ie Unite' States of America anTif God per mits us to lire, -which He will and nobody bother, -which they can't trhtil the first of next year, I am quite aure there will bo a million. When I first Joined there was not a thousand In the world. I am not telling you this to make you think it did not amount to anything until I got into It, and I know all about it so I will just talk to you about it quietly for a while on the A, B C's of the organisation, will tell you who they are and just what sort of people they are and why nobody else cajj get in. I suppose you witl be Just as interested in that as anything else. If you see that I am going to leave oat-anything just speak np and ask me and if I don't know I won't tell you, but I will know. First of all, We arc a chartered organization. We have all the rights and privileges that go with any other organization in the United States of America. We are thoroughly constitutional and patriotic in our beginning as well as our practice. The first time I came to your state the authorities in that particular little city told me that I should not speak. To think about a town that has no more sense than to stop a good speech as I make. They acted silly and the mayor told me rigbt to tny face that I could not peak in that town and I told him that I would speak, and we chewed the rag for a half hour. We chewed it until we chewed it up. After a half hours' time I left him with the understanding that if I spoke in his town I would have te speak by law I would have to stand by my rights as an American citizen. There are men in this house now that know it cost me $500 to get an injunction against the chief of police and the mayor of that city before I could speak, but I ' was never as happy in my life as I was when that warrant was read to the mayor. I stood off and looked at him pat of the tall-end of my eye and said some pretty mean things. I said, "Doggone you, I told you' I was going to speak, didn't I," and I did. "We wrote a constitutional law for the organization after we -'were chartered and laid down in that four qualifications for members. Two or three years after that ' constitutional law was published It did .not cut' ant figure at all because ,we did not cut any ' Agar. but we have tou frf.ch to try thsit. It would take organization to do that That is Just one of oat requirements. We are not anti-Jew, we are just Gentile. ' The Jew has been organized ever since the days of Abraham. God only knows how long. They have, or some of them have names that I have to sneeze the name. I was going to pronounce some of them, but I will not. If I did tell you he would swear it was not that. He has an organization and he always has had. He had an organization long before we ever dreamed of having any and we never have objected to it. Just organize and organize, just go ahead and we will not care. I have not any objection to the Hebrews to organize in any form, shape or fashion. If they want to come together and study the history of their father then whose business is it? It is not my business and I don't think it is anybody else's business, and I would fight until I was bloody if any one said that I, as an American man, could not organize my peoplo in any way, shape or fashion that I wanted, but I shake my fist under his nose that says I do not have a right to organize my people and I have already done it. I have just as much right to organize my peoplo as a Gentile as you have to organize your people as a Jew. That is all we have done just organized as Gentiles, not to fight you but see if we can't persuade you to tend to your own business and let us alone. We never bothered you to start with and will not to wind up with if you don't get in the way. The truth is I am not responsible for not being a Jew, anyway. I am not. I did not have a thing whatever to do with it. Nobody ever consulted me at all whether I would bc born a Jew or a Gentile. If I had been consulted no telling what I would have said. You know fifty years ago ray fathefand mother under the guidance of God Almighty decreed that I should be a Gentile. We are Gentiles and 'the Jew can not join because he is not a Gentile. I could not join their organization because I am not a Jew. It may be a better organization and I can't know because I can't get in there. Theti how does he know about tht Ku Klux Klan? He has never gotten In and won't? I 'have always heard it said that old melds could tell you how to raise children, and that people who did not belong to anything could tell you the good and bad,, of all secret organizations. The New York World would telryou all about the Kn Klus Klan just like me criticising Harvey's grammar, and asked me If-1 erer saw it and T would have to tell him that I never had" No; we are hot anti-Jew, ladies and gentlemen, hot at all We are Just OenUles "and I.' want to tell yon, ''something, hut before I want . to -tell, jrottometblnselBeV' i tha Jaw had not leea 'fooled-within this s country he never would, hare raised , his hand titi MsfToice against the -Kir Klux Klan Tie Jew', has never
fffrT"" Ku Klux Klan is not against a negro. The old Ku Kluk Klan has saved him from the most despicable of white men. I used to think that they came from up here I did I thought all scalawags and carpetbaggers were Yankees, but I find out from a little closer investigation that some of the lowest-down cusses of these were men of the South that hung around in the woods and swamps while their brothers were being killed, slipping out and joining forces with other white men from other places in the country and running the country, and the old Ku Klux Klan rose up and saved' the colored man of the South from the doom and damnation of these tobacco-seeded scalawags from all over the earth. You know these carpetbaggers and scalawags did not have backbone enough to come right out in the open and say what they thought, and they hid behind the negro. They took the southern negro and put him in position of prominence and power. The courts had operated with him for more tban seven years arid the white men and women of the south had to put up with it. I said the original Ku Klux Klan saved the negro. Here is what I mean by . that. The original Ku Klux Klan was born in the night and it came on the scene with pillow slips over their heads and bed sheets wrapped around them. That made the white man who was back of that sort of thing in the South get out. I thank God that I have lived long enough to know and know it good and well that the real men hot only of Indiana, but every other state north of the Mason and Dixon line i I don't know where that is, but smebody said it was the line that showed the difference between cold light bread and hot biscuit). Not a real honest-to-God American man or woman north of the Mason and Dixon line don't know that. I am glad I have learned that. It took me nearly 50 years to learn- It, but I am- still learning. Here Is how the old Klan raised u in one night and with it subdued th. scalawags and carpetbaggers. Some scattered back, they ran over Something' and fell down and killed their foot selves, and when tnat was done, why Massa John's negroftnan was just as nice as he had alwajs been and in little wlitfe the worljl was moving along all right. Flowejrs were blooming in the yards and fields were green', sunshine Was brighter, and girls were singing attain; and 'wives and mothers had a bloom on ' their cheeks, and the whole wide world had waked up, and the ngro was the happiest one of the bunch. It has been that ."way, until, sitoebody bothered him right here lately and told Wm the Ku-Klux was organized, against' hint. Now, 1 want to ask you a question. You can just reserve the answer. Why did the New York World not succeed in killing the Ku Klux Klan as It killed everything else it ever jumped on? Why did it not kill the Ku Klux Klan and what would be some answer to that? The New Your World is more powerful than it ever was heretofore and has just put things out of business. Well, now why did it not put these things out of business? It had 15 other daily papers, or 1G, which jumped right on top of us. You fellows don't know it, but I know this, for three months the Ku Klux Klan in the national office there was three months that our old machine1 did not move one inch, and it took $22,000 in hard cash to hold that old machine on the track. The New York World, through congressional investigation with our Wizard threshed it out, and in all that three months' time we paid $22,000 to hold that machine on the track and it never moved one inch. Be is said to the glory of God and the J glory of manhood of America that we kept it on the track during that time. In ten months following that time 200,000 Anglo-Saxons had enlisted under the Ku Klux Klan. That is the way they put us out of business. We

American. If they have the right to organize w.e haVe the right, to organize,, All right the, that is all we have done, just exercised that right. Ladies andf gerfttemen," has this? occurred to you -that there is aboout as much tomjay rot in this country,'even in our Protestant church about as much tommy rot over this foreign question as any other question that you can bring up at all. Now, with all respect to you that are listening, to you that were not born In America, I would do anything for you, be a big brother' to you,, and with all respect to you, let me talk" to this gang of my own country fellowmen ' a few minutes. You know that Women's Missionary Society in your church. Do you know what a question you had up about the foreigner and you spoke to your preacher about it and you got him very; much' interested. t A certain politician' saw the Interest' brought about in this- class and delivered to them a message about this great question. He said among other things that as soon as he got to Washington that he would introduce a bill ftfy' there that would open the doors to everybody everywhere, and do you know what we did. We absolutely rallied to him and We elected him and sent him to Washington, and he was one politician that actually tried to do what he said and he introduced' that bill. And say, Ladies and Gentlemen, I noticed In the. paper yesterday the supreme court made one announcement, but I am glad it can. The eiupreme court of the United States ha not made but one announcement on the immigration law of this country, and I challenge any man in ithis crowd to meet me down at the prar-.d hotel and convince me that I arn wrong. There has not been a real honest-to-God immigration law passed in the United States df America in forty years. Why in the name of hih heavens, and I ask this in all selfcousiiess, can't the United States pass! an immigration law that has half as much sense as others? Many of you do know that a man can't even startj to Canada if he is a foreigner, no fmatter whether he lives in a great empire, whether he lives in a big countrjy or on a thumb nail speck. No matter, he can't even start to Canada ai a citLzen until he has qualified for cfitizenishin where he is. The United States jf America is the great est country in the world. If you can't be proud of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan you can be proud of Old Glory. The smartest men in the world today are the men of America. 1 have no more doubt of that than I have of drinking the; balance of the water in that piteher, land the outstanding men lV fiT jations of the eathk eygrv one ovthenf are- men that in their make-ill are well-nigh American. Outside ofe United States in the whole wide orld Lloyd George of England wouldnake a better American' today han Tm Read of Missouri. There are onigh:, as I speak to you 34,000,000 'oreigiers in the . United States of Vmerica. Some of them are good citizens, the greater majority-are not ?ood citizens, never will be and by the very genius of things never can be.. They are hero 34,000,000 strong. Ther$ are 17 schools in the city of Boston supported by public money where men like you and women like you go down in their pockets and pay taxes to educate them. Seventeen schools in Bdston supported by public taxation and in these 17 schools not one word of the English language is permitted to be read, spoken or talked. The American citizen is going down in his pocket and taxing himself to the quick to educate these 34,000,000 foreigners not to learn the language of your fathers and mine who built this country. And yes, nearly 50 per cent, of this 34,000,000 men are not allowed to learn the language of the United States. What I am asking you is this, and I am not hard on ihybod but I want to know this. Is it possible to make American citizens out of people that won't learn your language; that won't respect your flag; that won't honor your God, and that don't lve a cuss about the ideas of our fathers who wrote the Declaration of .Independence? 1 say to you, you can ino more make an American citizen out of a man who will not learn our language than you could make a fried n6$ willing to do this,, if they will not do'lt," then I have one thing to say. Doggone 1, 'em, they ought to go back where they came from. We are not against the foreigner. We want to help the foreigner be an honest citizen. The Ku Klux Klan wants to stand by you, my brother, and wants to show yqu that you can be worth something to this country and the only way that you can win the good- win of the country to yourself is to qualify as ah American citizen and adopt the standards of American manhood by endeavoring to help in the upbuilding ot the country. ?- Yon do that and you will find 'no trouble with the Ku Klux Klan or' any one. else of this country. But you must do' that and if you don't do it I am going to go to congress and then you'will be rulnfed. ; Now, I have forgotten one thing and I haven't time to mention U. 1 pjomised to quit ift the forepart of the nlghtt I am going to mention if, though; andool around with if aUtUeiwhllef : . j,1 ,., Now J haye'luiU meet toned three 1 things, you must fee white, Second you I must be a Gentil. and thlrdyou must

another, too, and then maybe Vou can't get in,- but you? can not get to without these. This is the only thing I have joined' in a long time that you can get out of without knowing it. It is the truth. It is an awful hard thing to get in, but it is no trouble to cet out of. When I was down at so and so some fellow asked me if I could tell him if there were any Ku Kluxes in. that town. And 1 asked Henrv if we had any Ku Kluxes there. He saM "My stars, 700 members," and this feF low had been trying for eierht months arid could not find whether there was a one in town or not It is an awfully hard thing to get intq the Ku Klux Klan, but, believe me, it is no. trouble to get out of. If you Tiappen to deceive some one and get in you have to get; m by lying or slipping by or something. i never in my life have seen as many people in anything that : were so anxious to. serve a fellow as you find in there to want to help you get out. Now, wo have gone over three of them. You see I have to stop and tell you something' in between each one of them so I can take up all my time. First you must be a white man, second you must be a Gentile. It is not a colored organization, it is a white man's organization. I was talking to a Jew down in the South about not letting the Jew in and I said, "You are just a fool. Yes, you are a fool." And I said, "If you wanted to join the Ku Klux Klan why in the thunder did you be born a Jew for. You can't get in because you are a Jew and I can't get in your organization because I am not a Jew." Third, no foreigner can get in because it is an American-born organization got to be born in America. And the fourth, it is awful, but I can't help it for it is there. White, Gentile, American born, and Protestant. Isn't that awful. You have got to believe in the Christian religion from the Protestant standpoint. The very minute that got out on us we were damned from one end oMhe earth to the other by the Roman Catholic. They said we were out and out anti-Catholic. It is a lie. We never were organized to defeat the Jew, negro, Catholic or foreigner. We first organized as a white man, second as a Gentile, third American born and fourth aa a Protestant, nothing else. Tha Catholics have got their organization and it is hone of their blopmin' business if we have got ours. They have got all sorts of organizations, and we have never bothered, them and we would not bother them now if they would take a day. oft and decide to let us alone.
