Fewer than 60 persons attended an anti-Ku Klux Klan meeting held in New York city under the auspices of the Equal Rights League, according to the New York Sun. Samuel Untermeyer was scheduled ta speak but failed to show up. Half of those present, most of whom were elderly women, had left the .hall before Allen Carruthers,- chairman, had finished his introductory remarks. A resolution was adopted by the Methodist Ministers of Chicago condemning the action of Chief Justice McKinley of the criminal court in bar ring members ofthe Klan from juries His action was characterized as "Vir tually depriving Klansmen of their rights of citizensip, and in the nature of class legislation." The Rev. Newell Dwight Hills of Brooklyn, N. Y., one of the most noted Protestant pastors in America, de fended the secrecy of the Klan from his pulpit in a sermon delivered in his church on Dec. 3, when he declared Americans are constitutionally op posed to secrecy, but they are not prejudiced, against the secret fraternities in our colleges, the secret cere monies of the Masons, the secret oaths of the Knights of Columbus, the seret Hebrew societies, the secrecy of the Elks and Odd Fellows; and they are even intellectually hospitable toward the fact that banks and stores and railways keep their private books and that the law defends them in locking up their secrets so that their opponents can not discover them." During the course of his sermon, the Rev. Hillis referred to the opentreaty, openly arrived-at- policy of ex President Wilson, reminded his con gregation that Mr. Wilson was forced to abandon it as impracticable. The pastor endorsed the Klan's stand on the free public school question, and quoted the late Theodore Roosevelt, who said, "The best way foj the American boy and. girl to understand the Italian, Greek and other foreigners, is to rub shoulders with them and meet mind with mind in the class room." He said he held in his hands some two hundred telegrams which were replies received by him in answer to queries that he had sent from time to time to mayors, sheriffs and other public offi cials of towns ana cities where Klan outrages had been reported in the press, and that every reply received contained a specific denial that the outrages were in any way traceable to the Klan. The Boston Advertiser, last Sunday began what it terms anexpose of the Klan. Its initial onslaught was a seven-column screamer in 72-point type across the front page: "One Hun dred thfiusand Ku Klux Klan Grip New England." And just below that in a sub-head: "Vast Army Sworn to Drive Katholics, Koons and Kikes from every public office." In the fourth paragraph, we read, "Weeks of patient investigation by the Boston I Daily and Sunday Advertiser reveals ' that the mysterious society with its fiery cross, its ghostly habiliments ; and goblin faces has settled upon this ; community like a blanket." Further I on the article announces that "The in : crease in membership in the' Klan in i New England in the last six months has been over 1,000 per cent." And that "It's membership includes some of our most influential men." Tho following telegram, which is self-explanatoj-y, from Edward Young Clarke to one of his field represcnta ' tives, thoroughly explains his position ! on the question of admitting. Catholics i to the order: "The statements in the press to the effect that I had made any suggestion of any kind regarding change in con stitution as adopted by the Novem ber Klonvocation, is absolutely false, and if you will read this document you will know that it is impossible for Catholic, Jew, negro or foreign born to ever become members of our or ganization. I approve and endorse absolutely the requirements now ex isting for membership in our organ! zation and I have never intimated to anyone that I did not approve same or that I wanted it changed "I gave an interview on the possible world-wide extension of the Klan, and my interview was, in substance, the same as my discussion of the world wide activity of the Klan in my written address read at the Klonvokation I approve of, and am preparing report on, as instructed by tne luonvokation, a plan looking to the extension of the strong arm of the Klan to the Prot estant -white men of the world, in order that the Klan may be instru mental in spreading the Protestant re ligion, and upholding the supremacy of the white race throughout the world. I was purposely misquoted, because the enemies of the organization knew that to make me say the things I was supposed to have said, would create dissension inside our ranks, and discredit me. It is simply another effort, on the part of the enemies of the Klan, to make me the storm-center of &a attack by malicious misrepresentation in ah effort to bring dissension inside our ranks. Our membership must sit steady, and re fuse to believe thines that on their face, are ridiculous, and must not believe thingsbout the leaders of the work read in the enemy press. I made a full denial the day after the. report appeared, but only a limited number of the papers that carried the original story, carried my denmV which shows .. m .

This donation will be a great help in pro viding provisions for his comfort and relief during his .illness. Beecher is a highly respected boy and is one of the most worthy recipients of any one in Elwood as he has been a most patient sufferer during his four years' sickness. Elwood Call-Leader. THE MER ROUGE CASE There is an evident purpose in Louisiana and elsewhere to create public prejudice against an organization. Last August, two men were murdered in a brutal way, and their weighted todies thrown into a Louisi ana lake. Whoever the culprits were, they were devils in human form, and merit any. sort of punishment. The fiends were said to be hooded and from that statement they are classed with the Ku Klux Klan. The arrest of the former mayor of Mer Rouge, while studying in a Baltimore medical school? is one of the outstanding incilents of the case. If he is guilty, he deserves punishment. He himself declares his innocence, and his friends ?ay he can establish an alibi when arraigned in court. The man's assertion is that he is marked for slaughter jy the vicious element of Louisiana, including the liquor anarchists whom he prosecuted when in office. Gover nor Parker's efforts to bring the exmayor back, when considered along side his personal and official contempt for the prohibition amendment, gives color to the charge of malicious persecution. The papers have been full of propaganda. They even went so far xs to publish every detail of the crime, when everyone knows that those de tails are not in possession of the newspapers; neither the mam points in the killing of these men. The pub licity looks purely in the direction of prejudicing the public mind in order o get somebody, much more so than to catch real criminals and punish them for the crime. We predict that he real purpose will come to light; that those who oppose the anti-Catho lic and the anti-liquor features of the Ku Klux Klan are using this murder of two men as an occasion to advance heir own cause, rather than to catch md punish real criminals. And, while his is said, it is saying nothing whataver in favor of the Klan. The perpetrators of the August crime, regard'ess of who they are, or what body hey belong to, should be brought to justice speedily. If the Klan was responsible in any way or degree for he murders, that fact should be snowu and appropriate punishment nflicted. However, to attempt to con vict any man or organization in ad vance of trial, as is plainly the case in the Mer Rouge affair, is an unworthy course altogether. FIERY CROSS REPORTED NEAR TIPPECANOE CITY Tippecanoe City was given Its first open demonstration of Ku Klux Klan activities about 8 o'clock Thursday night when a fiery cross was reported to be burning west of the west cor poration line. Tne spectacle attracted numerous persons from this city, who when ar riving upon the scene found no cere monies of any kind other than the lighted cross which was about 10 feet tall.
