Attica, Ind., Feb. 5. The Ku Klux Klan movement seems to be gaining in strength and influ
ence in many parts of the country. Recent developments point to the
presence of the organization in Foun
tain and adjoining counties. In some
9 j sections of the country the organizalltion is meeting with vigorous opposi-
H i tion, and in some of the larger cities
including New York, authorities have
attempted to stamp out the organiza-
tion by arresting any person known
j or suspected of being a member. This I probably is the result of the Klan'a
j opposition to any class or organiza
tion which holds allegiance to any other governments or takes orders
from any power not wholly American
The Klan is doing some commenda
ble things. It insists on law enforce-
ment, and if it can not bring about such enforcement through the officers and the courts, as a last resort it is said to take the enforcement of the law. into its own hands. Unlike all
other organizations the Klan makes its principles public, but veils the
identity of its membership in secrecy
The organization is in working order in Clinton county to the east of us, Tippecanoe county to the north and Vermilion county to the south, and it is reported that it has a good start in Fountain county. That the Klan stands for a higher type of citizenship and a rigid enforcement of the
law is evident from all the evidence available. Some things that have been done in the name of the Klan are not endorsed by the organization, it is said. Attica Ledger and Tribune.

ter clement. Possibly it would like to know that bootlegging, gambling, brothels, every form of organized and protected vice exist in this city.
i Others felt the Courier was fully informed and that pressure of no un certain and emphatic kind was being
brought to bear to force, if possible, the destruction of the Klan here. The lawless gentry wither and die when the Klan thrives and if political pres
sure and religious prejudice can be used to blindfold the editor of a daily newspaper into "washing their dirty linen" it seems the sure way out' of a dangerous situation that threatens an exposure that will amaze the State of Indiana. That an inspired crusade against the Klan in Evansville exists is a fact.
That somebody is behind it is a fact, and when the people of Evansville know that "somebody" a great light will shine. And in the meantime, what's the answer? Is the
Courier covering up with a smoke screen of attack or is it just plain ignorance? The concensus of opinion here is that If is a failure to see the facts and a lack of understanding of the Klan and its principles and a failure to look into the source of its antiKlan news and propaganda. The future will tell.

to ex-Chief of Detectives Wm. Cassidy Coughlin to run the office of prosecuting attorney or become 'special persecutor' of an American organization violating no laws and whose members are law abiding the Ku Klux Klan says 'NO!. . - ... "There is no organization, in the United States that is more intensely American thai is the Ku Klux Klan. It is composed solely of Americans; its history, its customs and its traditions are to be found in the annals of no country save America; its present
nurnose and its future mission are
i alike indissolubly connected with I American purposes and principles, j "The Knights of the Ku Klux Klan i can be denned as an organization of j native-born, white, Protestant Ameri
cans, banded together for the preserving, protecting and promulgating the principles of genuine Americanism. "Bootleggers, marauders, traffickers in vice and other like gentry do not thrive where the Klan exists, not because, as its enemies assert, they are run out of town by a committee of
robed and helmeted individuals, armed with tar-pots and bags of feathers, but rather because the American
element of the community, organized I and efficient, determines that lawbreaking shall cease. "The very thing that makes a man a Klansman his oath prevents him from remaining a Klansman if he violates the law or takes the law into his own hands. "The Ku Klux is as American as chewing gum. If the people of South Bend really knew the truth about the
Klan and the truth about the opposition they would be overwhelmed and amazed. "The Ku Klux Klan exacts the same right to organize and assemble as a class, as any other organization. "This organization is prepared to refute propaganda against it. Facts may be obtained by thoee who sincerely desire them and are entitled to them. "Advisory Committee,"
Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, Realm of South Bend." Interesting developments are prom

Private investigators are gathering
evidence to be placed before the federal grand jury and more than one
official will be involved. At least two

Recently, Klan secret service men, co-operating with Mishawaka officers, made three successful raids and Ragged one 300-gallon and two 50-gal-lon stills with 1,000 gallons of moonshine, Pebbleford labels, government seals and over 2,000 pounds of mash. All of which looks like an early spring.
citizen who is willing to work, regardless of color or creed, as is shown in

In paying his compliments to the
ladies the Rev. MacMahon grew very
eloquent declaring that in the beginning of the world, after God created man and saw him so desolate he
created woman, the most beautiful,
the most perfect and the greatest
creation God ever made, for man to cherish and protect and at no time ia the history of the world, do women need to be guarded more than at the present time, when morality seems to be at its lowest ebb, and the Ku Klux Klan member who will not protect the morals of his, and, if necessary, give his life's blood for "such protection is not fit to utter even the name of the organization. Taking hp the Jewish and the Catholics religion which automatical
ly bars members of either sect from this organization, he said that each had an organization of their own which barred members of the Protestant religion from belonging, and that
the Ku Klux Klan had been granted a charter from the United States government giving it the protection of
the law-making bodies of this country, but some members of these other organizations seemed to take offense at the idea of a strictly Protestant organization and had distributed literature
detrimental to the Ku Klux Klan. In saying that the Klan was anti-any-thing he assured the audience that the Klan was too busy being pro that it did not have any time to be disturbed by any insinuations to the contrary and that any citizen of this country who obeyed the laws and tended peaceably to his or her own business did not need to worry about being molested by this or any other organization.
Before closing his lecture the Rev. MacMahon invited the ushers who
were clothed in the full regalia of the order, to step upon the stage and remove their hoods, to show the audience that the members of the Klan were not afraid to uncover, as some of the yellow sheets had spread the propaganda that members of the Klan were afraid to show their faces. The stage curtain was lowered and upon the raising of the curtain 30 members of the Klan stood uncovered with a large American flag for a background and a fiery cross lighted upon the stage. - The address was very enthusiastically received as Rev. MacMahon was interrupted several times in his address by the applause of the audience. In closing he asked any member of the, audience who desired more infor
mation to fill out the small question
naire which had been handed to every
one, and hand to the ushers on the way out of the theater or mail to Box 212, Champaign, 111.

WHO CAN CONTROL BETTER? Hearst's Magazine is now running a series of articles dealing with the alleged "danger" of allowing the adherents of "The Invisible Empire" and familiarly known as the Ku Klux
Klan to attain what is evidently their object, in the mind of Wm. Randolph that of gaining control of congress and thus shaping the future legisla
tion of the country. He may or may not be right in his deductions as to
the object in view, but if he is why
should such a conclusion worry him? Perhaps he can name somebody or
some group of people who are better fitted to contr'ol congress than men who are carefully selected because, they are "100 per cent. American," but he will have some difficulty in malting people understand that there are those better fitted to run America than Americans. Most of us think that real Americans bred in the bone are pretty good people after all. And even if they are not or if they have their faults, still it's their own country after all is said and done and who has a better right to run it? Somebody sure will, and William doesn't seem to have much success at the job. Editorial in Shelburn (Ind.) Enterprise.
