SOLD ON STREETS ALLEGED ORGAN OF KU KLUX KLAN MAKES INITIAL BOWSOLD BY COLUMBUS MAN. ORGANIZER IS WORKING IN LAPORTE. THOUGHT Laporte, Ind. Th3 Fiery Cross, alleged official organ for the Ku Klux Klan, made its initial appearance in LaPorte today when Charles Hodler of Columbus, Ind., who claimed to be agent for the paper, made the rounds ' of the downtown section. "I don't know anything about the j Klan except what is in the paper," he said when asked what the Klan 1 was doing in this vicinity. "I am not ( representing the Klan and I don't , know anything about it except what ! I read in the paper. Here, buy a pa- : per and read it for yourself," he told ; his inquirer. "I have the agency for three counS tics, Laporte, Lake and Prter. We ; had another man who was supposed I to cover Laporte county but I guess ! he was a little bit timid and didn't j sell any. I had a thousand copies and most of them are already gone." Thinks Klan is Here Asked whether a Klan was forming or had formed in Laporte he said he didn't know anything about it. "It's my impression that they're already here, though," he continued. i "I'm as much at sea regarding it as you are." He said he expected to sell Fiery Crosses in Laporte until he got in- ! structions from headquarters at Indianapolis to go somewhere else. ; "The paper itself isn't connected with the Ku Klux organization. It is ; just a Ku Klux sympathizer." I He said he worked on a salary basis ! and did not depend on sales of his ! paper to make a living. ! Organizer Here? ! For more than a week it has been ! rumored that an organizer for the Ku j Klux Klan had opened an office in 1 this city and that the organization was gaining a foothold in the city. The : alleged organizer was questioned by , a reporter from the Herald and denied any connection with the Klan. ! A number of persons, who are not eligible to join the Klaa because of religious fa,ith, have told members of ' the Herald staff that they positively , know that the Klan organizer is work- ' ing here. "Tolerance." the official organ of the American Unity League, is sold in this city each Sunday morning at the Kniehts-iii'iVilvmbus lodee rooms. The paper is opposed to the Klan and . w'U expose the name of members of j the Ku Klux Klan in this section o! the state, it is said. The paper is published in Chicago. Laporte Herald. The city attorney, a personal friend of Sullivan, who still believes that Sullivan should be given a trial, cither through gross ignorance or malicious neglect, failed to instruct the new chief that it was his duty to take an oath and file a bond. Spychalski, who had eagerly sworn in Sullivan, failed to swear in the new chief, but as' soon as this came to the knowledge of the city managerr he immediately called in the officers and compelled the clerk to give the oath and the officers to furnish bonds. KLAN HAS MEETING AT COLUMBIA CITY TEN MASKED KNIGHTS OF THE "INVISIBLE EMPIRE" STAND IN AISLES DURING SPEAKING. Columbia City, Ind. Ten members of the Ku Klux Klan wearing the flowing robes and ghostlike hoods of the "Invisible Empire" stood with folded arms in the aisles of the city hall auditorium like mute sentinels tonight while a public meeting of the Klan was in progress. The speaker who talked on the purposes and principles of the Klan was introduced as Rev. Mr. Blair, pastor of the third largest Protestant church of Indiana. The speaker wore the conventional dress of his profession, but he was introduced by a robed Klansman who removed his hood as he presented the minis' er. The pre Biding officer was a stranger to the Columbia City audience and it was believed that the others who appeared in regalia were also from out of the city. It was estimated that more than 1,000 people were in the audience. Much of the standing room was taken. The speaker refrained from sensationalism. He made no reference to the Mer Rouge affair, but challenged anyone to successfully impeach the motives of the Klan, which he said was an organization of American-born, white Gentiles, banded together for the nurnnsp nf nrnmnlin? thp advance of Christianity, Americanism and the law He declared that there are 273,000 Klansmen in TndfSttft' at the present time and that not a single member was afraid of being exposed. He said he had met 50 or 60 members of the state legislature who belong to the Klan. The meeting had been advertised for several days and had led to much discussion among the citizens of Columbia City as to the real purpose and intent of the organization. Many people attended the meeting out of curiosity, it was said. The fiery cross waa burned upon the sky here during the holidays, following an organization meeting of the Klan. No Truth In Charge of Favoring Mobocrac) The Pioneer, because of an editorial in its issue of last week touching upon the Ku Klux Klan, has been charged with favoring monocracy. This accusation is absolutely without foundation. The Pioneer has always advocated the strict enforcement of all laws, and if they are found to be impracticable, secure their repeal. The Pioneer is and alwavs has been opposed to the mob, but it has said time and again that lax or dilatory' enforcement encourages disrespect for law and breeds mobs. The claim in this country that the rich and influential are immune from the penalties of the law is not without provocation. Courts generally are honest and their intentions are good, but in the enforcement, of the laws against the rich they are greatly hampered by powerful influences which result in delays and finally, in too many instances permit the guilty to go free. A few years ago Judge Cavanaugh, a celebrated Chicago lawyer, in a lecture here, said that the enforcement of the law in the United States is hampered by technicalities which bring it into disrepute and contrasted the trial ol criminal cases in this country with the trial of similar cases in Europe, greatly to the detriment of the former. In this country the mob in many instances is an outgrowth of the lack of confidence of the people in the operation of the law, caused by dilatory tactics - practiced in the courts. Lebanon Pioneer. CONDEMN BARRING OF KLANSMEN FROM JURIES Chicago, 111. The action of Chief Justice McKinley of the Chicago criminal court in barring members of tSe Ku Klux Klan from juries was condemned by Methodist ministers of the city who, by a resolution, declared such action to be in the nature of class legislation and was "virtually depriving Klansmen of their rights of cttlzenahip' Exchange.
