FIRST VOLUME OF INDIANA WAR HISTORY IS READY FOR THE PRINTER.
The Indiana Historical society has completed their record and are now ready to print the first volume, br “The Gold Star Volume” of the Indiana War History. The Jasper county record has been returned for correctional that might have to be made, and if there appear any mistakes, pleaee notify Mrs. C. W. Hanley immediately so that she may correct same and return to the state commission by the last of the week, otherwise it will be printed in the History as recorded here. The following letter from the Director, John W. Oliver, of the War' History Records of the Indiniana Historical Commisison: October 15, 1920 Mrs. C. W. Hanley, Chairman, War History Committee, , \ Rensselaer. Ind. Dear Mrs. Hanley: I am enclosing herewith the typewritten sketches of the Gold Star men from Jasper County, and kindly request you to proof-read them, noting particularly the names of parents and places of burial. We should like to include the place of burial on every, record if possible, and I wish you would pay special attention to this fact. Feel free to make any additional notes or corrections that occur to you. It is our aim to make these records just as complete as possible, and I suggest that you publish the list of names in the papers, calling attention to the fact that this is the final list and if there are any other names to be added, they must be sent in at once if they are to be included in this volume. I wish you would return these records to us some-time the latter part of next week, so we can make the final corrections with the view of sending them to 'the printer. JASPER COUNTY GOLD STAR MEN. Petty Officer Biggs, Dewey - - U. S. Navy Son of Marion Eugene and Clara Biggs; born January 14, 1898, Pike County, Ind. Moved to Jasper County in 1910. Laborer. Entered U. S. Navy, May 31, 1918, Great Lakes, Ill. Sent to Camp Paul Jones Navy Yards, Pa. Assigned to 22nd Company, 6th Regiment. Transferred to Dhvis-Bourmoivelle Navy School, Jersey City. Overseas in August, 1916. Died October 4, 1918, from pneumonia;. Buried in Tregnier, France. First Jasper County boy to die in service. The Dewey Biggs Post of the American Legion, Rensselaer, Ind., named in his honor. Later the body was returned to the United State and reinterred in Weston cemetery at Rensselaer, Ind,, with military honors by the Dewey Biggs Post, American Legion. Budd, Thomas Virgil - S. Navy
Son of William and Della Budd; born August 1, 1894, Howard County, Ind. Moved to Jasper 'County in 1917. Mechanic. Enlisted in U. S. Navy, May 18, 1917, Detroit, Mich. Was sent to Great Lakes Naval Training Station, Ill. Assigned to crew on U. S. S. Michigan. Made one trip to England, and two to France. Died from pneumonia, March 11, 1918, Philadelphia, Pa. Buried in White Post Cemetery, Medaryville, Pulaski County, Ind. Caster, Earl William - Private Son of George W. and Martha J, Caster; born December 21, 1895, Milroy Township, Jasper County, Indiana. Farmer. Called into service, October 2, 1917, Rensselaer, Jasper County. Wasi sent to Camp Taylor, Ky. Assigned to Company ,B. 309th Engineers Corps. Died from pneumonia, December - 19, 1917, at Camp Taylor, Ky. Buried in Crockett Cemetery, Jasper Connty, Ind. Clayton, Clarence C. - Private Son of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Clayton, (mother deceased), and foster son of Mr. and Mrs. B. F. LaFevre; 'born June 14, 1900, near WheatTransferred to Camp Robinson. Wis., thence.to Camp Mils, L. I. Went overseas in December, 1917. Participated in battles of Chateau Thierry, Verdun, and Belleau Wood. Returned to U. S. and died May 29, 1919, Fort Leavenworth, Kan., Davi**on, Lonnie •' - - Private Rensselaer, Ind. Farmer. Entered service January 9, 1918, Fort Leavenworth, Kan. Assigned to Company C, 317th Field Signal Battalion. Went overseas in July, 1918. Participated in the MeuseArgonne offensive. Died from pneumonia, October 8, 1918, in Evacuation Hospital No. 9. at Vanbacourt, Bar-le-Duc, section M, grave No. 117, France. Fritz, George - Private §on of John and Theresa Fritz; born April 22, 1892, Walker Township, Jasper County, Ind. Fanner. Entered service September 6, 1918, Rensselaer, Ind. Was sent to Camp Taylor, Ky. Assigned io 40th Company, 10th Training Battalion, 159th Depot Brigade. Died from pneumonia, October 14, 1918, in Base Hospital, Camp. Taylor, Ky. Buried in Catholic Cemetery, Medaryville, Pulaski Ind. । Gratner, George Wellington, Private Son of William and Emma Lewis Gratner: born December 14, 1898, near Rensselaer, Ind. Farmer. Called into service September 6, 1918, Rensselaer, Ind., and was sent to Camp Taylor, Ky. Assigned to 40th Company, 10th Training Battalion 159th Depot Brigade. Transferred to 28th Company, 7th Training Battalion, 159th Depot Brigade. Died from pneumonia November 20, 1918, Camp Taylor, Ky. Buried with military honors, Renselaer, Ind. , -
Knox, John McConnell Private Son of Thomas A. and Rachel Pierce Knox; born March 21, 1891, Chillicothe, 0. Removed to Rensselaer, Ind., in early life. Educated in University of Illinois. Traveling salesman. Enlisted in U. S. Quartermaster Corps, December 11, 1917, Chicago, Hl. Sent to Camp Joseph E. Johnston, Fla. Assigned to Office Workers Company No. 1, Went overseas in June, 1918, with Supply Company 312. Located near Grieves, France, where he remained until his death, December 5, 1918, from pneumonia. Buried in U. S. A. Cemetery, Grieves, France. Lanham, Raymond Private
Son of Benjamin and Margaret Lanham, (deceased); born August Was working on a farm in Jasper County, when he enlisted in Company M. 3rd infantry, Indiana National Guard (Battery C, 137th Field Artillery) May 30, 1917. Waa sent to Camp Shelby, Miss. Went overseas, June 1918. Participated in battles of St. Mihiel and Argonne Forest. Died from pneumonia, October 8, 1918, France. Buried, place unknown.
McGlynn, Dewey - • - Private Son of Domino and Emma Olive McGlynn; born November 8, 1898, Remington, Jasper County, Ind. Carpenter. Enlisted May 10,- 1917, Fort Wayne, Ind., and was sent to Ft. Thomas, Ky. Assigned to .Company G, 39th Infantry. Wen| overseas in May, 1918. Transferred to 10th Machine Gun Battalion Headquarters Detachment, _ Fourth Division. Participated in battles of the Marne, Verdun and the Argonne Forest. Killed in action October 15, 1918, Argonne-Meuse. Buried in the American Cemetery, Bois-de-Fays, Grave No. 2. * Murray, Arthur Dwight - Private Son of James and Lillian Murray; born November 18, 1895, in Jasper County} Ind. Farmer. Entered service August 30, 1918, Rensselaer, Ind., and was sent to Camp Sherman, O. Assigned to 31st Company, Bth Training Battalion, 158th Depot Brigade. Died from influenza, October 9, 1918, Base Hospital, Camp Sherman, O. Buried at Wheatfield, Jasper County, Ind.

Assigned to Techinal School, Carpentry, Harrison, Indianapolis. Died from pneumonia, January 4, 1918,, Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind. Buried in Medaryville, Pularici County, Ind.
Myers, Roy Austin U. S. Navy Son of Charles Chester and Melissa Belle Myers (both deceased); born March 8, 1896, in Cory, Clay County, Ind. Moved to Jasper County in 1915. Farmer. Enlisted in U. S. Navy, November 21, 1917, South Bend, Ind. Was sent to Great Lakes Naval Station, Ill., thence to Brooklyn; Navy Yards, N. Y., where he died from pneumonia, March 21, 1918. Buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Riley, Vigo County, Ind.

Regular Army, June 30, 1917, Ft Waynes Ind. Was sent to Ft Thomas, Ky., later transferred to Syracuse, N. Y. ' Overseas, September, 1917. Assigned to Scout Duty, Battalion Headquarters; 9th Infantry, A. E. F. Killed in action October 7, 1918, in Mont Blanc Sector. Killed in action November 10, 1918, near Waereghem, France. Buried Grave No. 158, Plot D, American military Cemetery, Waereghem, West Flanders, France. Warfel, Clark . . - Private Son of John R. and Ella Warfel (mother deceased); bprn May 8, 1891, White County, Ind. Moved to Jasper .County id 1911. Laborer. Called into service July 23, 1918, Rensselaer, Ind., and was sent to Camp Taylor, Ky. Assigned to sth Company,- 2nd Training Battalion, 159th Depot Brigade. Transferred to Camp McClellan, Ala. Assigned to Battery C. 35th Field Artillery. Died from pneumonia October 19, 1918, Camp McClellan. Buried in Rensselaer. Survived by widow, Lulu Warfel (Green) and two children, Willard and Ruth Warfel.
