Franklin, Ind. In a sermon preached before his congregation at the Grace M. E. Church of this city on Sunday morning, January 21, Rev. J. L. Stout is reported to have pointed out the timely work of the Ku Klux Klan in a very forcible manner. Reverend Stout, prefaced his statements regarding the work of the Klan with the statement that he was
not a Klansman; nor did he claim to have access to any inside information as to their work. He pointed out a number of instances in history in which mighty movements had stirred the people to a more worshipful conception of God and his relation to man, and to a loftier and purer ideal of national government. It was shown that in all such instances a permanent change for the better had resulted. Some Prohphecies, both ancient and modern, were cited. Among them, the prophecy previous to the Civil War that a nation could not exist half
slave and half free, the ideals of the two being directly antagonistic to each other. In like manner, he pointS ed out that the nation cannot always I exist part Roman Catholic and part I Protestant, since the one holds allegiance to a foreign dictator whfse ! wo'rd is a law unto them. His hearers were reminded in an eloquent manner that the time is at hand when the ! people should be stirred by the pressing demand for the preservation of I the institutions of our nation. If such : be the aim of the Klan, it shall perform a worthy mission.

The Brotherhood meeting of the Second Baptist Church at Fletcher avenue and Noble street, will have the opportunity Sunday, February 6, at 7:30 p. m. to hear Rev. Clarence Wilhelm of the Calvary Baptist Church.
The subject of Rev; Wilhelm's address has not been announced but he is known far and wide as a fearless preacher who does not mince words in the presentation of any subject that he undertakes to speak about. Our suggestion is that you be there early if you want a seat, because we have attended several of his meetings before and when we reached there late had to look into the window, if we got that close, or else leave.

THE KLANJNQUISITION The recently discovered murders in Louisiana supposedly by members of the Ku Klux Klan, have justly aroused the wrath of a nation for the persons who would do such a deed. It i understood that the two victims were bound, tortured and practically crucified by a band of white-robed figures. The Ku Klux Klan has disclaimed all responsibility and cognizance of the crime. Officials say that only renegades, outlaws, of the Ku Klux could have committed the murders. It is a plausible defense. No organized Jjody would countenance such practices. It is quite possible that
officials of the Klan know nothing of
suffering humanity, particularly those i this atrocity and dozens of others who make an honest effort to support j over the country which have been

Portland, Ind. Adjutant Gen Harry B. Smith and Major A.
Whitcomb, of Indiana National Guard headquarters, Indianapolis, were here today to make an investigation of the ; charges made by Mayor T. H. Flem-' ing that officers and enlisted men of j the four National Guard units here ! were affiliated with Ku Klux Klan activities. General Smith, after a cursory investigation in which he failed to obtain evidence that would support the charges made by Mayor Fleming he said, returned to Indianapolis with Major Whitcomb, leaving the impression that further investigation of the controversy here would not be made pending substantiation by the mayor i of the charges. Mayor Fleming states that he has l proof that the commanding officer of the four guard units here is an official of the Ku Klux Klan and expects to furnish this proof to the Adjutant General. when only one or two were to blame
We see such things practiced every day. Especially since these men are unknown, and . their regalia recognized, their private p'oltings are. blamed on the vast whole. And naturally the Klan regrets su'h imposition and the oonseipient accusation of the world. But the Klan will
not punish those outlaws who brought more shame to the organization, and should not even it it could. The day of private settlement of wrongs is over. Individual retribution has given way, long since, to justice by society, through the courts. Even if officials knew and could punish members who are responsible, ' they themselves, under existing laws, I would be amenable to similar puishi ment. Law does not recognize private
' venaeanco. ! The main trouble with the Klan is ; the ease with which such outrages i can happen. It can not prevent them; I its nature makes them easy. Itesponsibility of crime can- not easily i be fixed when a score of masked men horsewhip another. And, our primi
tive instincts and natural sympathy to the contrary, the whole scheme of mob law violates our most sacred heritages and our soundest convictions. It would be unjust to punish every member of the Klan for what a few did. And it is obviously up to the Klan to aid in bringing the guilty to justice; which, of course, is hardly likely. The Klan countenances such atrocities, and sanctions principles which make recurrences possible, and
since it is a law-breaking agency and not a law-aiding one as it stoutly

A similar situation arose during the
recent strikes. Unionism was often
injured with the public, simply be cause a few loyal if misguided mem
berg became vandals and broke laws
for private ends. We could not just ly condemn the principles of organ
ized labor because a few memberB turned renegades and disturbed our Deace. Nor would our own wrath

proved loath to aid the law, but more
through personal sympathy than from general principles. Unionism does
not stand for vandalism, but the Klan'
