when the people of Springfield have
an opportunity to fill the positions by exercising the ballot, that Protestants are chosen? Isn't it a fact that all the "key" positions city manager, chief of police, chief of the fire department, desk sergeant in the police department, chief of detectives, and all of the detectives but one, are adherents of the Catholic faith? In addition to this, isn't it a fact that superintendent of the water works and the city treasur er have Catholic affiliations? Isn't it a fact that the inspector of plumbing and sanitation, and water works inspector are Catholic? So, after all, we believe that the spirit and substance of the statement appearing in The Fiery Cross is essentially correct. What is amazing to us is that a city commission consisting entirely of Protestants would select Win. II. Mahoney as city manager, who in turn would fill all "key" positions with the same type and same religious adherents. The statement made by Rev. Woodward and included in Mayor Furry's exception, that "Eighty-five per cent, of offices are held by Roman Catholics" is not applied to Springfield, and was not so intended and was never so orally presented. It was taken from the United States government statistics and referred to the United States as a whole, and referred to important political positions, namely, administrative and executive, and an attempt to pervert his remarks to fit the city of Springfield and print a denial is in keeping with a lot of the publicity that has been given the entire Courtner proceedings at Springfield. CALL THE COPS!
HERE IS A RIOTOUS CONSPIRACY HELEN NEEDS HELP. (Special to Fiery Cross) Baltimore, Md, March 13. Epithets, threats and stink bombs hurled into the First Baptist church of Brooklyn, a suburb of Baltimore, by an angry mob of Catholic sympathizers failed to deter Mrs. Helen Jackson,,a former nun and garbed in the attire of a nun, from telling the crowd that filled the church to overflowing of her life in a. Good Shepherd convent, where she was foi-cibly detained, accordine to her storv. The mob gathered early and sought to intimidate those seeking entry into the church. Literature attacking Mrs. Jackson's character and offering rewards for proof of the truth of her statements were made, but nevertheless the meeting started. Un interrupted by the hoots and jeers of the hoodlums outside the church, the pastor of the church and others went on with their speeches until finally with a tinkline-taf e:lass. little vials of foul-smelling liquid were thrown through the windows and burst upon the floor. As the choking, disagreeable odor rose, those in the church covered their mouths with handker chiefs and stuck it out. The meeting was carried through until the entire program was completed, after which, with the aid of police reserves, those taking part in the meeting started to leave. It was found, however, that the tires of Rev. Mr. Fox's auto had all been slashed and it was necessary because of the threatening attitude of ' the mob . to retire to the church until they were replaced. This mob of Romanist sympathizers carried on about the type of disorder that might have been expected near the seat of Romanism in this country. The secular press did jnot carry this story, but had there been any chance to hang it on the j Klan it would have been spread wide, no doubt. Such outrageous attacks on a church edifice and a peaceful meeting of Protestants seems the essence of bigotry upon the part of I those who howl loudest against it wnen the slightest opportunity affords. MAINE STARTS FIGHT (Continued from Page 1.) Support of Portland Mayor Questioned by the bishop as to whether Bates College received state funds, Senator Brewster said that it did not; also, that Bates, in order to take advantage of an endowment, had given up its denominational character. "It has given up its Christian character," said the bishop. Senator Brewster said that he resented any assertion that the colleges of MaineSSiad a lack of Christion character. - (Continued on Page 3.) FT. WAYNE HEARS POWERFUL ADDRESS REV. OVERMEYER TAKES RAP AT VICE SITUATION SAYS IT IS AS RAMPANT AS IN DAYS OF JAIL "FLATS." Ft. "Wayne, Ind., March 13. Rev. Overmeyer of the Calvary U. B. church of Ft. Wayne delivered a powerful sermon, Sunday, on "One Hundred Per Cent. Americanism." He pointed out that 100 per cent. Americanism, as exemplified by the KuKlux Klan stands for the sanctity of courts and justice and demands law enforcement, including the enforcement of the 18th amendment, lie declared that he neither condemned nor commended the organization, but emphasized that it makes for patriotism as a principle. He touched -on the vice situation and claims that vice is as rampant in Ft. Wayne as it was in the days of the notorious jail"flats" when Chief of Police O'Rourke convicted. Chief of Police Een Elliott and Ben Wartell and forced the closing of those notorious dives in two days. FLAMES AT NIGHT STARTLEUIPPUS WHISPERS OF MEETINGS AND WILD ENTERPRISES CROS.S OF IRON PIPE ONLY EVIDENCE. fcippus, Ind. Residents o Warren township were startled Wednesday night by the appearance of hugh flames above Bippus, about 8 o'clock and lasting for one hour. Wires were kept hot with inquiries about the big fire. In the morning visitors from out of town were startled again, this time at the discovery that Bippus was still standing, quiet and unharmed. The full story of the fire is not yet known; there is only one witness, a silent one. In a vacant lot in the mam part of town between, the black smith, shop and the Brie depot, opposite John. Altman's grocery, a cross, 20 feet high 'and eight feet wide, made of two-inch iron- pipe, indicates the origin of the flatnei There are whispers in the town of meetings and wild enterprises, but with the exception of the cross there is no evidence to substantiate th rumors. OHIO TOWN HEARS KUN TALK
McCRAY'S HALL IS FILLED TO ITS FULL CAPACITY. College Corner, Ohio The largest crowd that ever assembled in and about McCrays hall was present Thursday night at the open meeting of the Ku Klux Klan. The meeting had been thoroughly advertised in the News, and by posters, and the night before by the burning of the fiery cross in the field of E. N. Carmichael. Some of those who could not get in the hall stood in the hallway and on the stairs, others crawled up on the fire escape and on ladders to the windows fir their eagerness to hear what the speakers had to say While the audience was assembling and waiting they were entertained by good music furnished by the men's orchestra. Many klansmeh were present from nearby towns and the surrounding community. However the more interested in the audience were those who wanted to hear and learn what they could about the klan, that, has been both praised and accused of many things in the public press and by word of mouth. CLARKE QUITS FOR THE "GOOD OF THE ORDER" FUNDS TO BE USED FOR AMERI CANIZATION WORK. (Special to Fiery Cross) Atlanta, Ga., March 12. The absolute severance of Edward Young Clarke from any official post in the Ku Klux , Klan and the taking over of the propagation work of the Klan by Imperial headquarters has been announced by Imperial Wizard H. W. Evans for "the good of the order." At the November Klonvercation announcement was made that the propagation work would be given up by Clarke within a reasonable time and the time has been reached in the opinion of the Imperial Wizard when his holdinsr of the office Imnerial Giant had passed its usefulness to the work and upbuilding of the Klan. The Imperial Wizard's statement said in part: "The propagation work has been absorbed by Imperial headquarters, and nowr. is being' conducted from the Imperial Palace, under my sole jurisdiction and control as administrative and executive head of the order. "Not only has Mr. Clarke ceased to be an official of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, but it is also true that he no longer derives one cent of revenue from the order. Money derived from this propagation phase of our activities now is being turned back into the extension work of the order to its immeasurable benefit. "I cancelled the contract under which Mr. Clarke was working for the good of the order. There was a clause in this contract which provided that it could be terminated hv either party thereto at any time. "With all the funds derived from extension work now available for broadening the bounds of the Invisible Empire and for the upbuilding of real Americanism throughout the nation, The Knights of the Ku Klux Klan is assured of a growth even more vigorous and amazing than that which has characterized its progress in the past." . Eighty-Five Per Cent of Clergy Belong to Klan Want Papers to be Fair. St. Louis, Mo., March 12 The Klan is much stronger here in St. Louis and throughout the nation than most people realize, and it .is spreading like a prairie fire at harvest time. If the present weekly increase continues the organization here will number around 50,000 by Christmas. The best citizenship of our city is included in its ranks. Persecution, misrepresentation and unfairness by the press has strengthened our hands, for it has given us fearless, Godfearing men, men who put principle above policy, men who are willing to make any sacrifice for a cause they know to be right. But the time comes when patience ceases to be a virtue, and we are determined to set our cause squarely before the public. Just a 50-50 break in the news from one paper in St. Louis is all we ask, and if we cannot get it, we will pub' Ush our own paper, and are assured of at least 50,000 subscribers to begin with. This is not a club held over your head to get a little more news trcm our side into your much esteemed paper, for I assure you that I am not one who sits in the bleach ers and boosts how I could run the team. I realize the many handicaps the press is facing in this issue. And thus does competition make cowards of us all. Eighty-five per cent of our ministers belong to the Klan. Almost everywhere, except in St. Louis, they have openly and fearlessly proclaimed the principles for which the order stands. The time has arrived for us to do the same here. Sunday night a prominent West End pastor will preach on the principles of the Ku Klux Klan. Automobile Glass In-tailed While You Walt THE CLASS SHOP Blake and W. Michigan at.
