Washington, D. C, March 26. The official Catholic Room for Governor,

Al Smith of New York for President

has been launched in New York city,

according to a dispatch to the Fellow

ship Forum of this city. The announcement of the Roman

Catholic church's intention to seek the Democratic nomination and subsequent election of Al Smith, a member of the church, was made byJVIsr. Francis C Kelley, president of the Catholic Church Extension Society in a lecture before the Catholic Club of New JCirk city. Mgr. Kelley quoted as his authority "a high church official in Washington." He declared that this "high authority'' save him the tip that tli'e

hierarchy -was ready to throw its full weight behind the aspirations of Gov. Smith. Denials have been many that the church had any intention of taking part in elections of the country as a church, but intenrtedlo leave to each individual the choice of whom he.

would support. This announced proposal to throw the church's support behind a loyal son of the church is a bold gesture and is an indication of the strength which the church possesses, or thinks it possesses. As a matter of fact, the church would be

overwhelmed in an election if the support of the non-Catholics would be thrown to a non-Catholic candidate. The backers of Al Smith feel that the "solid South" would si ill remain solid regardless of 1 In- candidate upon the Democratic ticket. They feel that (ho anti-Republican sentiment is so strong in the Soul It that a southern Protestant would support, a Catholic on their own ticket in preference to

voting for a Republican.

They believe that they can carry New York State with its 43 electoral votes; that they could carry Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey and possibly Ohio. If they could hold the South and carry many of these States, they are almost certain of victory. There is a precedent established as far back as history goes that an internal family quarrel is forgotten when the family is attacked from the outside and old differences are laid aside in the repulsing of the antagonist. The Catholic supporters of Gov.

Smith, must repose - little or jio, .faith., in this precedent, or feel that in this

case that their united support will not

De considered, that' of an outside antagonist; Should the church prove successful in winning the nomination for Smith, which is a- matter of considerable doubt, it is-felt here that the followers of the church. of Rome will learn that the breach between the North and South has been so well-healed that the - two, will get together and swamp the church's candidate. Mgr. Kelley. in his - address, said that in his conversation with the "high : church official" he expressed

considerable doubt of the ability of

tne church to elect a catholic to which

the "high official" replied. "Well, let's nominate him and get that question over with." The -veil has been drawn back and the purpose of the church has been exposed. It is up to loyal Protestant Americans to get busy and fight back.

The Democrats face a fight to bar Smith from the nomination, and, losing, will find many of the party leaders urging support )f the Republican, providing he is a Protestant, which is a foregone conclusion.

tions the-membership of the Legion.

Murray, a crcjss-back and a representative of ' the "hidden power" in the fight upon the Klan, demanded that the "Invisible empire" be. made an issue. Whipped at his malicious enterprise, Murray added to the heat of the .-argument -by hulling vindictives at the klansmen present. Called by many of' his one-time supporters "a narrow-minded fool," he argued himself for an issue in the next election for local commander.
