RODGERS HAS TILT

WITH PROSECUTOR

Prosecutor Follows Shank Tactics and Is Not to Be Outdone by Indianapolis Mayor

Carlisle. Ind., May 7. Ertley W

-Rodgers, editor and publisher of the Carlisle News, is just at this time

having a see-saw tilt With Norval K

Harris, prosecuting attorney of this

county, concerning law violations

Mr. Harris, prosecutor, in a letter to Mr. Rodgers, follows a line quite parallel to the late tactics pursued

by "Limber Lunged Lew," mayor of

Indianapolis, in hts dealings with the editor of The Fiery Cross, calling on him to let htm know of gambling and other forms of lawlessness. Mr. Itodgers, however, is too wise for the prosecutor, and refused to furnish i.ini, with such information unless h has some assurance that

they will be prosecuted under correct name, and the names fur at shed

in the information by Mr. Rodgers.

He also reiers to a number of fohn Doe" search warrants issued

some weeks ago, wntcn nave not

been used. If the officers are so ready to search on warrants duly received, why do they not act on those they already have?

Edlcy Rodgers seems to have the best of the argument, and further pointing out that the whole matter is a "'series of nice little tips," with search warrants given to Town Mar

shal Newman Guy, and should raids be made on warrants, a

"water haul" would probably result

Valparaiso, Ind., May 2. The big

doin s this month in Klandom will

have its setting in Porter county. And there's going to be the real

doin's, at that.

The celebration is planned for the

day and night of May 19.

The feature will be an old-time

frontier fete with cowboys and mustangs. . The chap-wearers will be imported from the plains of Texas, and provide all the old thrills and

some new ones.

The celebration will be the first in which the woman's organization will have an active part The

ladies are carrying out plans for en-! tertainment of visiting sisters and have been assigned the place of honor in the parade during the evening. The women must come. Several thousand dollars have been spent for supplies for the day. Promised are twenty brass bands. Five nationally known speakers will furnish the oratory. Trips to the

sand dunes are planned and last, but not least, the 300 students of

the Valparaiso University are planning a welcome to former students and produce a thrill of their own. Porter county has many objects of interest. It is easily reached by automobile from any part of the state and visiting Klansmen are assured of as good a time as American hospitality can provide.

Knock off work for the day and

come to Valparaiso on the 19th.

Danville, 111., May 5. Crowding the Palace theater to its capacity, hundreds of Danville people listened attentively for more than an hour and a quarter to Rev. George M. Jordon, formerly pastor of the Presbyterian church at Rossville, talk Tuesday night on "One Hundred Per Cent Americanism." The purposes of the Knights of Ku Klux Klan and the necessity of such an organization in the United States were set forth in detailed

statements by the Rev. Mr. Jordon. He urged the passage of strict immigration laws, and that illiterate foreigners be hot allowed the ballot for five years after their arrival.

While he showed no , favoritism among nationalities, he quoted government statistics showing that immigrants from northern Europe who come to the United States more

readily adapt themselves to the country than do those from southern European countries who congregate in settlements, only IT per cent of whom become naturalized. (Jives Klan Stand

In commenting upon the Roman 1 Catholic situation in America, Jori don declared the Ku Klux Klan was I solidly in favor of complete separa-

I tion of church and state. On the negro question he de- ! clared the Klan was absolutely for j white supremacy, the abolishing of j the intermingling of races and the

j control of negro votes by unscrupulous politicians. "Let the Jews keep their stores, their industries and places of wor

ship, but also give the Americans a chance to flourish and to enjoy life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as set forth in the constitution," was Rev. Jordon's summary of the Klan's staud on the Jew in America. The meeting was closed by prayer by Rev. Albert Millican, pastor of the Church of Christ at Bismarck, who also introduced the speaker. Music was furnished by a local orchestra.

Lebanon, Ind., May 5. A spirited address on "Americanism" was de

livered here last Sunday night by Jev. B. A. Hartley, at the First Christian church. Rev. Hartley built the major points of iiis address about four great principles of civil liberty in America "the Christian home, the

Christian church, the public schools, law and constitution of the United States." Rev. Hartley spoke most interestingly of the origin of the Klan movement and especially the condition which made the original Klan a necessity and so effective

after the war. He clearly proved

that the chief aim of the organiza

tion was better citizenship, truth

freedom and safety with malice to

ward none but charity for all, under the Stars and Sripes of Old Glory.

America Chosen of God Rev. Hartley pointed out that the

rights and liberty of American citizenship as set forth in the Declaration of Independence will not stand

to be encroached upon.

America, said the pastor, "is,

chosen of God for the world's Chris

tian civilization, to give the world the ideal of the Man of Galilee. Our responsibilities are great and the possibilities of our future quicken us in devotion to righteousness and truth." In speaking of our schools Rev. Hartley placed special emphasis upon the responsibilities of every American citizen to be more sacred and binding than ever before. He highly commended the movement in behalf of better education for our boys and girls, real citizenship, straight Americanism, with the Bible first in every public school. Special Masic Rendered During the evening special music,

appropriate to the service, was ren

dered. Armond Akers. local vocal soloist, sang "Your Flag and My Flag," in a beautiful and impressive manner. A special number "The Bright Fiery Cross," was given bythe choir. W. B. Sharp, superintendent of the Sunday school, paid special tribute in a few well-chosen words to a beautiful, large floral "fiery cross" which held a conspicuous place during services. At the close of the address this beautiful floral "fiery cross" was presented to Rev. and Mrs. B. A. Hartley.

standing a revival service was in

progress at the M. E. Church, the Baptist church people had a meeting

and the Scenic had more than a

usual Wednesday evening turnout, the court room was packed to its

capacity, the aisles being full of

chairs and all standing room was taken by the crowd anxious to hear the speaker on the aims and objects of the Ku Klux Klan. The speaker, who says he is a M. E. preacher, was not introduced, there was no chairman of the meeting, and if there was an emperor or cyclops of the local

Klan, he did not make himself

known. The speaker did not tell his name, and we have not found any

one who does know his name. He

spoke more than two and a half hours, and received the very closest

attention. "Should Tote for Man"

He stressed the necessity of vot

ing, and voting for MEN. not parties

He also explained about the

"hooded" members, so much talked

of in the newspapers, and insisted that the Klan members did not wear

their robes, except on two occasions.

one, when going through the ritualis

tic work of initiating members, or when parading on the streets iin public, inferentially, at least, making a denial that they wore their hoods and robes as has been charged against them, when trying to enforce the laws. Scott County Journal.

Bedford, Ind., May 7. Xo answer had today come from the publishers of the Bedford Daily Mail as to why it persistently refuses advertisements from an organization which, In th proffered ads states

that its principles are as follows:

Law and order, white supremacy, the tenets of the Christian religion, free speech, free press, liberty and the

uphoUto t thaHjtitu.tioa of the United &tta. Tbla mbm newspaper, while refosfsg the ad mentioned, slaps every Froteataat reader in the fae by carrying an advertisement, part of which states that "No other church in the world can show the divine credentials which the Catholic church presents." A Sinister Influence It can only be believed thai a sinister influence could cause tha publishers to openly insult the many Protestant churchgoers in this city by carrying an advertisement that tells them their churches can not produce evidence that Christ is their leader. However, this one instance is only further proof that a sinister influence exists in this country that Is strong enough to force the vast majority of the newspapers to do its

j bidding.

Plymouth, Ind., May 2 Sheriff Earl Bennett and Deputy Bogardus entered upon the premises of George Osborne, a farmer, living near Burr Oak, found a fully equipped moonshining outfit, mash and home-dis

tilled liquor. Complaint had been registered with the officers by citizens, who assisted the sheriff and his deputy in the search. Osborne was taken into custody and required to file a bond of $1,000 for his appearance in the Marshall county circuit court.

Chicago, May 5. Declaring that he felt too strongly against the Ku Klux Klan, Judge Joseph B. David, recognized as active against that organization, has declined to try the case in which William Wrigley, Jr., has brought suit for $50,000

against the Unity Publishing Com

pany, publishers of "Tolerance, an anti-Klan weekly newspaper. The case has been stricken from the jurist's calendar and returned to Judge Hugo Pam for reassignment. Is Prejudiced Judge David stated that he did not know why the case was set before him and that he did not intend to leave it on his calendar. "L feel too strongly against the Ku Klux Klan," Judge David is reported to have said,

"to feel competent to judge impartially in a case which concerns it."

Wrigley's suit is based on the publication by Tolerance of Wrigley's alleged petition for membership in the Ku Klux Klan, which was declared a forgery by handwriting experts during litigation in the circuit court over ownership of the paper.
