The Roman Catholic church, which has always denounced the public schools of America as "hotbeds of vice and nurseries of hell," making it a sin for parents of this faith to send their children to these schools, are now in control of our history books. These history books, dealing with medieval Europe, contain the Roman Catholic viewpoint throughout, and are used as a means by which the

doctrine of the Roman Catholic church can be injected into the minds of American children. The

dea that the Roman Catholic church

shall continue to act as censor over

the history books used in the public

schools of this great nation, and will not permit the exact truth regarding

the history of medieval Europe to be

taught to the children of America is a condition which the people of Indiana will not longer tolerate. A storm of protest against this form cf

religious teaching through the history books of our public schools has been received by this paper in the form of letters and petitions demand

Clay City, Ind., May 5. This little city was given a thrill last Thursday night, when about 100 Klansmen marched through the principal

streets. Hundreds, having a tip that something was going to transpire,

had gathered along the street to wit

ness whatever was to take place. A half hour later three fiery crosses blazed on the hilltop south of the town. Heavy dynamite charges attracted the attention of many living miles away. It is estimated that near a thousand Klansmen attended the ceremony on the hill top.

Pope Gregory VII The text reads, 'Gregory's reply to Henry, and the German bishops was speedy and decisive, 'Incline thine ear to us, oh, Peter, chief of the apostles! As Thy representative, and by Thy favor, has the power been granted especially to me by God, of binding and loosing in Heaven and earth, I withdraw through Thy power

and authority, from Henry the King, who has risen against Thy church, with unheard of insolence, the rule over the whole kingdom of the Germans and over Italy. I absolve all Christians from the bonds of the oath which they have sworn or may sweatto him, and I forbid anyone to serve him as King' Henry was so discouraged that he hastened across the Alps in midwinter whither the Pope had come on his way to Germanv. For three days the Ger

man King presented himself before the closed door, barefoot and in

coarse garments of a pilgrim and penitent before the Pope consented to receive him. THE SPECTACLE OF THIS MIGHTY PRIN'CE OF DISTINGUISHED APPEAR A N C E, IN TEARS BEFORE THE LITTLE MAN WHO HUMBLY STYLED HIMSELF 'THE SERVANT OF THE SERVANTS OF GOD.' HAS ALW A Y S BEEN REGARDED AS MOST COMPLETELY TYPIFYING THE POWER OF THE CHURCH AND THE POTENCY OF HER CURSES AGAINST EVEN THE MOST E X A L T E I) O F THE ; EARTH.' " On page :192 of the same

book, is set forth the teachings of

the power of the Pope, which is con

tained in what is known as "THE DICTATUS" of this same Gregory VII, who today is regarded by all Roman Catholics as authority on the teachings of the Roman Catholic

Church. "The Pope enjoys a unique title; he'is the only universal Bishop, and may depose and reinstate other Bishops or transfer them from place

to place. No council ot the church may be regarded as speaking for Christendom without his consent. THE ROMAN CHURCH NEVER HAS ERRED. NOR WILL IT ERR TO ALL ETERNITY."

He further, says, "The Pope is the only person whose feet are kissed by all princes, that he may depose emperors, and ABSOLVE SUBJECTS FROM ALLEGIANCE TO AN UNJUST RULER. NO ONE MAY ANNUL A DECREE OF THE POPE, THOUGH THE POPE MAY DE-

! CLARE NULL AND VOID THE DEi CREES OF A L L EARTH L Y

POWERS. AND NO ONE MAY PASS JUDGMENT UPON HIS ACTS."

Albany, N. Y. Gov. Al Smith has been appealed to in vain to aid the

fight for clean books in the state. A bill providing rigid censorship of obscene literature was passed by the Republican assembly, but when it came before the Tammany Hall controlled Senate, a stiff fight developed. The aid of Governor Smith was sought but he declined to help and the Senate defeated the measure, thus paving the way to continue the licentiotii. reading matter that is flooding the newsstands and bookstores.

YOUR BOOK DIET The mind needs growth-promoting elements, just like the body. And it finds them principally in books. Froth and foam, the literary cream puffs, make pleasant reading and relaxation. But they do not nourish.

Substantial food is needed the necessary amount of mental vitamines the books that build and strengthen and stimulate. Don't gulp dowii literature at random. Plan your intellectual diet carefully. Follow a well-balanced menu. Consult a dietitian.

THE FIERY CROSS AMERICA'S FASTEST GROWING WEEKLY

'ot So 'Regarded Protestant Americans do not regard Pone Gregory VII as a "hum

ble little servant of God," nor his life and teachings as having anything whatever to do with the simple and sublime teachings of Christ Jesus, as taught in the Holy Bible, nor do they intend that the books of our great American public schools shall

be henceforth used as a means through which Roman Catholic ideals shall be held up before the minds of American children, and the superstitous and degrading fear of the po

tency and power of the curses of the RoniHii church be implanted into the consciousness of those young people who are being reared under the STARS AND STRIPES. The free public school of America is exactly the jdace where all children should

be educated in the principles of true Americanism, which above all else, holds aloft the ideals of LIBERTY, EQUALITY OF ALL MEN, AND THE FREE AND UNRESTRICTED RIGHT OF EACH INDIVIDUAL, UNFETTERED BY ALL MENTAL

AND POLITICAL TYRANNY, TO

WORSHIP GOD ACCORDING TO THE DICTATES OF HIS OWN CONSCIENCE. . It might be well for 100 per cent American people , to become acquainted with the teachings of the infallibility of the Pope and the Roman Catholic church as set forth

The Miracles of the Saints On page 30S is to be found the following: "The divine power of the church was furthermore established

in the eyes of the people by the wonderful works which Christian. (Roman Catholic) saints were constantly performing. They healed the sick, made the blind to see, and the lame to walk. They called down God's wrath upon those who opposed the

church, and invoked terrible punishments upon those who treated her holy rites with contempt. To the

reader of today the frequency of these miracles narrated by the me

dieval writers seems astonishing. The lives of the medieval saints, of which hundreds and hundreds have been preserved, contain little else than accounts cf them, and no one

appears to have doubted their everyday occurrence." Do Not Accept Teachings Protestant Americans do not accept these miracles of the saints of the Medieval Roman Catholic church and do not wish them taught in our

school books. On the contrary those' Protestants who have given the matter careful study agree that the art of Christian healing as taught and practiced by Christ Jesus and his

apostles and as was common during the first three centuries following began to wane after the adoption of Christianity as the state religion, by

the Roman Emperor, Constantine. In

place of these "works" which were the fruits of their purified lives, and their spiritual understanding of the Master's teachings and example were substituted the ceremonies and rites, the pomp and splendor, the feast days and superstitions of Roman paganism.

New Philadelphia, O., May 5. What

is the meaning? This is the question that is on the lips of every citizen

following the burning of the third

Fiery Cross within the city limits of this Fair village during the last

week. The tension is all the more severe inasmuch as the burning cross followed close in the wake of investigation and indictments of the city police by the state prohibition department. The city is all aroused

over the developments of the last forty-eight hours concerning the alleged misconduct of the department

and the laxness of the authorities in the enforcement of the laws. Following the report of the state prohibition commissioner, Governor Donahey ordered Mayor E. N. Fair of this city to make a clean sweep of his police department or subject himself to suspension from office and

suffer trial for failure to enforce the prohibition laws. The only charges

that were filed against the mayor were failure to enforce the laws, while against several of the police department charges of alleged drunkenness while on duty, immoral conduct and laxity in the enforcement of the prohibition laws. In the investigation Chief of Police Espich

escaped implication and no charges 1

were filed against him. Klan Helped in Cleanup The common street talk is that the Klan has had something to do with the coming cleanup, at any rate the police are shaking in their boots and

are grabbing at every straw which they think that perhaps would be a life saver. Today the Dover Reporter carries a story that two of the

force who are implicated are suing the New Philadelphia Daily Times for $100,000 for alleged libelous accounts in their issue of May 3. As a further result of the start that has been made it is alleged that the burning of the fiery cross on the lawn of the public library indicates that there is going to be a cleanup of the vice conditions that exist in

Dover and that the thrifty bootlegging that has been going on in Tuscarawas county is to have some wellorganized opposition. It Is implied that the clean-out of the Phillie police force is an act to get men dependable upon the force in the furtherance of the campaign.

several hundred persons who viewed

it before the arival of the firemen.

This was followed by another

city, and any doubt as to the existence of a strong organization of the -Knights of the Ku Klux Klan here

has been completely wiped out by these activities within the last few days.

The Klan has recently been the

means of bringing to light the location of two stills In this county, one of which was in Dead Man's
