Whiting, Ind., Aug. 14.—Uncle Sam’s fifth attempt to get some one to take the postmastership here was successful. Fred Kennedy, employed by the Standard Oil Company, finally accepted the $3,000-a----year job. Four other persons who were appointed to succeed George B. Jones, resigned after getting their commissions. Terre Haute, Ind., Aug. 14<—William (Jitney Bill) Wallace, who was arrested Thursday in a raid on his soft drink place by Federal officers, is in jail, unable to give $5,000 bond. Wallace has been anr««te. d eighteen times since March 28, 1918. He has been convicted three but has never served sentence. The officers said “white mule” whisky was found in the raid. In'order to ascertain whether or not the atmospheric conditions have any effect on the fire siren, recently installed by Chief Montgomery, daily Itests, starting Tuesday, August 17, will be made at twelve o’clock, noon, until further notice, hence pur citixens need not become unduly, excited when the siren sounds Tuesdaynoon. • ,/ .
