SHELBY. (The following news items were delayed in the mails and too late for last week.) George W. Dickey was in Lowell Tuesday morning on business. Miss Emma Caster of Chicago spent Sunday with home folks. Mrs. Sam Sirois and' Miss Pearl Brasket were Lowell visitors Tuesday.. > '' Clyde Dickey, wife, and son,‘were sight-seeing in .Lincoln Park, Sunday. Mrs. Julia Doty spent Saturday and Sunday - with relatives in Hammond. The Misses Ethel and Helen Burroughs are visiting relatives in Paxton, 111. ' ’ Miss Bessie Scritchfield, of Lowell spent the week end with Lylah Clement. Mrs. Wesley Brasket and daughter, Pearl, were shoppers in Chicago Wednesday. Marion Brown and family from near Valparaiso, spent Sunday- with the Burroughs family. Mrs. Adam Dorsch, Della Brasket and Ruby Sirois, who are on the sick list, are improving. Elmer Heaton of Moores Hill has been spending the past week with Calvin Burroughs and family. Mrs. George Mead/who is working in Hammond, spent a few days with her family in Shelby this week. Miss Adelia Fuller and Mrs. Jas. Black and son, Donald, departed Tuesday for a month’s visit with relatives in Connecticut. Mr. arid Mrs. Earl Sirois returned Saturday evening from tjieir honeymoon trip thru Michigan. We extend our hearty congratulations. Sam Shultz and John Strickhorn says it is perfectly shocking the number of oats there are to be shocked and in order to recover from the shock they came to town Tuesday afternoon and were again shocked by the discovery that sugar had slumped to 23 cents.
Bert Ahlgrim is home on a vacation. 0, A. Browhard and family spentSunday at Fair Oaks. Mis Louise Dorsch of Hammond spent Sunday here with relatives. Ernest Sirois of East -Chicago visited home folks here over SunSirs. J. Bowie and daughter, Jean, of Wheatfield, are visiting relatives at the Fuller house. Mrs. Robert Myers and two daughters of Champaign, 111., returned home last week from a visit here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Williams. The minister and congregation of the Church of Christ dismissed services last Sunday evening and attended services at the Shelby M. E. Church and were well pleased with the fellowship extended. Max Dickey was six years old last Monday, Aug. 2, and a number of youngsters gave little Max a birthday surprise. Refreshments were served and Max grew about a foot when he learned he was big enough to go to school. . The following members of Shelby Lodge attended, Rebekah lodge at Lowell last Tuesday evening: Mrs. J. Doty, Mrs. Ida Clement, Mrs. Chas. Lee, Mrs. Jesse Latta, Mrs. Chas. Mr. and Mrs. A. Konovpky were county seat visitors Saturday. Weekly orchestra practice night at Henry Swart’s Thursday evening week. One of the largest crowds of the season attended the dance here Saturday evening. Mrs. Na'Uman of Peru, Hl., ,is here visiting with her. son, H. F. Nauman and wife. s . . , Miss Tilton of Rensselaer visited over Sunday with her grandparents, Judge Greve and wife. Ranny Halleck, who has been working in North Carolina all summer, returned home Friday. Fred Koester and family of Lansing, HL, have returned to their home here and will remain for the present. ' . , Mr. P. W. Halleck returned to Highland, Ind., Monday a.- m., having been home last week with three mashed fingers. Albert Rosing of Kankakee, HL, came Saturday for a few days visit with friends. Al is employed by the International Harvester Co., at Kanka Bucher of Wheatfield, Ind., was called here early Monday morning by Dr. Hewitt, as Doc. had an attack of heart trouble, but is getting along fine now. ; Mrs. Hannah Fairchild and daughter, Sadie, returned from a two weeks’ visit with Mrs. Fairchild’s two sisters, one living De Queen, Ark., and the other at Penalosa, Ka*., .this being their first visit in 'years., • A very pleasant birthday party was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Hocknfey Saturday evening in honour of their daughter, Ethel. It pays to graduate. The Sunday school social was a success. The Blues gave the Reds a good feed of ice cream and cake and everybody had a good time. Mrs. Luther Albin, who returned from Montana, is very sick. Her daughter, Grace, from the Lake Side hospital, is taking care of her. We sincerely wish for a speedy recovery. It is rumored around that two well respected young people have joined matrimony, but we are not real sure.. Just let’s find out for sure before getting your cans ready, then watch the bunch. Oh, my, you two. The women are trying to organize a league of women voters, having not had a large crowd they are going to give those that were not there another chance Friday afternoon. Everybody welcome regardless of your politics. Mrs. Kerr’s grandfather stopped in a while after attending a funeral at South Bend, but departed for home on the evening train, but is very proud of his new great grandson. He even brought his brother along to look them over. Jacob Pittsley, the school janitor of ladt year, blew into town from White Pigeon, Mich. Jake has done fine while • there and says he is now in good • shape for the new term of school and wishes to get his janitorship back, being as there is a new principal. The chicken culling demonstration was held Wednesday morning with a nice pleasant crowd. 104 chickens were culled at Dugglebys and they found 42 hens that had never laid an egg. It pays to know the secret, and all that were present learned how. Mrs. John Cooper was good and Blue and Jack Smith and many others say it was worth while. That county agent is 0. K.

Alice Meyers and brother, Arthur, spent Sunday at Joe Salnn s. D. C. Smith and J. Hall of Frankfort, Indiana, spent Thursday at A. P. Huntington’s. A good many people are picking pickles these days. They are not yielding very heavy. ‘ The Liberty Club did not meet with Mrs. W. Meyers but will meet the coming Wednesday. „ M. Zufall and family returned Saturday from their visit with ms parents at West Lebanon. Paul Stalbaum sprained his ankle quite badly falling from an apple tree last Wednesday. Clarence Bridgeman and family called on Ernest Tomlinson and family of Kniman Sunday afternoon. Clarence Bridgeman and Will Tomlinson were rather busy men hunting a threshhig machine Saturda Threshing of wheat and rye has begun. Henry Meyers, Jim Smith, Millers, Hoovers, Browns and Bill .Meyers have threshed with Clarence Hurley’s machine. Guy Barnard has been traveling around Walker Center this week looking after his hay lands Bill Tomlinson and John Pettet have been putting up timothy hay for him. ■ '

Saturday evening, Aug. 14. Everybody welcome. Mrs. Paul Cyphers returned home Sunday from Gary where she had been visiting hex' daughter, Mrs. Albert DeFries. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Boswmkle, Miss Joyce Cyphers and Joe Henseler attended the-movies at Lowell Sunday evening. Mrs. Austin Dexter went Monday morning to Crown Point for a few days’ visit with her daughter, Mrs. Dan Williams. Chas. Fuller has purchased a Studebaker touring car. Chas, thinks now he will be able to beat some fellow out of his best girl.. The evangelistic meetings being held here at the church by the Misses I. Cunningham and L. McGregor are very well attended and highly appreciated. I Our local painters, Milton Cobb and Thos. Spitler, have given the church a new coat of paint, whicp adds wonderfully to the appearance of the town.

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hilliard and Mr. and Mrs. Warren White and family motored Sunday to Valparaiso. Joe beat Warren over there about forty-five minutes. Joe got across the track ahead of three freight trains and Warren had to stay in town until the trains got feed and water. The entertainment given last week for the benefit of the M. E. church was well attended and Prof. Rolla Tallcott, of Valparaiso University, delighted the audience with his humorous character sketches. His representations of the various musical instruments was especially pleasing. •
