SELLS HEMPHILL BARN.
John W. Hoyes has sold the front portion of the former Hemphill livery stable to William Walter, who •will take the same down and reerect it on his farm on the west side of Jasper county. The building was erected in 1896 by Mark Hemphill. Mr. Hemphill, who passed away several years ago, had just completed four years of service as treasurer of Jasper county, serving in the old court house which was torn down and replaced by our present beautiful structure. At the time of the erection of this barn, and for a good many years before and after uie erection of this bafn, the livery business was a very prosperous one and Rensselaer had three firms in the livery business, with a large number of horses and rigs that were constantly in use. . The Duvall livery statue is now the Rensselaer garage. It was a brick building, but has been greatly enlarged. The upper story was used as a residence and there was a business room on the lower floor along Washington street which was used by John R. Vanatta as a harness shop. The barn oft Van Rensselaer street was operated by Frank Biff, John Powell, John Knapp and others and was later purchased by Mr. White and was sold by Ms heirs to Kuboske & Walter, who last year wrecked the old building and built the fine garage building which is one of the best business room in thia city.
