LANCASTER, Ohio, May 26.- The citizens of Carroll, located in Fairfield county, were greeted with a
peculiar sight one night last week when the number of automobiles parked in the village extended be
yond the corporate limits of the town. The occasion was that of a big mass meeting held in the biggest hall in town and at which many were turned away on account of lack of spacer The meeting was held by the Ku Klux Klan and following a speech by a well-known speaker, the Klan held a ceremony at which a big number of
men were initiated into tne organization. It was pointed out that
Fairfield county was the home of
i some of our greatest American lead
ers and generals and it is not surprising that the county is strongly in line for the-great Protestant and patriotic movement.

was announced in the papers throughout thecountry that the
Knights of Columbus had raised a large sum of money with which it
was proposed to superintend the
writing of a history of America, which would meet with their approval. According to these an
nouncements the American history
books as taught throughout our public schools, were bitterly denounced as being Anglicized and met with the strong disapproval of the Roman Catholic church. The complaint was also indulged that, owing to this English influence, the Spanish claims to American culture and achievements were not properly taught through these books. It would be well, before forming an opinion upon this subject, for
those who are looking into American history books to stop and recall certain significant facts which it would be wise to take into consideration in connection with this criticism by the Knights of Columbus.

England Enemy to Rome It will be recalled that the great
arch enemy to the Roman CatholicH church of Europe in the past was England. The religion which flourished during the Medieval ages was a mixture of sensualism and mysticism the beliefs of Roman paganism, masquerading as Christianity, but which in reality toore no resemblance whatever to the teachings of Christ Jesus and his apostles. Corruption and iniquity flourished with
in the church and was condoned and trafficked in for worldly gain. During ttre Dark Ages the -ehurch degenerated into a system of complete pa
ganism with all the image worship, mystery and superstition which
characterized the heathen beliefs of
Romas, mythology, Assyria and Babylon.- This state of iniquity had
reached its zenith, the church rode triumphant over the souls and bodies
of men, until about the twelfth century, when the downtrodden and oppressed began to rebel. Protests against the Papal outrages began to be heard throughout Europe, but the first definite step which marked the
breaking of the Papal bondage and the beginning of that glorious "liberty oi the children of God" was taken in England, when in the fourteenth century, John Wycliff gave to the Anglo-Saxon people the first
j English translation of the Holy ! Bible, and England became. "The j country of one Book." Up until this time the Bible had beet: a closed : book to the great masses of the peopie, awing to the fact that its only translation permitted by the church i had been in Latin. That the great I masses of the Anglo-Saxon people
should be permitted to read the Holy Scriptures in their own tongue meant the freedom to think for themselves to uncover the deceptions and hypocrisies of the Church of Rome and to dispel the mystery, superstition and fear with which the hierarchy had for centuries enslaved them. It can be readily understood why the Church of Rome bitterly fought
the translation of the Holy Bible into the language of the people. If there is one thing the powers of darkness
dread it is the light of troth, which
j ramates from the Word of God. It is interesting to know that in the ! practice of this English translation
of the Scriptures, John Wycliff wrote
"Tlii Bible is for the government o
jthe people, by the peoirfe, and for the i people." This clearly shows that the
oniy real foundation npon .which a
i government can be successfully
i built is the Word of God. Comment-
ing upon this subject recently, a cer
tain writer says, that "A government , upon that basis is democratic, be-
i cause in it the individual can not jevarte-his responsibility. Right law, i and right government, separated
from God is impossible; hence the obvious conclusion that democracy can succeed only as it maintains its essential relation to divine thingss." The Leaven of Truth In view of this great fermenting of Truth which began when the open Bible wa9 given into the hands of
the masses of the English speaking
people, one can readily understand the next great step, tords human rights which was obtained at Runnymedc, when the Great Charter was obtained by the people and became the basis of civil rights in all AngloSaxon countries. Inspired and guided by an open Bible, the Word of God, the Anglo-Saxon spirit of the "liberty wherewith Christ has made us free," has moved steadily onward until the Anglo-Saxon nations enjoy the freest and most democratic government in the world. The King James translation of.the English Bible, which followed, is today the
standard version used throughout Protestant Christendoms The same spirit of liberty, born of the under
standing or man s mrtnngnt as a freeborn child ' of God later brought
to the shores of this country those" brave Puritan men and women who
sought freedom to worship God ac
cording to their own conscience. The
same spirit was moving in England
in the Great Rebellion, and again in
Lthat great Revolution which freed
the American colonies from the des
potic rule of the German, George III
of England. The freeing of the
slaves in the British West Indies
and in the United States, under
God inspired Lincoln, all point back
in a pathway of light shed from the
tages of an open Bible. Small won
tier that the church of Rome today
hates England and is constantly doing all In her power to disrupt the
British Empire, and through the
most insidious and persistent propa
ganda spreading throughout this
country and especially through the
teacnings oi our iree punnc schools
a distrust and hatred of the United
Kingdom. Rome 4s today doing all in her power to keep the two great Anglo-Saxon, Bible-reading naiions
of the earth apart, for in their united
leadership of the world she sees her certain doom. Encyclical Letter of Leo XIII As to the Spanish claim, in America, Pope Leo XIII in his Encyclical letter of'December 25, 1891, makes the Roman Catholic position exceedingly clear. He saysT "The Ameri
can republic under Protestant rulers is with the worst enemies of the church. The republic having seized upon the lands discoveredby Christopher Columbus, a Catholic, and usurped the authority and jur
isdiction of the supreme head or the church, the United States is filled with obscure heretics. The Catholics have been oppressed and preachers of iniquity established." One can easily understand from this the purpose of the Knights of Columbus today, and their contempt for the pilgrim fathers, and everything that breathes forth thepirit of truth, radiating from the iopen
Bible. They can not forget that it was the pilgrims from England who
brought to these shores that same Bible, and that those great principles
and ideals derived from the inspira
tion of its pages formed the foundation of this great government. A Spanish influence in this coun try means a Roman Catholic influ ence. America wants none of it.

"Manhood of America" Talk Well Received
BARNESVILLE, O., May 28. In a
farewell sermon here last Sunday night, at ' which the church was
packed to overflowing and the Sunday , school room opened to accom
modate the big audience, Rev. T. T. Bass delivered a sermon which was
taken as most favorable to the Ku
Klux-Klan.
"In other- cities, organizations which plotted to overthrow the United States government have always found places in which' to meet," said Rev. Bass. "But right here in Barnesville an organization which is 100 per cent American can not find a place to meet. It will meet, however, if it has to gather on the hillsides nearby." Sermon Well Received The sermon was a farewell sermon by Rev. Bass, who Monday took up

NEWARK, Ohio, May 28. That the Ku Klux Klan is very much alive in
Newark is seen in the big open-air
meetings which are held each week
and at which candidates are regu
larly taken into the organization
Much enthusiasm is shown here and
the Klan is held in high esteem
except, of course, by those of
tne opposition. However, among
the better elements in Newark,
which have not as yet become
identified witn tne organization as
members, the Klan is looked upon as
an organization fostering the highest
American ideals. - Growing Kapidly The membership, it is understood, is growing at a most rapid rate.
This information not only comesj
from sources close to the Klan, but is admitted by the opposition, as it is known that many candidates are
nade members eacli week. The many
ceremonials and the burning of fiery crosses indicate the growing strength
of the Ku Klux Klan in and near Newark.
The vice conditions in. Newark are
deplorable and it is now hoped by
the citizens that these conditions will
be righted to a great extent through the moral influence of the Klan as
well as court action that may be
taken by that organization to force
the authorities to "clean house."
TWO CROSSES BURN
AS FLAG IS RAISED
ALEXANDRIA VIEWS KU KLUX PARADE
ALEXANDRIA, Ind., May 28. A
crowd estimated at about 7,000 persons last Friday night witnessed the Ku Klux Klan of this city give a ' parade in which about T;00 Klansmen took part. The parade was led by four mounted Klansmen who were immediately followed by the Muncie Klan band. At intervals throughout the procession were flag bearers. A drum corps also- took part in" the paade. Three automobiles bearing fiery crosses brought much applause. The chief of these was the big red
electrical cross from Muncie. The cross was five feet high and on, each side was an American flag. It was carried on the radiator of the car.
(By Staff Correspondent) HAMMOND, Ind., May 28. A spec
tacular flag-raising demonstration in connection with the burning of
two mammoth 'crosses occurred at the new Turner field diamond here
Friday night.
Old Glory was raised on the field's flagstaff and a spotlight turned alter
nately upon the stars and stripes. Two crosses, each twenty-feet high, built of two-by-fours, two thick, were
set aflame.
The spectacle was witnessed for
blocks around.
The streets in the vicinity of the
ball -park were packed with people,
who watched the crosses burn for hours. No effort was made to put out the fires and the cross erected just outside the fence was still
smouldering at 5 o'clock Saturday
morning.
William Beatty president of the park board, instructed the grounds
tender at the field to lower the flag hoisted by the Klansmen .so that the flag to be unfurled to the winds
at the flag-raising ceremonies con
ducted this afternoon by boy scouts
could be carried out as previously ar
ranged.
Residents in the vicinity of the two spots where the crosses burned were unaware of the demonstration until a blaze shot forth from both
crosses.
The Turner field grounds were not damaged in any way, as the cross
near the park was erected on vacant ground. The burning of the crosses
have led park afficials to believe that the Ku Klux Klan is friendly to the
Turner field project.
