am welt assurea tnat tnere are
jin heads in the Catholic church. I
tnow tnere are tjainoiics wno nave
permitted their zeal to put their disjretion in the background. And we lave our pin heads. I have been a
ninister for nineteen years and it has
been my personal observation that 1
aave never known one single so:alled i'rotestant actively engaged in
Jie dissemination of the literature of religious hatred who ever amounted :o modicum to my church. I have tnown them again and again to be nen who seldom if ever attended di.ine worship, who contributed little ,f nothing to the support of the jhurch and her great benevolent programs, and if the lift of the Protestxnt church depended upon them there ould be no Protestant church in a lecade. The farther a man gets into .he spirit of the church the more the irus of rancor is eliminated from him. The religion of Christ is a re-
'igion of good will and peace on 3arth and we have no right under
he guise of any profession to make
.t anything less tnan tnat.
"Another provision of the Constiution is the guarantee of free assem
bly, a free press and free speech. We
have no man or group of men here
who can say as did a king of France,
I am the state.' The Constitution
takes care of that. I can criticise the
:ity government, a court or a congress or the President himself. That is going some but it is true. I don't have to know much to exercise this i-ight, either. Yet, 1 hold in my hand in excerpt taken from a speech deivered in this state by an organizer of one hundred per cent, red-blooded Vniericans, who in the introduction af his speech announces that he is 'nine tn snpak in the interests
this organization because he has earned in his travels over this counry that it is not a safe thing to talk ibout it unless you are a member of t. In other words ho prefaces his -.peech on one hundred per cent. Americanism by the statement that hose who differ with him and his ;omrades had better keep their mouths shut if 'they know what is ?ood for them. Any other" procedne would not be safe. Can a man
lefy the constitutional guarantee of ree speech, or even cover his defy
,vith a veiled threat and be a one mndred per cent. American? As a citizen I will exercise this right, and ou will exercise it, and when we foreit it we are no longer Americans jut knaves and vassals. 'The Constitution guarantees me .he right to the' personal ownership jf property. No man can take my property away from me, and no one :an, save the state and then only by jaying me for it. As a citizen I have x right to engage in lawful business
ind this right is stamped and sealed yitli the Seal of the Republic. AHy nan who deprives me of that right is attacking the Constitution as well as ttvselfi Can any man or group of
men be accepted as rae hundred per I
cent. Americans "who deprive any citizen, native or foreign-born, but a citizen holding his documents of citizenship who will engage in a boycott, the most depraved, sneaking, unprincipal2d, cowardly and craven act of conspiring men? The boycott is in defi
ance of law, and the sponsors of a boycott are in this act breaking the law. Is this the business of one hundred per cent. Americans? "Any man who sees an advantage in the boycott is either an imbecile or
wcak minded. Suppose that other groups engage in this business. What would work for one side here, would not work for that side somewhere ?lse. Let us imagine that the Catholics should decide to organize a boycott against the Protestants of New England, in a region from Main to Rhode Island and all the way between doniinantly Catholic. What would happen? There would be an sxodus more than likely. We are struggling to regain lost prosperity
and the devil who thwarts us is the conspiring groups who in seeing their selfish preference tear "down faster than we can build. The spirit jf the boycott is the spirit of disin
tegration and collapse. One hundred per cent. Americanism will have no part in an illegal act even under cover of darkness. "liooth . Tarkington recently de
clared that America reached the peak of her spiritual and idealistic greatness in the days of the civil war, ind that from that time to this this 3pirit has been waxing and waning until today we are in the sloughs of spiritual torpor and morbid materialism. I hope he is not right. If he is we are in a desperate situation.
Can we not join hands tonight, and go into the high places with Abraham
Lincoln until we shall be transfigured
with his Americanism, and extending
not our clinched fists, but our open
hands of friendship and true Americans and say with him, 'With malice
toward none and charity for all.'
God helpus."
