ANOTHER TOWN. FINDS HAND AT SCHOOL THROAT INDIANA TOWN HAS ITS OWN "EYEWITNESS." No Need for Us to Write a Story When Alexandria Girl Does (By Alexandria Girl.) , Alexandria, Ind., Feb 26. Editor Fiery Cross: Dear Sir Would you be so kind as to print some news from our fair city? Your newsboy, who is also a boy scout, is doing fine here.- He is a hustler. Like Indianapolis, our school system is receiving some very hard knocks. Our high school has exactly one-half as many seats as pupils to occupy them. How can they study? Cramped bodies, cramped minds. Yet there is a movement on; it has already passed the council, to build a new, big community house, gymnasium and soldiers' memorial here. Put the city in debt and a new school building will be an impossibility during the next 20 years. The proposed architect is a Catholic. The chairman of the building committee is a Catholic woman. She is also president of Alexandria's Department Club. She is very interested in promoting our Parent-Teacher Association. Our schools have two community clubs and one Parent-Teacher Association working with them. They were so poorly equipped, the clubs bought play ground devices, pianos and other things, flags to be included in one instance. The Catholic school here has no such association connected with it and no play-ground equipment. Why the big interest in benefiting the public school with a gym to be controlled by American Legion? To benefit Catholics? Life isn't all athletics. Where does knowledge come? Last election we had a Catholic up for sheriff but he was defeated. The man who was elected is going to do something. He has already caught bootleggers with the goods on where our police had searched 15 times and not succeeded. We have a round dozen bootleggers probably with us yet. Also, like Gas City, we have a Rottenhouse drug store. It does a big business. Knocking on Protestants in general. In our high school the pupils are sitting two and sometimes three, in a seat. The school board had a furnace installed the buildings are all cut up and big zinc ventilators atop of them, rattling and jumping around which ever way the wind blows. The rooms- never have been heated right. But we can not afford a new building at this time. We must have a gym (?). Would you kindly tell me is there a state law to the effect that every school should have a flag? Our paper gave us the information that all homes and business houses should have Old Glory waving on FeB. 22. Schools were not mentioned. I am not a Klansman nor yet, perhaps, a Klansman's wife or sister, mother or sweetheart, more's the pity. But I'm for 100 per cent. Americanism every hour in the day. It has been justly said, The public school is the cradle of democracy." Very well, let's go, Alexandria Girl. FOREIGN COMMENT WE WOULD HARDLY EXPECT BRITISHER TO AGREE TO 100 Americanism. Frenzied sectarianism and religi ous bigotry were denounced as conducive to the already dangerous turmoil of the world by Dr. Arthur Walwyn Evans, Welsh orator and nephew of Lloyd George, at the Y. M. C. A. Big Meeting Sunday In English's Theater. Dr. Evans declared he could devote his physical and mental energies to better ends than to the persecution of a certain creed. As a Protestant, a Congregation alism and a Mason, I have too many better things to do," he said. Dr. Evans pictured the struggle GVeat Britain had faced throughout the centuries th rough her imperialism, told of the oppression of tenants bylords, but declared the nation had at last arisen from the domination of the rich and had made herself one of the greatest democracies of all times. P.Tinrlfla V HnnRPn nrp-nrnsf ft the Second. Presbyterian Church, and the church quarette provided music, beveral hundred women took advantage of the "Women's Day" program by attending. Reindeer's Skin Valuable. Not only is the reindeer prlxed highly for its flesh, but the skins are valuable for glove-making. Tanned with the hair on, they are very light, and robes made from the soft tanned skins with the hair on are for weight probably by far the warmest covering known. These nilght become extremely nseful as automobile robes for winter In colder parts of the country. WOMEN URGED TO SUPPORT INDIANA MOVEMENT. There has been so much talk about a women's organization that a declaration Is being published here for the information of all interested parties; that there Is but one women's organization In Indiana which will receive recognition through the columns of this paper or will receive recognition even of .moral support from the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan of Indiana. The Klan does not intend to see the Protestant women of the State pf Indiana split" up in a dozen different organizations, none of which would he strong and it certainly does not pro. pose to see some other organization brought in from another state and split the ranks of our forces so that all of them will be rendered impotent and helpless. There have been a few who have endeavored to do this and when they have failed to obtain the endorsement of the Klarf they have raised a great protestand have endeavored to ruin the Klan, therefore women are warned against impostors and colorful imitations of the one real organization which will be encouraged by this one newspaper and by the Klansmen.of Indiana who do not want to see the forces of the ladies' organization broken up. The only ladies' organization we expect to encourage at ah

nas an advertisement in this issue. Its P. O. Box number is 251, and that is the box number with which you should communicate if you be interested in an organization whiVh iaa pledged uncompromising fidelity and loyalty to the recognized authorities of the oreanization. Whirh lm or. tended its moral co-operation and support in buildinc un an orcani among the good women of Indiana and who siana ready to back them with further individual co-operation and moral support in all their requirements. Polynesians Mysterious Race. The area occupied by the Polynesian race in the Pacific is not less than 2,000,000 square miles. But the land surface within this area is relatively small and varies from New Zealand with its 100,000 square miles to little atolls barely large enough to resist the waves. The branches of the race are scattered from Hawaii in the north to New Zealand in the south, from the New Hebrides in the west to Easter island in the east, and their homogeneity Js a remarkable feature. Nobody who has studied their customs, their language and their legends can doubt that. they have a common origin. Whence came the Polynesians? Troubled by Minor Sins. Nathaniel Mather, in his diary, lamented his sinfulness, instancing as special evidence of his evil nature the fact that he once whittled on Sunday when he was young. "When very young, I went 'astray - from God," he wrote, "and mymind was altogether taken with vapltles and follies, such as the remembrance of them doth greatly abase my soul within me. Of the manifold sins which then I was guilty of none so sticks upon me as that being very youn I was whittling on the Sabbath day. And for fear of being seen I did it behind a door. A great reproach of God, a specimen of that atheism I brought into the world with me." Disillusioned. "And so your father refuses to consent to our engagement?" "He-does. Horace." The youth stifled a sob. "Is there nothing left for us, then, but an elopement?" "Nothing." The girl was fond, but firm. "Do you think, Gwendoline, that you could abandon this luxurious home, forget all the enjoyments of great wealth, banish yourself forever from your parents' hearts, and go out into the world with a . poor young man, to enter a home of life-long poverty and selfdenial T' "I could, Horace." The sad youth rose wearily, and reached for his hat. "Then," said he, "you are far from being the practical girl I have all along taken you to be." Fated to Be Bachelors. Probably no man of fame has gone to a bachelor grave withont one or more narrow escapes from Cupid's darts, however indifferently he may have professed to regard love, observes a London Tit-Bits writer. Even Alexander Pope, with all his grotesque deformity, was as vulnerable as any Adonis of his day. He lost his heart a dozen times to as many women, from - Martha Blount, his boyhood's sweetheart, to Lady Mary Wortley Montague, who referred to him on one occasion as "a great baboon." And it is said that one of his lady loves killed herself when her guardians sent her abroad to cure her of her Infatuation. Homer Wrote of Lotus Eaters. A race of people, known as the lotus enters,, mentioned in Homer's Odyssey as dwelling on the northeast coast of Africa, and visited by Ulysses in his wanderings after the fall of Troy, lived on the fruit of a plant called the lotus, the taste of which was so delightful as to cause utter forgetfulness of home on the part of those that partook of It In historic times the Greeks gave this name to a people that dwelt on the northern coast of Africa, between the Syrtes, and used as an article of food, a plant supposed to be identical with the lotus of Homer. flight f ; Ducks, The Americana says that: "All ducks are, vrystrongi ana swift on the wing, ami many of them make semiannual, migrations: between the tropics, an V!m:HimiSi. and tfielf iHnt Is-tn'owa to attain a ?VfH of 1&T tnTtes-'ftit' hour- f&f short distances la f lie cafe of certain species."

OF MR. COCO?

SAYS HE IS SURE KLAN WILL GET SQUARE DEAL. But He Looks Over the Jury Panel to See If It's All K.'of C. New Orleans, Feb. 26. A. V. Coco, attorney general of Louisiana, in a formal statement here today declared he welcomed the opportunity afforded the Ku Klux Klan to vindicate itself at the coming grand jury investigation into the activities of hooded bands in Morehouse parish. It was the first statement by Mr. Coco since his return from Bastrop, where he went early ;n the week to investigate the panel from which the grand jury is to be drawn on March 5. Wanted to Examine Jurors Before going to Bastrop the attorney, general had stated he desired to learn whether the parish jury commission had acted in accordance with ail provisions of the law in selecting the panel and to ascertain whether any of those named were related to persons implicated in floggings, deportations, or the kidnaping and slaying Of Watt Daniel and T. F. Richard. "I am pleased to - say conditions have greatly improved in the parish of Morehouse since the close of the open hearing conducted in that parish by the state," Mr. Coco said. "The officers appear to have taken charge anew and are in the saddle, and I have every assurance there shall be no recurrence of the disorder and lawlessness which existed in said parish previous to the hearing, a.s far as they will bo able to prevent it. Thinks Panel is Fair "From the best available information I believe the men selected as jurors are all good men and true, who are of good social standing, and occupy the different avenues of life, have considerable property interests in the parish, who have, as a rule, been lifelong citizens in the parish and reared large families, and who also settled and who have otherwise been identified with every public interest. ' They have the reputation of being law-abiding citizens and are for. the maintenance of social equilibrium. The general belief is that they will do their duty irrespective of Klan affiliation or influence." JUDGE TAKERS FAIR POSITION Houston, Tex., Feb. 26. Federal Judge J. C. Hutcheson, Jr., empaneling a new grand jury today, asked ot each member if he belongs to the Ku Klux Klan. Six men admitted membership. Judge Hutcheson said that so much had been said about the attitude of Klansmen that be thought it advisable that all might know the affiliations of the grand jurors. "You have shown yourselves qualified in law to serve as grand jurors in this court. Other disqualifications I have no power to declare," he said. UNION, O., SEES FIERY CROSS Union O., Feb. 27. That the Klan is organized here was evidenced by the burning of a Fiery Cross in this city Thursday night. There are said to be several hundred Klansmen in this county. The cross burned for several hours in a school yard in the north part of town. Performing Duty. Let us do our duty in our shop or In our kitchen, the market, rhe street, the office, the school, the home. Just as faithfully as if we stood in the front rank of some great battle, and we knew that victory for mankind depended upon our bravery, strength and skill. When we do that, the humblest of ail will be serving in that great army which achieves the welfare of the world. Theodore Porker. Nothing to Do bift Talk.
