FT. WAYNE, WITH POLICE IN ACTION, LOOKS TO COURTS AND HIGHER-UPS Police Efforts to Clean Up City Avail Little While Courts Suspend Sentences and Protected Haunts and Dives Go Untouched
PROGRAM FOR M UNGO VAN'S SUCCESSOR
(By Staff Correspondent) Fort Wayne, Ind., April 25. A campaign for a city-wide clean-up has been launched, and already some very good results have been obtained. A reorganized police department, with William Moehler as chief, has ploughed some deep furrows through the booze marsh, thrown no little fear into the denizens of the underworld, have made the landladies of the cheap rooming houses "moro careful," and have abated open gam
bling. The chief has run some of the bootleggers ragged and has succeeded in putting a few of the "soft drink" parlors out of business. Ho has encroached upon the sanctums of the perfumed parlors and has bought
who are known to be in accord with
the Incumbent and who will, upon a
finding of guilty, place the defendant
behind the bars if the offense car
ries a jail sentence. Payments of f 10 for every docket entry, for every continuance granted, should not be tolerated. The $10 covers the entire
trial of the case and attorneys In search of "easy money" will not be
so anxious for the job
Arguing with defendants and fights between counsel and prosecutor wastes time and turns the court into
a schoolroom. A man doing wrong
smirks at this show of contempt and
as the prisoner before the bar, he
doesn't have to be told about It. A good police court "judge knocks 'em
down under the hammer, and, fur
thermore, ha3 confidence in himself.

BANKRUPTCY FILED FOR TOLERANCE
(Continued from Page 1, Column 3) s.try to .fight flra with fire, the Fiery Cross had determined on the policy that if the American Unity League

It has done as good If not better than the average police departments in other cities, and very well, indeed, with the backing given It by the present administration. People Want Change Inasmuch as Moehler's police department is hedged by a long-toler
ant public conscience and the city is filled with ward politicians and "shyster" lawyers, the censure forthcoming with the community's change of heart and a demand for a cleaner city in which to bring up their boys and girls, Is not deservlngly theirs. So turn your eyes to Mayor Hosey, and Prosecutor Frank M. Hogan. As long as the mayor's brother-in-law is in the "saloon" business; as long as the prosecutor passes up 100 places against which he could file and obtain injunctions and closing orders, and as long as the county prosecutor shifts the responsibility of his office upon the police and the courts, makes no spirited fight against the choice of special judges and does not demand maximum sentences . upon flagrant violators, Fort Wayne will continue to rust. This docs not mean that graft ;
judge who hears the case before a jury. A defendant guilty does not mean a minimum sentence neces
sarily, and the court that reduces penalties as a habit will find himself liable to censure. Suspended sentences are jokers and not many are required to influence the electorate. The police may make arrests, bring offenders into courts, but their hands are tied when the defendants are allowed to go free by forfeiting bonds. They may raid a "booze" joint, get the evidence aplenty, but they can not dry up the marsh when
the courts listen to the soft-purring pleadings of a police court lawyer.

Mr. Claude Barker, 1149 E. Tenth St., City. Dear Friend: Impelled by the spirit of true, loyal friendship, which has functioned down through the years, I entreat you to heed some sincere advice which is expressed solely for the best interests and welfare of you and yours. I, as well as others, are fully conversant of your financial straits, and of your commercial struggle, as well
as your affiliation with an organization which is selfishly oppressing the
better and majority element of your
locality, and upon whose patronage your business has thrived.
By associating yourself with this
decidedly un-American organization you have betrayed the people to
whom you owe the deepest respect and gratitude for your very existence, and quite naturally they have resented It. Without their support
you can not survive, and the past
few months have surely made you re
alize this fact. Calmly thinking, do you deserve these people's patron
age? Do you even deserve their re
spect? Are you not biting the hands
that have fed you 7 can your ntue ad In your Intolerant weekly in any
way recompense you for the loss I the support of the vital factors of
your immediate neighborhood? Com

press you that your store la not of sufficient magnitude to draw from other localities. Your smile and assurance that business is good, fools
no one. It Is only a mask covering the real truth, the same as the regalia of the organization to which you are attached, covers their heinous crimes. I am satisfied you were tempted into this despicable band, as others have been, through absurd misrepresentation originating in distorted brains, to the effect that your coun
try was on the verge of an appalling
calamity. In the quite recent con
flict, when the country was in dan
ger, did not the Catholic, the Pro
testant, the Jew and the Negro, re
spond? Every sect and creed did
their little all. They were of one
mind, solely and unalterably for our
country. Your country and mine.
Will not common sense and reason convince you that It is utter rot to
think that the Catholic, the Jew or the Negro, are seeking to destroy
Auburn, Ind., April 24. The Rev. Dr. Blair, in a speech in the as

from his inside coat pocket, placed
it on the stand before him and placed
upon the flag a small Bible, opened
at the 12th chapter of Romans. "This
ceremony is observed at the opening
of every meeting of the organiza
tion," said the speaker.
The assembly room was crowded, every seat and every bit of available standing room was taken. At 8
o'clock two men appeared on the plat
form. One of these men represented
himself to be a representative of The
Fiery Cross, the klan paper. He then Introduced the speaker, the Rev. Dr. Blair, pastor of the third
largest church in Indiana.
The speaker said: "1 have been in your city for two days. I have visited your stores and mingled
with your citizens. I find that
Auburn is prosperous in all ways.
Above all. Auburn is possessed of a community spirit which is most rare I congratulate you." A short his
tory and purposes of the organiza
tion was given by the speaker.
Speaking of the violation of the
Volstead act, the speaker said, "We've got the names of some of the
oootieggers or Dekalb county on
our records at Indianapolis, and
don't forget that. WTe furnish the
evidence to the law enforcement of
ficers and if some of the fellows in this county keep on selling liquor we will prove that we know what we are talking about." The meeting
closed with a prayer by the speaker.

FIGHTING PARSON
AT CAMBRIDGE
Cambridge. Ohio, April 23. The
second of a series of open meetings
was held here last evening with a very large attendance of patriotic
Americans.
The Fighting Parson was present
and delivered a very interesting talk on the subject, "Why the Ku Klux
Klan is a Great American Institution," which was sincerely com
mended by everyone present. The true value of the Klan was fully explained in the pleasing manner
known only to great orators.
Following the lecture, fifty men were invested with the sacred rights
of citizenship In the Invisible Em

made concerning the local organiza

end with patriotic songs and pro-l

Dear Claude, use a little common
horse sense. Give the matter a little
calm analysis, unaffected by the dis
torted propaganda of the sheet in
which you advertise. The biggest, best and most influential Protestant men of the country, as you know, are
bitterly opposed to this absurd, unAmerican organization, originated solely for personal gain. It Is not uncommon for men to make mistakes, and it Is truly a virtue to acknowledge one, and surely your loss of patronage and respect,
will convince you of your mistake

The path is open to be free from

of that dastardly organization, which
is attempting to throttle the very vl

you oppress, stand in unswerving allegiance to their friends. Your opportunity is this. Immediately and publicly, renounce your affiliation with this cowardly, un

Your reward will be an immediate restoration of patronage, together

false pretenses last week, and who
was given a six months' county jail

notice of appeal.
Meland was Indicted by the Allen

Josephine Knapp on the pretense
that he would file an appeal bond in her divorce proceedings, which she
wished to earry to the supreme court, and that he sold the note and spent the money. Meland claimed
that the money was applied to at

while on the stand, Meland ad
mitted the paternity of a child of Miss Edith Helbig, of this city. Miss
Helbig took the stand In the attor

months old. She explained to the
court she was engaged to marry the attorney but said the marriage was
postponed after he was indicted by
the grand jury. She insisted that the accused and herself were still
on friendly terms.

at the head or Mam street, was held the first outdoor initiation of the
Knights of the Ku Klux Klan of
Muskegon and Perry counties.
Several hundred Kiansmen from Zanesville, Crooksville, and other
vicinities came via automobiles and
the Southern Ohio railway to RosS
ville for the initiation. Candidates
from Crooksville, New Concordia,
Norwich and Rossville were the sub
jects for naturalization, and they listened to a remarkable address on Americanization by a speaker from
the national bureau. ' Not only was the meeting an inspiring one, In which enthusiasm was at a high pitch, bnt It was also anxiously and interestedly watched from nearby hills by natives and resident of the community. It i understood that a large body of Kiansmen from this and nearby communities will attend a large naturalization meeting at Newark, Ohio, Saturday.

If you were selecting an ideal salesman, you would select one who has the confidence of the people. One who is conscientious, one who is honest, sincere and able to arouse the inspiration to buy. One who calls on more people able and willing to buy your product than any other salesman. One who has the dignity to reflect the integrity of the merchandise he sells. One who sells for you at a profit, because his costs are consistent
with the results.
