The noise and tumult of opposition to the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan emanates from thoughtless, unreasoning prejudice of about 20 per cent of the people. The other 80 per cent are quietly" doing their own thinking and firmly placing the stamp of approval on the wonderful work of the Klan. The Fiery Cross, the only Protestant newspaper in the Central West, gives FACTS to this great body of influential citizens, and these facts are affirmatively received by this vast percentage of Protestant minds, representing 80 per cent of the population. SERIOUS SITUATION
FACES PROTESTANT CHURCHES IN EUROPE Many Edifices Destroyed in War and Funds Are Badly Needed Faithful Pastors Find Work as Clerks in Order to Provide Life's Necessities (By Staff Correspondent) COLUMBUS, O., May 28. The Roman Catholic church throughout Europe presents such a solid front that the Protestant churches ot the continent are threatened with destruction unless help is received from some great outside Protestant country, declared Dr. Adolph Keller, of Zurich, Switzerland, speaking before a gathering at the First Congregational church here as a representative of the Central Bureau for Relief of Evangelical churches of Europe. Many Protestant churches were destroyed in the war. Others are bo short of necessary funds that they can not long carry on the message of Protestantism, without outside aid, he asserted. Ministers are so poorly paid that they are forced to-r worK as chauffeurs, banr clerks and even junk dealers to make a meager existence. The congregations of the evangelical churches are mostly middle class people who at present are the hardest hit economically in Europe. A diversity of denominations is serious enough in a country where Protestant churches are in the majority, but in Europe where Catholicism is predominant such a situation holds evil portent. "Denominational work has built the first bridge between America and Europe, but if the real work is to be accomplished, there must be a combined interdenominational movement," Dr. Keller concluded. EVIL ELEMENT IN RENSSELAER SCARED Klan's Growth Throws Fear Into Hearts of Law Breakers Civic Change Made REXSSELAER, Ind., May 25. Bootleggers, grafters, gamblers and other enemies of 100 per cent Americanism, are nearing the verge of nervous prostration since the burning of a fiery cross in'Milroy park on last Saturday night and the rumor that more than 1.200 men have become members of the Ku Klux Klan. It has been stated that officials, bankers, clergymen, farmers, business men, mechanics and professional men are' members of the organization in this county. The enthusiasm displayed by the big throng that witnessed the burning of the cross, bears out this statement. Friendly to Klan It is said that in the organization of the Chamber of Commerce last week all the officials elected are friendly to the Klan. This' is a change from the past as it has long been the situation here that those who now form a nart of tlio nnnnoi. Kion dominated the civic affairs of tne community. The change is welcamc-d here and it is believed that the Klan has had much influence in bringing about that which it is felt will react to the benefit of the city. KLAN LAUDED FOR CHARITABLE ACTS Organization at Caldwell, Ohio, Aids Many Unfortunate Persons Crosses Burned CALDWELL, Ohio, Mav 29. The many acts of charity performed by the KlaiMn this city is causing much favorable comment among the citizens of this place and in Noble county. One of the. most pathetic incidents in connection with the charity work being performed by the Klan came to light last week when a truck load of nrovisinna wum tni into the country tsan aged couple in ueamuie circumstances, upon arrival of the Klansmen, who were forced to carry the big baskets of food up a steep grade to the house, the aged woman cried to her husband. Who is nafit Piirhtv vogra age: "Thank God, dad, our prayers have been answered!" The old couple, whose name is Solomon, were auerwara Drougnt to Caldwell, together with an afflicted granddaughter, and fitted out with proper clothing and given a substantial purse. Many fiery crosses are being burned in and near Caldwell and the membership is growing very fast Last Saturday night a big cross was burned on the public square and was witnessed by many hundreds of persons. GROWTH FAST AT SHIRLEY SHIRLEY, Ind., May 28. The burning of two large fiery crosses at this place on last Saturday night was witnessed by a large number of persons.
