KLAN STARTS DRIVE
IN STEUBENVULE, 0. (Continued from Page 2, Column 5) the announced platform of firing the chief and appointing a new one In his place. He tried to. found the Civil Service Commission legally compelled to fieht thn ehiof'a hattio for retention, and got tired, lazy at " juo, ana let it go hang.' " "Then the mayor is part and parcel to the ccmbination?" "Yes. he's OUit fie-htintr Tho fhiof of police, seems to have linked him4 seit up with the machine, and this will mean his Waterloo for reelection." Pet questions and answers, but they form the consensus of opinion in this community. Everybody finds fault; none of the. i like it except the few who are out for an open town because it helps their business. Klan In the Open "And what do tlie law-respecting citizens of Steuoenville think of the Ku K!ux Klan?" "After tins events of this week, we think well of it. We g-ive it Godspeed in its mission. The Klan aijiwe endorse those principles of it tor mora! rectitude has played its hand in the oyer, and what we saw of its machinations, we like It."' The Ku Klux Klan played in the open, aligned with the better element in favor of law enforcement Those critical of the "Invisible Empire" wilt herein tind the Khtn's reason for secrecy. As dramatic an incident as the raids by state officers, was the openair meeting in front of the courthouse steps. A crowd estimated at more than 1,000 heard a Klan speaker explain the tenets and principles of the "Invisible Empire," cheered his arguments for a moral and patriotic awakening and yelled in concord with his attacks upon city andfeounty officials. Speaker Hits Hr.rd The speaker repeated that tho Knights of the Ku Klux Klan stood for law enforcement through the constituted authorities, that the demand for a Steuhenville clean-up had been made to Mayor Hawkins. "The mayor has given brothel keepers heavy fines. Why doesn't the prosecuting attorney til$ suits in abatement and close these places?'' Tlie speaker then called out if the prosecutor was in the audience. "I want to ask you why you tion t do it.'' he shouted. Then ho hit a body blow at the chief of polic- " - "The chief has in his nork.-t and has had for sixty hours, a warrant for a bawdy houst on Washington avenue. It is not a John Doe war rant. It gives the name of the keener Why doesn't he serve that warrant?" With his voice risinsr. the sneaVer continued: "Mr. Police Chief, if you are In this audience, show yourself. Or is your face too red to show?" To the general laughter and cheering that greeted these thrusts at the local authorities the Knanl.-oe added that there were instances of maiteasance in office and proper steps should be taken to force these gentlemen to proper official conduct. "We're not here to fight you; we want to co-operate with you," the speaker insisted. "If you are puppets and others are pulling the strings, we are here to cut those strings." BOOTLEGGERS FINED; KLAN AIDS OFFICERS Law Violators at Chillicothe, O., Worried Over Growth of the Organization CHILLICOTHE, Ohio, May 28. With the steady growth of the Klan in this city, a cleanup among bootleggers is now being conducted. Among those who got the stiffest fines was Dan Fisher, who was fined $500 after pleading guilty, and Frank Hite, who drew down a fine of $400. The Klan in this city is following the same course as that taken by the organization in other places, and is assisting in every way in aiding the officials in cleaning up the vice conditions that exist. Klansmen here are co-operating in every way possible with those officials who show that they are in earnest in bringing law violators to justice. Bootleggers are worrying over the gro-vth of the Klan in Chillicothe, as are other persons running contrary to the law. Many of those citizens who are not members of thr nrirani. zation are taking an entirely different attitude toward the Klan and the result is that the organizaion is swelling its ranks at a very fast pace. Fresent School With Flag On last Saturday evening the Klan presented a large American flag to the Western public school here and immediately following the presentation, a huge fiery cross suddenly flared forth, in the school yard. About an hour later another cross flared up at the corner of Water and Paint streets. Attcmnta hv n men to knock the cross down as they yasseu it were unsuccessful. It is understood her thatlhere Is to be a hurre demonstrati rtn hv tit a Klan in, the near future at which several hundred candidates will be initiated into the organization. KLANSMEN HOLD BARBECUE BLACKVILLE, S.'0., -May 28. A great crowd of Klansmen staged a parade here, led by one- member carrying a fiery cross, after which a barbecue sapper was held. More than 500 Klansmen took part.
THE FIERY CROSS
LEW RETREATS UNDER CAMOUFLAGE (Continued from Page 1, Column 7) didn't stick, at least to all appearances, as close as Bill, his brother, who has never been arreted by the police and who was a great friend of Captain Pope (who is now In Linger a Little Longer Lew's office as a bodyguard), under a former administration. This same Captain Pope is the man who was convicted at the time Chief of Police Perrott was sentenced, and who was taken back on the force by Lintrer a Little Loncrer Lew and made a captain in less than a year. Peculiar as it may seem, Captain Clande Worley, reduced in rank by Linger a Little Longer Lew, was tlie man behind the gnn in the Perrott and Pope convictions. Undaunted, however, in his fight against the vice element. Captain Worley, aided by Klau investigators, is perfecting an organization that will strike terror to the very heart of the underworld and bring about convictions that will entangle those who have thus far escaped the law through influences "higher-up." The Net Being Cast Working from the ofiice of the prosecuting attorney, with the powers of a deputy sheriif, Captain Worley is slowly but surely casting a net that will ensnare those whose activities rip wide open the moral fabric of Indianapolis. Aided by the Ku Klux Klan, in the absence of the police department, Captain WTorley is steadily at work on "deep sea fishing" as stated in The Fiery Cross of last week. In the meantime, Linger a Little Longer Lew may continue to lead Italian bands (despite the city is full of American musicians) to Garfield Park and interrupt public school entertainments by ordering the band to play the 'Star Spangled Banner," and having it fall down on the job after the first few bars. And, it might be added, alleged Klansmen in the city hall are still at work following the defi issued to Linger a Little Longer Lew by The Fiery Cross. BARRY SCANLON GETS WALLOP LN COURT Attempt by "Unity Leaguer" to "Get Even" Falls Flat in District Court (By Staff. Correspondent) SOUTH BEND, Ind., May 22. Barry Scanlon, an alias for the man who has won a notorious reputation . for himself in defending underworld characters, and has become prominently identified with the local organization of the American Unity League, has found himself whipped at his own game. In court, as complaining witness in the case of State vs. William Johnson, a local contractor, the jury listened attentively to witnesses who described the beating Scanlon , received at Johnson's hands and, after an hour's deliberation, found the defendant not guilty. Very few people in this city there are who do not know Barry Scanlon, the former nickelodeon singer. His eputation as a police court lawyer s known by all. Ever since his ad mission to the bar, he has pled the cause cf the undesirables. He is aleged to own houses of ill repute. Great, Divorce Lawyer But Scanlon iroes further. Vpnnla here pride him as the best lil" divm-co court lawyer in and about this vicinity and it was in this particular phase of his business that he got himself into trouble. In and out of declared Johnson, "Scanlon said un complimentary things about Mrs. jonnson, iormeny Mrs. Kouert Kizer. The occasion was after the time when Mrs. Kizer was divorced from her former husband, who Scanlon represented m that instance. Mrs. Kizer, then Mrs. Johnson, went to court to obtain the ciiRtodv of a daughter previouely entrusted io tuzer s care. Tiie alleged remarks which Johnson complained of were, according to Johnson, true to Scanlon fame. On the dav Of thfl pltpropMnn February 12, last, he confronted Scanlon in the lobby of the Farmers Trust building, with the report that Scanlon had been loose with his tongue and, he told the jury, Scanlon repeated his defamatorv insult. Scan. Ion, he testified, then removed his glasses and started to take his hand out or nis overcoaU pocket. Johnson told that he had heard Scanlon was a bad character and that he carried a weapon. Scanlon, after a jury had given him the laugh, a laugh that has been taken up by some otMa friends and acquaintances as "one on him," is nursinj? his grudge. Like the noor sport that commCh reports credit him, it la said of Scanlon that he is out "to get Johnson." "There are other ways" besides courts," is a remark going the rounds. Friends of Johnson, and the whole city, with a few exceptions, have a warm spot iff their hearts for him, have requested Johnson to carry a gun in self-defense. CARD OF THANES To the Editor of the Fiery Cross; Sir. We wish to express our gratitude and offer our heartfelt thanks to the Knights of the Kn Klux Klan through tho columns of your papw for the sympathy and services rendered us during or bereavement and death of our beloved husband and brother, Chester M. PUBLIC SENTIMENT
SWERVES TO KLAN COLUMBUS, O., May 28. The second outdoor naturalization of the season will be held "somewhere in Franklin county" by Buckeye Klan No. 8 on Saturday night June 2, it became known today. It is expected at that time that 2,000 men wfll be admitted to citizenship in the "Invisible Empire." The first open air ceremonial was held May 4, when 1,500 candidates were admitted after a down-town street parade. Fireworks and a speech drew the public to "Smith's Forty Acres" where the Klonvocation was held, but the coming one will be more a Klan affair and the public will be kept at a distance. As long as the good weather continues monthly Klonvocations for the naturalization of candidates to the Columbus organization, will be held in the country. Tha parade on May 4 did much to dispel a lot of the "bogey man" stories that had spread relative to the organization. It created public sentiment in favor of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan and the Klan here is reaping the benefit. WHY XOT-B. B. MOP Sold Everywhere Mop Heads and Brushes THE BREWER MFG. CO. 431 S. The church began filling more than an hour before the time set for the speaker to begin and was packed to overflowing before eight o'clock. A fifteen-piece orchestra fumsheil music from seven.thirty until the speaker appeared. Much favorable comment has been heard in regard to the words delivered by the speaker and the sentiment at this place is strongly in favor of the Ku Klux Klan.
