20,tK)0 executive and the $25 a week clerk."

Prejudice Smashed at Sandusky
and Klan Adds Many Mem bers Enemy Efforts React
SANDUSKY, Ohio, May 28. The
local organization cf the Ku Klux
Klan in this city is now coming into its own with a bang. Membership is increasing at a most gratifying rate
and with the exposure of the many
fakes in the propaganda of the opposition, the local organization has
increased its membership almost 200
per cent in the past three months.
Some of the most influential men in Sandusky have joined the ranks
of the Klan, large crowds have turned out to hear addresses on
Americanism, and the prejudices that existed here several months ago
have melted away with a knowledge of what the Klan really is. The opposition is fast losing heart at the rapid growth of the organization here and is desperate in its attempts
to belittle the Klan. Every pressure
possible has been brought to bear, but all without avail. The Klan is
marching right along and swelling its ranks with 100 per cent Americans.
Many of the efforts by those who
are opposed to the Klan have reacted and in the end have aided in Klan
growth here.

parade through the heart of the city
a public speaking on the courthouse lawn, and a public initiation at the fair grounds, all last Tuesday night,
marked the first open demonstration
cf the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan

Throughout Tuesday aft e r n o o n
cars filled with men poured into this
city, the majority of them coming
from Fountain. Warren and Vermu
ion (Illinois) counties. At seven
o'clock a guard of white-robed fig
ures was thrown about the fair grounds, and only certified Klansmen permitted to enter. The men robed
in the agricultural hall, where they
were addressed by the kleagle. Immediately after, seventy robed Klans
men marched to the downtown dis
trict behind the fiery cross, and after circling the courthouse, came to a
stop on the east side of the square. A large lighted platform had been erected previously, and thirteen of the men formed a semicircle on it, the remainder of the Klansmen sur
rounding the stand.
Crowd Is Orderly Just as the city clock was striking
nine, the speaker arose on the stand.
and for thirty minutes held spell
bound the thousands of people who filled the lawn, streets and nearby
buildings. .The large crowd was
very orderly, and applauded the
speaker frequently. At the conclu
sion of the speaker's remarks, the crowd shouted for additional information, and the speaker continued for ten minutes longer. Following his
talk a vote of approval was taken by the crowd, endorsing all the
speaker had said.
The speaker was an ex-service
man, having spent eighteen months
in the army, and the brother of two
other overseas men, one of whom lost
his life for the -cause m France. The
speaker declared that he had. no de
fense to make for the Ku Klux Klan,
for to defend it would be to defend
its ideals, and no such defense would
ever be necessary.
Following the speaking, the crowd
followed the marching Klansmen to
the fair grounds and found seats In

about seventy-five candidates formed
