The first time I came to your state the authorities in that particular little city told me that I should not speak. To think about a town that has no more sense than to stop a good speech as I make. They acted silly and the mayor told me rigbt to tny face that I could not peak in that town and I told him that I would speak, and we chewed the rag for a half hour. We chewed it until we chewed it up. After a half hours' time I left him with the understanding that if I spoke in his town I would have te speak by law I would have to stand by my rights as an American citizen. There are men in this house now that know it cost me $500 to get an injunction against the chief of police and the mayor of that city before I could speak, but I ' was never as happy in my life as I was when that warrant was read to the mayor. I stood off and looked at him pat of the tall-end of my eye and said some pretty mean things. I said, "Doggone you, I told you' I was going to speak, didn't I," and I did. They took the southern negro and put him in position of prominence and power. That made the white man who was back of that sort of thing in the South get out.
