We unqualifiedly and without equivocation assert that the INDIANAPOLIS NEWS intentionally falsified and lubricated the TRUTH in its account of the appearance of the FIERY CROSS on Thirty-eighth St. last Christmas Eve. The NEWS says that a crowd of 500 strange men dispersed when a police squad arrived. We were there (having received a tip by telephone
that there was a story to De nui ana we unuersaum inui me mu mv. Hethesda hospital TIMES and the STAR received the same tip in the same way) and surely sef.eXpianatory :
j Zanesville, O. Any doubt that the , Ku Klux Klan might exist in this city i has been set at rest as a result of an j occurrence of the past week. Many people, seeing the fiery cross which was burned on Blandy hill two weeks
ago, believed that, the Klan is nowoperating in this county, but definite knowledge of this is now at hand. The following letter was received by one of the committees working for the
campaign and is
there is nothing "strange" about us unless it he "strange" in these days to stand flatfooted for an operative 100 per cent. Americanism. That is the first count in the indictment! The emergency squad arrived just before the Cross blazed forth and it was they who left at once, not the crowd, one of the officers being heard to Bay, "Hell, this is no place for us. Let s go!" That is the second count!
The NEWS says, "No women were in (he crowd." We personally noted , thnt MOKE THAN ON E-1 1 ALE THE SPECTATORS WERE WOMEN! That !
is (lie I hird count '. That newspaper :ic -omit ;i4st says: "Soon AETER the departure of the strangers th- POLICE returned to Indianapolis." Fine! We left the spot forfy lle minutes alter the police had gone and ours was one of the FIRST of the MANY machines 1o go! And that Is, well, ALMOST the LAST count! There-lire mon hut why go on?
Our Business Girls.
A condition, which is true in most large cities, we take it, has been brought to our attention as being pretty general in Indianapolis. The Knights
of the Ku Klux Klan stand foursquare on "The Protection of Our Pure W oman-j hood." Therefore, discussion of this condition in Indianapolis is not out ol I place in the "Fiery Cross." One .of the most sacred institutions in the land is the home and every girl that works in an office is the potential mistress of ! ;m American home and the potential mother of future generations of Ameri- ; i ans. The modern girl in the business world has a hard enough time resist- J ing temptations without having to be repelling advances of vultures in hu- : man form. These business men, most of them, who insist on dating their j stenographers and imply that should they refuse that their jobs are in dan-j ger, are, as a rule, heads of families and ordinarily, men who have not got , the spirit of a real home life. This editorial was written because it has been I brought to our attention that the practice is general. While it applies to a specific' case, in one particularly large railway office, nevertheless it. was written in the mood, "If the. shoe fits wear it." The j Knights of the Ku Klux.Klan insists that this obnoxious practice be broken up. :
A Question.
The following question has been propounded to us-by a 109 per cent
American minister of the Gospel: "If WjUiam J. Hums, head at. the U. S. j
i na i ff 4rv(nti ia , rt iiimcr.'liiDroa monittbc rf iha Knllrhttl nf PnhimhllS' if he
not only has at his command one of the world's greatest private detective ; bureaus; if through both these most powerful agencies for getting at and be-: hind facts related to various criminal acts, trespasses and breaches of law; j if through many months of such investigation urged and provoked by certain governors of states who solicited federal aid against the Ku Klux Klari and ; 'constantly stimulated by a powerful propaganda continually alleging very ; flagrant violations on the part of the Invisible Empire; if Attorney-General j Daugherty announces that the department of justice can find no ground tori the prosecution of the Klan do you think the Klan is guilty of any of the I alleged infractions of the law or indecent and even ungentlemanly conduct'.'" "Let. 'cm howl, brother of' the white robe, tin? folded arms, and the silent
voice."
We are grateful to "Tolerance!" for increasing the sale of "The Fiery Cross" since the first-named paper made its appearance on the streets of Indianapolis.
J. Herman Wiles, Chairman Executive Committee, Bethesda Hospital Campaign: Please find enclosed a donation to be used in the rebuilding of Hethesda hospital. You are to be commended for your efforts in rebuilding "Bethesda." Believing that a greater Bethesda is needed in our city to take care of those who may be in need of medical aid and for lack .of room be turned away, and Whereas, the Ku Klux Klan is a patriotic, fraternal, benevolent order, and does not discriminate against a man on account of his religious or political creed, and Whereas, we believe in law and order, just laws, and liberty, and do not take the law in our hands, but as citizens, we believe: In using our influence to make Zanesville and community as healthful, clean and moral as possible and are striving to Make our homes as comfortable and enjoyable for our wives and children and future generations, and We believe that, by having a larger Bethesda it will be of great assistance in making Zanesville citizens healthier and will give them every possible care when they are so much in need of it. We want to commend you again for this noble work and may the Great (iod of all, bless and pros
per you in this noble work. . We are sincerely yours, the Ku Klux Klan of Muskingum County. Klan Shows Interest in Public GoodThe donation accompanying the let ter was a substantial one and indicated that the Klan was interesting itself in the welfare of the communi ty. With the exception o.f the fiery cross announcing the presence of the Ku Klux Klan, this is the first public manifestation of the organization. The letter was received by one ot
the committees and the money was ; turned over to the chairman of the executive committee who recorded the ; donation as any other c ontribution 1 might have been handled. It is un derstood that the letter anil the mone i was received on Thursday. Zanes . ville Times-Recorder.

Ku Kluxism is. an evil in itsulf. But ;t. may prove to be responsible for anther evil, far worse, which it did not leliberately create. This is the capializing of opposition to it into a poiitcal asset. The Ku Klnx Klan arose this time luring a period of unrest just us it did ifter the Civil war. It would have in be natural order of tilings a life just is long as that period, it would die of its inherent weaknesses even if not i word were said against it. Its cerenonials are ridiculous, and ridicule vould tend to destroy it. Its practices are like those of the coyote, and jublic sentiment would eventually orce it to disintegrate as a thing despised. Its principal policies are milded upon intolerance and intolrance can not flourish long in the Vmerican atmosphere. That which should be avoided is :rystallix.ing the movement, changing ts loose organization into one close;nit and strong, making members who lave, gone into the Klan as.,a joke or in excursion or adventure take their nembership with the seriousness of hurch communicants.

Because America Has Been the Haven of Refuge to the Disinherited
By SAMUEL WEST, Prose Essay. Denver Community Contest. I became an American citizen for the opportunity to be a citizen of the greatest republic in the world and to help constitute government of
Lie people, by the people and for the people. l'.ctause by becoming an American citizen I realized for the first time in rny life that men are created equal by being endowed with the rights and privileges guaranteed by the Constitution of the United fctat?s to rich and poor alike. Mecause it is a mark of distinction to be a citizen of a conntry which has progressed more in science, invention and industry in the one hundred and forty-six years of its independence than any other country in the world. Because America has always "maintained that right is might and has always been of service to the world, maintaining that the badge of service is the badge of sovereignty Because America lias been the haven of refuge to the disinherited, the oppressed, the suffering and the submerged.

Dead European Towns. Europe Is full of dead towns traillof glorlea from the age before the Turin raptured Constantinople and Columbus discovered America. Many of them He on small rivers, as Bruges does. For In the oays when an ocean hip was only an enlarged rowboat a tlTer harbor was preferable to the best .ocean port Such waa Seville, such
was Tisa, such once was Florence. But when the Turks cut the Indian trade routes, and when ships became too big for river ports, new cities sprang up and old, glorious cities died. Some have come to life again, like Florence and Nuremberg and Seville, because of new conditions. Some, like Pisa, and Rothenburg In Bavaria, and Ragusa in DaJ,matla, stayed dead.
