I had a reference in this column to the

gifts of Christmas baskets and money

which the Ku Klux Klan in this coun

The baskets were at the Army head

quarters, yesterday, and made an im

been nearly a hundred of them. In

addition, the Salvation Army people

say that the Klan turned over a big

wad of money, to be used wherever it may do the most good. The gifts rep

resent a total of several hundred dol lars.

WRITE FOR LECTURE DATES'

In addition to the gifts to the Salvation Army, I learned of a number of individual cases, which are pretty well known in this community, of the Chrismas activities of the Klan. One is that of a street car employe who has been laid up with carbuncles and out of work, and who has just received a purse of something like $80 to tide him over, until he gets well. Another is that of a man who has just lost his six-year-old boy, and has now himself been taken down with diphtheria. This poor fellow has three other children dependent on him and was worrying intensely about what was going to

happen to the family, when the Klan stepped in and began playing Santa Claus. The man is getting the best medical attention, serum treatment, etc., several tons of coal have been put j in, the children are to get clothes and a lot of presents, and the man's mind : is relieved from all care. Another case is that of a worker in one of our facj tories, who also lost a baby this week, j Some members of the Klan took time from their own affairs to accompany i the little casket to Muncie, where the

bahy is to be buried. Others agreed to look after the family and two heaping bushel baskets have been contributed for the family's Christmas, beside the subscription of money.

in, howeyeifird we try.

Clubs promise most to our insistent yout

And diamonds glitter to our later gaze,;

But melancholy spades our hopes amazed

And leave them buried after all, forsooth.

We count the riches of the passing days,

Our gains, our losses, and our gain withal,

Our greatest gain, the one that once so small,

Ever increasing, stays with us always:

Joy after joy approaches and departs, "Js But we have kept the fellowship of hearts! & -Timothy Barry i9lt,VESTeN MWAtt UNION

Another phase of the activities of this body, which comes to me on what seems unquestionable authority, was brought about in connection with a reqent tragedy which shocked this community. That tragedy was

the resuit, many of the dead man's friends believed, of the activities of a certain gambling outfit that was operating without much pretense at secrecy, in this city. Just how much the suicide had lost, nobody seems to know very positively, but it amounted to hundreds of dollars, which went into the hands of the gamblers. I was told, yesterday, that a lot of evidence had been collected by members of the Klan in this county, and then the gamblers got wind of it. The whole thing was hastily closed up and has stopped forever, so far as this city is concerned. The same authority.tells me that members of the Klan have collected and turned over to the police, of late, a lot ; of evidence which has enabled the city I authorities to arrest and to convict some notorious bootleggers and other offenders this winter. Ku Klux Aids Salvation Army Several hundred dollars in food and cash will be turned over to the Salvation Army by the local organization of the Ku Klux Klan, according to Capt. L. W. Amberger, who is in charge of the Richmond corps of the Salvation Army, last night. A number of baskets of groceries have been delivered at the headquarters of the Army, and the balance will be taken there today, it was stated. The donation of the Klan was of

great importance to the Army in furthering ifs Christmas plans. Capt. i Amberger stated last night. Owing to the light donations which have been ; made by the people of the city this year in response to the appeal of the organization, it was thought necessary to cut the issuing of baskets to poor : people from 75 to GO. The army dis- ! tributed 73 last year. With the Klan donation the army will now give away : over 90 baskets, Capt. Amberger said, i The baskets will be ready for distribution Saturday morning. Most of i the people receiving them will call at i the headquarters of the army, on S. Fifth St. In the few cases where the recipients can not call, their basket ' will be delivered by Capt. Amberger. I Each basket will contain a chicken and ; sufficient vegetables for a dinner. i Richmond Item.

CLL, well, well," said the Old Year, "it is so nice to see you, New Year. I -congratulate 'you, and as the good people say, I wish you a Happy New Year." "Thank you, thank you," said the New Year, in a

sweet young voice. "I have great respect for you, Old Year.

You have been so wise and so good, j You have done so much that is fine, j Now,' how I shall be I do not know at all. I feel so unceptainr of myself." "Oh, you'll get over that," said the Old Year; "you are a little nervous now, but you will be all right in no time at all. "Why, I remember last January my very first month of all I was all over my nervousness before the month was over." "Were you, indeed?" said the New Year. "Weil, that Is most encouraging to hear." "Yes," said the Old Year, "one gets over one's nervousness .very quickly when one Is a year. I don't know how It Is with people, but I know how it is with a year. ' "Of course, I suppose a person might need more than a few weeks to get over nervousness, but then a person Is about so much longer than a year. After, all, a year isn't so long."

"Where are you going now?" asked

the New Year. "Why, don't you know?" the Old Year asked. "I've never been told," said the New Year. "You see, I have lots to learn. I'm so young," and the New Year sighed a little. "Oh, you mustn't sigh," said the Old Year. "It's so beautiful a thing to be young, and strong, and new, and brisk.

Of course, too, It Is especially nice for a year, because so much is learned in advance, as it were. They go on just as they were going on before, and try to keep you from feeling sensitive and shy. v "People make it so easy for you. you'll discover that.
