REGRETTABLE MESS DOUBLE CROSSED ON A "GENTLEMEN'S" AFFAIR. St. Paul, Mlnn.Revelation of how the Knights of Columbus "work" their way into Masonic -affairs is given in an article appearing in the current issue of the Crescent, national" organ of the Shrine, published here. Considerable adverse comment has attached to the Shrine of late because of this seeming familiarity with the avowed enemies of Masonry. Article in Crescent The article jn the Crescent follows"Right now we don't care whether Osman temple holds another ceremonial this-year br not for we have received the full invoice of laughter for 1923 from the reading of the following telegram: '"Osman temple of the Mystic Shrine of St. Paul, a Masonic organization, extended an invitation o the members of St. Paul Council No 39J Knights of Columbus, Catholic organization to attend a. circus being staged this week by Shriners. The Knights of Columbus attended the Shrine circus Wednesday evening in a body and brought their band along. Members of the two lodges said the friendly invitation and its acceptances resulted from a desire on both sides "to lay low Ku Klux Klan propaganda in St. Paul," which, they clataied, had sought to create bad feeling between tSe lodges. The Shrine temple here adjoins the K. of C. club house and both organizations have big memberships." "The facts are that the Knights of Columbus, in common with all other organizations in St. Paul, were invited to patronize the Shrine circus. At their request the Caseys were allowed to bring their band. That is all there was, or is, to the incident. The Knights were treated with courtesy and were given a show that returned full value for their money. Make Political Capital ' "It is to be deplored that the Caseys can not even participate in the social life of the city without attempting to make political capital out of it. "Osman temple has never concerned itself with the operations of the Klan. Stories such as that quoted are too ridiculous for any consideration except that it makes a man sore to know that puy intellects will resort to such petty mnods." Aids Law Enforcement at Gohimbus, Ind. Columbus, Ind. The strong arm of the Invisible Empire made itself felt here a few days ago, and as a t esult, the Indiana State Penal Farm at Putnamville has claimed another bootlegger. Recently a local man of doubtful character received a letter commanding him to immediately seek employment, or leave the city. Should he remain as a loafer in the city, he was promised a coating of tar and feathers by the writer of the letter, who signed a name he had no power to use, Columbus Ku Klux Klan. Learning of the incident, local Klansmen at once started an investigation to learn the author of the letter and turn him over to Federal officers. However, without waiting for the Klan investigation to bring results, the recipient of the threatening letter denounced the Invisible Empire in blazing terms, and turned the letter over to the local branch of the American Equality League. The next day he was arrested, charged with bootlegging after the police had been tipped off by a Klan investigator who had been shadowing the suspect. Today he is pounding rocks down at the Ville, the guest of the state. Having been caught with two quarts of the vile stuff in his pockets, there wasn't much chance for the American Equality League to aid him. Southern Indiana Sees Klan Edinburg, Ind. It is thought that one flf the largest closed meetings of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan ever held in this part erf southern Indiana, was held- in Columbus last week. Tile Columbus Klan entertained members of Klans from every Klan. city in this part of the state, at thfeir new home in the Bartholomew county city, it is understood. Forty members of the Franklin Klan passed through this city Monday nigTit, and it was said they were enroute to Columbus to attend a get-together meeting of all Klans of southeastern Indiana. It was said that a speaker would tell of Klan activities, and that the Columbus delegation to the recent state convention at Kokotno would deliver its report. A number of Edinburg Klansmen joined the Franklin string here onj the edge of the city, but due to the darkness, none of the local members were Recognized. The Johnson county delegation passed through here at an early hour Tuesday morning; on the return trip.
