Retraction Follows Filing of Suit.
East Liverpool, O. What is believed to be the first appearance of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan at a public meeting in Columbiana county,
Ohio, occurred at Salineville Sunday afternoon, when two hooded figures, wearing the robes of the Klan, with the cross of red above the heart, attended the dedication ceremonies for the new boy scout community building, while Rev. E. N. Huffer of Newell was delivering an address. In the midst of the dedicatory address of Rev. Mr. Huffer, the doors of the building swung open and the two figures marched down the aisle and presented the Newell minister with a package. Most of the 500 people

Canton, (). The Rev. W. H. Longsworth, pastor of the First Congregational church, will preach on 100 per cent. Americanism in his church, next Sunday evening, Feb. 11, 1923, at 7:30. The church has a seating capacity of 2,000 which, no doubt, will be filled to overdo wing. , Rev. and several women swooned from excitement. The Klansmen, after the package had been handed Rev. - Mr. Huffer. turned and marched from the building. Rev. Mr. Huffer opened the missive and found it to contain two American flags, $112 in currency and a letter. The letter follows: "To the Boy Scouts of Salineville. O.: "We, on behalf of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. present you with this money and ask that it apply on the building that is dedicated here today.
"The Ku Klux Klan is purely a 1U0 per cent. American organization and
is for the Eoy Scouts and all other real American organizations. We take this opportunity to explain that the every detail by the newspapers and magazines and certain elements that exist in this country. The truth is that the factions that oppose us realize that with an organization of this kind in existence their efforts to do away with the public schools and overthrow the government are in vain. "Every Klansman is bound by oath to uphold the American flag, its constitution and constitutional laws. They are bound to protect the free public schools, fredeom of speech and of press. "Could a man assume such an obligation as this and do the things that we are accused of ? "Salineville Klan, No. U2, Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, Realm of Ohio."
SEAT OF THE SCORNFUL
What is the matter with Ed Harris of the Richmond Palladium? For the past eight months he has posed in the seat of the scornful; he has poured out the poison of his intense hatred for the patriotic sons of America, residing in Wayne county, who have become members of the Ku Klux Klan. In conjunction with Henry U. Johnson, the Negro Richardson, Sam Fred and George Harrington, Ed Harris has resorted to every conceivable tnanner of intimidation; he has published every falsehood circulated against the Klan; has called it un-American, un-ChristlanJ. has even said that the Klan discriminated against religious faith of other people; has accused the Klan of inciting religious intolerance and racial strife; has accused it of being a party of the framed-up Coco-Parker burlesque, and now Ed Harris the mighty Ed of the Richmond Palladium this cosmopolitan soul, ingenious wizard has withdrawn his dagger from the bosom of the Ku Klux Klan, and now attempts to get on the band wagon by publishing the truth, which could not be other than favorable to the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. Why be cheap sport, a bad loser, an eleventh-hour band-wagon artist?. Whf doesn't Ed Harris confess to the people of Richmond that he has attempted to mislead them in his fight against the Klan, and come out like a man and apologize? This has been his cry in his paper in his attempts to intimidate the good people of Wayne county, who have associated themselves with the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. Now the public asks and demands to know why he steps down from the seat of the scornful and separates himself from the Committee of Hate, and that he tell the people of Waxne county just what conspiracies they have discussed, and just what plans they have framed to destroy the better element of people of Wayne county, and hold them up beforejhe public in a false light. It is rumored that Richardson, the negro, has been quoted ae saying that he does not feel a self-respecting "Colu'd gentl'm'n" should be party to the conspiracy of his alleged partners, Henry U. Johnson, Sam Fred and George Harrington, together with the mighty Ed Harris, and for that reason, it is understood that Richardson has been heard to say that he would have nothing further to do with the "Committee of Hate." Strange how these things, like murder, will come out, but it only proves the merit of the old adage that "Truth crushed to earth shall rise again."

The Knights of the Ku Klux Klan do not pretend to know anything about organizations like the rfoyal Order of Lions or any auxiliary organization for women. This statement is made simply to refute false reports that have been circulated from time to time.
Arcadia, Ind., Feb. . The Klan at Arcadia was visited last Thursday night by about 100 robed Klansmen from somewhere. These robed figures staged a parade
that was, first, a great surprise; sec-j
ond, dignified, orderly and thrilling: third, the beautiful fiery cross leading the parade, the colors flying and the roaring drum corps were wonderful. ! The program of the evening was j opened by the firing of two enlarges j of explosives at either end of town j which was immediately followed by several volleys from shot-guns.
The citizens of Arcadia and surrounding territory witnessed a beautiful sight when a large cross, 28 feet ' high and 14 feet wide, burst into flames. The huge cross which was planted at the extreme east end of Main St. could be seen for many rniles around.
After the parade the robed figures marched with- screaming fifes and throbbing drums to the high school auditorium where Rev. Blair was speaking to an already overflowing house. The Klansmen, however, marched in and made a white wall around the entire assembly of men and women. There was a sure enough thrill that
made keen the minds and hearts of
those that were fortunate enough to gain entrance to the room to hear the matchless address of the Christian minister. In part he said, "I happen to know that you men have sworn before "Bed, under the cross, before the flag and upon the Holy Bible that you will forever maintain white supremacy, Christianity, the Constitution and constitutional laws, law and order, true manhood and the protection of our pure womanhood. Moralizing Hypocrisy; Or, Plain Ignorance?
(By Special Investigator.)
(Continued on Page 5.)
Evansville, Ind., Feb. 6, The Evansville Courier, a good daily newspaper, of high standing, still fights the Ku Klux Klan, still follows the influence of anti-Klan propaganda and fails to heed the fact that the big metropolitan dailies have seen the light of understanding. The Courier continues to spill printer's ink and to help Governor Parker in his efforts to quit farming and take the lecture platform, still continues as the unthinking tool of its locl political disgrace, still functions as the
mouthpiece of a minority element who have controlled the vice, gambling, bootlegging and grafting privileges here in Evansville for years.
Those opposed to law and order are usually found lighting the Klan but
people here have hopes for the Courier and believe it is plain ignorance or failure to see the facts. Thinking people who were interviewed believe in the paper and its editorial
integrity. As evidence of, his inability to think for himself the editor of the Courier quotes from the Cannelton Enquirer in a recent issue. "Such coercive methods as adopted by the Ku Klux Klan under the guise of 'reform' will never convince liberal, sensible-people tbt there is any good
intent behind the movement. The trovble is there has been so many idiotic suggestions for reforms, even by force, that men feel they have a right to take law into their own hands and apply it as they wish. And this is anything but law. It is anarchy." The Klan has been called "tar-and-feather" artists, but never before ele
vated to the high pedestal of "reformers" and anyone who is well informed knows the Evansville Klan is not a set of either.
But as an organization of Evansville citizens fully determined that lawlessness must cease it will function 100 per cent, and the way to cause the Klan to retire from the field in Evansville is for the Courier and the officials of law and order to occupy that field themselves. The situation in Evansville is well known. It is intolerable and any denial is plain ignorance or hypocrisy.
If it is anarchy to ferret out these conditions and lay them before the
federal grand jury, then the Evansville Klan pleads guilty to anarchy. Some who were interviewed sur-
gested that possibly the Enquirer
would like to co-operate. Possibly it
would' like, to align itself with the bet
belief Bince that time.

Explaining that the growth of the organization had been so rapid during the past two years that it could be possible for some undesirables to gain entrance to a meeting in a clavern and be initiated, these undesirables are being weeded out and any mem
ber who is found willing to sponsor anything that is unlawful or in any manner tends -toward mob violence will be ejected, and we who are members know that he can not divulge any information which will reflect discredit upon the organization. In discussing the question of the negro problem and the misinformation which has been given members of that race, Rev. MacMahon said that he would like to occupy the pulpit of any negro church and explain that the principles of the Ku Klux Klan would
be a benefit to any mixed community where the law-abiding negro population, who know the problems of their race and are proud of their color and
want to keep it pure, will be aided in every way, as every member of the Ku Klux Klan i3 pledged to do everything in his power to see that there ia no fusion of the white blood with the black, and the negro knows that nothing but trouble can come from a mixed marriage, as any member of either race who would be so low as to mix relationship in such a manner is not fit to be a member of either race and lives the life of an outcast and tan only associate with the undesirable element. This organization will not stand in the way of any law-abiding
ot heir convictions.

Poisoned Manna! "There is a tendency on the part ot the South Bend Tribune to inflict upon the reading public the most questionable, insidious and inspired news pertaining to the Ku Klux Klan. "Public opinion, supposed to be in-' fallible, for a time follows blindly in the wake of the news, but public conscience yields readily to a sense of
fair play and eventually gives, in no uncertain terms, expressions of its resentment at being duped by either an uninformed or unthinking press. "The disposition of the South Bend Tribune to compel, by force of its news columns, the thought, the Judgment, the public conscience and the opinions of the citizens of this city is the gravest sort of evil. "It assumes, without knowledge, without basis of the fact, investigation, without reservation or restraint to impress the insidious anti-Klan propaganda upon its readers. "It, in itself, rather than the Ku Klux Klan that it assaults, is our gravest peril, and, if we have light of
understanding sufficient, we shall unmask it as our chief and highest duty.
"If there is anything today that is
demoralizing our social character and shaking our institutions to their very foundations, that is making men look at one another in askance and wonder, that seeks to breed an inconquer-
