SCUTH BESD PAPER :;
V IS DISCREDITED :- (Continued .from Page 1.) Klan was due largely to the activities of the Ren George W. Titus, a prominent Mishawaka clergyman. It is understood that during last week's session of the St. Joseph county grand jury in South Bend he was a witness. The grand jury returned one indict ment. "Officials of the Indiana Anti-Saloon League declare that they asked for the grand jury probe into the St. Joseph county situation as Mr. Titus had repeatedly given them informa tien upon stills and bootleggers." What an admission. At the time of the raid on Jan. 20 and at no subsequent time until this, did the South Bend Tribune make anv mention of Mr. Titus. This paper had carefullv guarded any reference to the "prominent Mishawaka preacher." But the common gossip on the streets that a list of names would be the "banner" story for Sunday, is stilled. Misguided believers bought the paper wondering if it could "come across;" curious to read what was promised. But the 'bluff" failed. It couldn't come across.
Thus can be traced back the connection the Tribune had with Tolerance and its activity in fostering the American Unity League. The Chicago publication, has been repudiated by its owners. Enough said. Even if the paper is rehabilitated and operated under new management, this debacle has branded it sufficiently. I can not again function efficiently. A Tolerance operator, named Campbell, is no more to be seen on the streets of this city. He can not be found lounging about the law offices of Barry Scanlon and Z. Dekelbaum, local officials of the American Unity
League. Campbell had floated the story that 'lost records" had been gleaned and upon which the chartered list of members of the Ku Klu Klan had been obtained. This list was to be published in Tolerance, the week after the Wrigley "expose." Campbell had insisted the Tribune and Tolerance were hand in hand. What Tolerance would ubc, the Tribune would add to to make complete tho report was circulated. But Tolerance is no more, at least so far as its former gullible readers will believe in the accuracy of any of its stories. So likewise tha Tribune, so far as it speaks of the K'i Klux Klan. Both publications are similarly labeled. "Perfidy" is the word used against the Tribune by hundreds who have stood by the paper and its editor for years. Will the Tribune straddle? Will it concede that its .propaganda is "good advertising" for the Ku Klux Klan, and will it, like hundreds of other newspapers preceding have already lone, now align itself among these "neutrals."
To Our Advertisers
Owing to the rapid growth of "THE FIERY CROSS" in the past few weeks it becomes absolutely necessary for us to increase our advertising rates. Our circulation last week was 75,000 copies. The new rates will be furnished on application.

; Baigersville was agog with intense ' excitement for an hour last night ! when a huge 30-foot fiery cross, the emblem of the Ku Klux Klari, em-
ville. The cross was placed in the commons at the southwest part of the town and was set fire at exactly ; 0 o'clock. Simultaneously with the firing of the cross a high-powered mo- ! tor car with a fire alarm whistle attachinent sounding its shrill warning I was driven through the streets of I Hargersville. Cries of "fire," "fire," were heard up and down the streets j and within a few minutes 300 people i had gathered near the commons to watch the cross burn, j The cross was -thirty feet high with
a l.i-toot cross arm. It apparently had been saturated with kerosene. It burned with a spectacular blaze.

Chicago, Feb. 10. Denouncing her tale of Ku Klu Klan kidnaping and torture as a fraud, henry Erick has obtained a warrant for the arrest of
his daughter, Mildred, 24, a church organist, on a disorderly charge. Miss Erick earlier in the day had reported to police that three hooded men abducted her, stripped her and carved six crosses in her flesh with a sharp knife. "I don't believe her story. I want the truth," Erick said. "That's why I'm having my daughter arrested." Detectives were sent to Erick's home to bring the girl, formerly a nurse, into police headquarters for questioning.
The fiction most in demand at the Central Library during the month of February includes "This Freedom," by Hutchinson; "The Cathedral," by Walpole; "Romance of a Million Dollars," by Dejeans; "Babbitt," by Lewis; "One of Ours," by Cather, and "Adrienne Toner," by Sedgwick. The most popular books of non-lie-tion during the month were "Mind in the Making," by Robinson; "Letters of Walter Page," Post's "Book of Etiquette," Wells's "Outline of History," 'Outwitting Our Nerves," by Jackson, and "The Story of Mankind," by Van Loon.

Silence gives consent, but there are
times when it is unwise to consent
Somehow a girl seldom thinks it worth her while ta trust a trustworthy young man. An old'Hiachelor is a man who has
never met the one woman he couldn't live without. If a man is Ignorant iie may learn, but if he tnows too much there is no hope for him. Speech is silver, silence is golden, giggling Is brazen and laughter Is apt to be ironical. Golden opportunities are the kind that fate hands to the other fellow on a silver platter. The honest grocer buys s(nd sells by the same scale. There are no two weighs about It. A man is usually embarrassed when he proposes .marriage to a woman either financially or otherwise.
