CLEANUP IS URGED AT NEWPORT, KY. HARVEY COMPLAINS OF ALLEGED NUISANCE AND TRIAL. Newport, Ky, Rev. William B. Harvey, pastor of the First Baptist church, Newport, who created a stir by posting a bulletin, giving "God's blessing to the Ku Klux Klan," and urging it to go ahead with their "good work," said Wednesday the notice wouldremain until Friday. It will be taken down then, he said, to make room for a church notice. Rev. Harvey said he received a telephone call from Case Thomasson, Newport safety commissioner, late Tuesday, regarding the posting of the bulletin. "Chief Thomasson desired to know why I took the 'slam' at police," Harvey said. "I told him facts regarding a certain nuisance and he agreed with me." Harvey said Thomasson did not order him to remove the notice. The bulletin reads: "Ku Klux: God bless you if you can rid -Newport of Madame LaRosen of 429 W. Fifth St. The officers either can not or will not." The sign is in three-inch letters and electrically lighted at night. Harvey said his action grew out o'failure of a jury to conVict Mrs. Angie LaRosen on a charge of operating a disorderly house under the most conclusive evidence" in Newport police court Tuesday. Harvey intimated he would post anothei sign next week unless police took action against saloon owners who have failed to comply with an ordinance requiring that "blinds" and stained glass windows be removed from cafes so the public may be given an unobstructed view of the interior. Cincinnati Post. PRISCILLA DEAN Priscilfa Dean, I am tipping my hat to you. And all the nation Is going to love you all of the nation worth while. Priscilla is a star in the movies, who moved into the constellation not under the motor power of the passionate kiss of an amorous producer. The impelling force was innate talent. She lias startled the producers of this nation, and won lor herself a permanent berth in the heart of America. Long live Priscilla Dean! - . . - America needs you! She is a star on the Universal lot. She was booked to play the role of "Cassie Cook," in "Driftin'," Alice Brady's old stake vehicle. "Cassie Cook" is an immoral character and Priscilla knew that if she took"that role, millions of little girls would consciously or unconsciously take up the .ideals o immorality, and ! she refused to play the part. "You must," said the surprised manager who had never found anything a star wouldn't play from strip ping to their beads, to being a mother struggling out in the snow with an illegitimate child. "You must," he almost shouted, "if William A. Brady permitted his daughter' to play it, I see no reason why you shouldn't go on with the part.", "I will play no immoral character," said the great actress as she stamped her foot. With those words She made histoid on the American screen. She marked the turn in the long road of depravity and sensualism that has almost wrecked this nation. Priscilla Dean has done more to awaken the American conscience than all other influences combined. She has defied a manager and saved a nation. As Priscilla Dean has done, others will do. 1 am speaking of real artists, not producers' favorites ushered into stardom via the bedroom of lecherous producers. The real big ones of the screen are goiijg to taboo the low and sensual. The real stars in the firmament of the silent drama are going to let their lustre shine on work that will live and inspire. rne nonk-a-tonk "stars ' will con tinue to play the vile and vicious, con tinue to degrade and be-devil the morals of the young people of this land as long as the producers lead them to it. It took Priscilla Dean to save a na tion. I am way down here in Texas, Pris cilia Dean, but I am tipping my hat to you. You have slipped into the heart of all America. The nonde scripts, the whilom stars, and the de graders of little girls Will pass with the months, but you will live forever Hereafter every time I hear of Priscilla Dean picture I am going to quit work and run down there and look and applaud. KLANSMEN VISIT LANDESS CHURCH
Mysterious Stranger Appears at Service and Gives Rev. Franti Letter and Fifteen Dollars in Money. Landessville, Ind. The series of meetings held at the Christian church, closed Monday night. Twenty-one came forward during these meetings and took the vdw to live a righteous life. Sunday evening, just when the Reverend was to read the lesson, a Klansman advanced from the rear of the audience; going up the aisle to the front, he handed the minister a large envelope which contained $15 in currency and a very encouraging letter which was read by the Reverend to the congregation. Thanking the Klansman by a rising vote, he quietly passed out and was gone. No one knew who he was, where he went, or where he was from. Van Buren News-Eagle. County Kiansmen Extol Efforts of Rev. Wenger . Geneva, 0- Knights of the Ku Klux Klan visiting the Park St. church of Christ, on Snnrtnv sveniti? lenvins? 419 in an envelope, commended the pastor of the church, I Boyd Wenger, in a letter contained in the same envelope, it has been learned. The letter, which was written in Ashtabula, according to the heading, read as follows: "Please find enclosed a small donation which comes from some of the members of your church and city and same can be used at your discretion. You are to be commended for your efforts in seeking to make your community a better place in which to live thereby perpetuating your wonderful race and keeping the fires of religious training afire in your community. "We want to commend you and your good people for ther noble work and may the Graat God of all bless and prosper you in this noble work of and for Jesus Christ, the Savior of all mankind." The letter was signed, "The Knights of the Ku Klux Klan of Ashtabula County." The demonstration lasted just long enough for the nine hoc tied mea to enter, stand in a row before the pulpit, kneel to pray and file out. The leader, in his prayer, asked for the blessings of, the Almighty to rest on the state, nation and the executive forces? " ' "' Preaches on Bible The pastor, following the demonstration, preached on the topic, "The Sword Unsheathed, or the Bible for the Masses." Rev. Wenger pointed out in his sermon the Bible was the greatest factor in the uplifting and ennobling of he nations of. the world and that through the art of printing it was made possible. to educate the masses. "My reason for speaking on this ubject is because of so much criti cism, as to the Book, to keep it out of the public schools and that it has no place in the affairs of the nation," the pastor said. "Prof. Thorndike says that the neessity for education arises from the fact that what is, is not what ought be. Education, is development. training, a cultivation of something for the purpose of growth the body, the mind, the sonl. A liberal educa-! tion looks toward quantity, toward en largement. It implies expansion opposed to narrowness. What has the Bible to do with edu cation? Education without the Bible is like a steam engine without a boiler or a man without a heart. Man un aided in darkness died in despair. The Bible lets in light, Grant said, 'Hold ast to the Bible as the sheet anchor of-your liberties.' There is no liberal jducation without the Bible." Rev. Wenger discussed the relation )f the Bible to spirituality and to haracter. Bible in Every Celt "There is a state law in Ohio which compels the placing of a Bible in every prison cell. It would be better to edu cate the child in the home and the public school rather than wait until he is in jail," he said. "Moral character is determined by ts sacred book, to the extent that the nation into which the ideals of the Bible have entered has been ennobled enriched and made the channel for the uplifting of other peoples and na tions." In 61s sermon, Rev.' Wenger told svhat the Bible would do for the home He said the family was God's first in stitution and the family must be safe ?uarded. He gave statistics showing .he comparative number of marriages and divorces in 1916 in the country. When there were 1,040,778 marriages ind 108,701 divorces one-tenth of tho marriages being failures because the Bible was not playing its part in the family. Geneva Free Press. ANOTHER GOOD DEED. EXACTLY THAT REAL ECONOMY never confuses PRICE with VALUE. PRICE is what you pay for an article. VALUE depends upon the amount of satisfaction you get out of it. PRICE should never enter into the question when buying coffee. VALUE is the determining factor that decides whether the buying of a certain brand is REAL ECONOMY or otherwise.
