TD EOOLLECTION of a fight over I a horse more than fifty years ago has Just proved to be worth $50 a month for the rest of his life to Jacob Barger of Shawneetown, 111. Private Barger's case Is one of the most celebrated on the records of the pension bureau. It was pending for twenty years. Special, examiners took more than 500 pages of testimony regnrdlng his claim to a pension. They visited half a doeen states. Special bills providing for a pension for him were Introduced In seven or eight congresses. Kepresentatlve Thomas S. Williams of the Twenty-fourth Illinois district, In which Shawneetown is situated, finally got through a bill at the session just closed and President Harding signed It. The trouble arose from the fact that although Barger served more than a year in the Union army, there is no record In the adjutant general's
office either of his enlistment or discharge. Some of his former comrades readily recalled him. Others failed to recollect him and some even asserted there was no such man in their outfit
Then the old soldier told the story of the fight between two members of the company over a horse. It was a terrific encounter, and Private Barger unfolded the story in such detal' as only an eyewitness could have re
called. He even remembered the
name of one of the combatants.
The examiners made another reund of the survivors. The Btory of the
fight was confirmed, and. when Representative Williams produced this evidence before the House committee on invalid pensions if convinced the members that Private Barger was telling the truth and was entitled to a pension.
Columbus, Ind. Members of the
opposition tear the air and deride the
Klari as a menace to our American civilization. Speakers' oppose the order, although they admit ignorance
of the Klan's teachings; while news
papers obey the orders of their Catho
lic owners by denouncing the society. Since 1915,; the Knights of the Ku
Klux Klan has prospered despite se
vere criticism. Opposition seems to be the material on which the Klan
thrives. If a white, Gentile, Ameri
can, Protestant remarks fo a friend
that the Klan is a dangerous organi
zation, that friend remembers and be
fore long that American undergoes a
change of heart and affiliates himself with the Ku Klux. The Rev. Brightmire of Indianapolis declared that on the day following the publication of a
story connecting him with the lowly Klan, he received numerous letters from men who desired to join the society. In my home city, Columbus, the Klan had a difficult time while organizing. An attempt was made last spring to obtain the city hall there1 for a public lecture on the organization.
The city council refused its permission and the Klan speaker was forced to talk from a box in the street. Three weeks ago in . Columbus, the Klansmen marched through the streets of tne city 'and escorted Dr. L. A. Brown of Atlanta to the city hall where he was welcomed by the largest crowd
that ever packed the building. The city officials, had objected to the first
meeting, so there remained but one
thing or the Klansmen to do and they did it well. Saul persecuted the Christians until the light revealed to him his mistake. Paul then became the greatest apostle of the Bible. In . the realms of the Klan, it has been foun:l true that the
man 'who attempts to destroy the order will usually make a very successful member. Once let him see the light, and he changes positions instantly. The Klan has progressed at a wonderful pace. Throughout the nation thousands of citizens are members of this great fraternal society. I became a member of the society in Columbus. While away at college I became connected with the organization there.
One of the fraternal organizations of
the campus was composed of Klansmen. During one of my vacations I
visited my birthplace, a' small town in the western part of the state. My surprise was genuine when I met a Ku Klux organizer there. I actually believe' that if I were to climb the highest peak in the Rocky mountain system, I would find tie blazing cross on its summit. And it is well that this condition is true for the sake of our country, the Klan-'must succeed.

By HERBERT S. HADLEY, University of Colorado.
The question will naturally be asked, conceding that higher educational standards would decrease the yearly crop of lawyers, would it improve the profession as a whole, the administration of justice and the confidence of the people in lawyers and the courts? Particularly is it nec3ssary for the welfare of the country that our lawyers should be educated men within the best and broadest meaning of that term. Tf our system of jurisprudence consisted of a set of arbitrary rules ; if it was based solely on a system of logic or philosophy, one might properly become a practitioner who had not enjoyed a comprehensive general and profes8ional'education. But such is not the case. Our system of jurisprudence is the result of the struggles and achievements, the hopes and aspirations of men who have lived and wrought since civilization began. It consists of rules of conduct born of human experience and needs. So if one is to effectively understand and administer this system he musfunderstand history in its broadest sense, philosophy, logic, economics, sociology, and to know something at least of ancient and modern literature and science. Proves Her Father's Theories
APPRECIATION The co-operation that has been extended to me by my many friends in my efforts to help promote a real American newspaper, that is so much in demand, has been greatly appre ciated.
I am also grateful to Mr. Reichard for the confidence he has in me. I will at all times strive to give the public first consideration, and further solicit its co-operation in perpetuating higher American ideals. My prayer: "May God give me strength and ability to carry on." C. B. SALYER, Business Manager.

This is one of the first photographs ever to be made of the famous columned tombs of . Tlnlan, an island north of Guam in the Marianna group of islands.-- These ruins- and tombs were first reported by Capt. George Anson, an English naval officer, in 1746, but it was only in Jnly last, that the ancient ruins have been accurately
measured, described and. photographed. The work was authorized
by the Bishop museum of Honolulu, which sent a naturalist to the scene.
Human remains and a great quantity of stone Implements were traced' to
prove that the Marianna islands were
