Mrs. Will Shallbaum and children visited Mrs. John DeArmond of Tefft, Wednesday.. . Mr. and Mrs. Firman Pettet and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Herehman spent Sunday at John Pettet’s. John Michaels og Kniman is venting his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Pettet, this week. . Mrs. Ellen Cooper, who is visiting her daughter at Fair Oaks, is much improved from her illness. Vincent Stallbaum was home sick the latter part of last week from his work on the stone road near Goodland. . . ~ . Mr. F. M. Lilly and family and Mrs. Henry Paradise who is visiting them, took dinner at A. P. Huntington’s Monday. . Mrs. Dr. Smith and daughter Portia of Georgetown, Illinois, are visiting Mrs. Smith’s mother, Mrs. J. J. Tomlinson for a few days. Mrs. Lee Jennings has brought her son Robert from the hospital m Hammond to Lowell for treatment. Lee Jennings went Sunday to Lowell to visit Mrs. Jennings and son Robert. Billy Wenrick visited his nephew, Pete Cooper who is farming where John Cooper fanned before he was killed in the auto accident. Mrs. Cooper has been visiting her son and she returned home with Mr. Wenrick. The Victory Club met with Mrs. M. Zufall Wednesday, and an enjoyable time was had. A nice lunch was served. A new member, Mr. Will Clinton, joined. The next meeting will be August 4, with Mrs. Will Meyers.

The Bible class is discontinued till further notice. C. R. Peregrine is going around with a smile on his face since going to church regular. Chas. Stalbaum is stumping for Harding and John Finn for Cox. Who will win you? F. W. Fisher just landed in town with his new Studebaker car. Darn them old Fords, anyway. Walter French sure gets his family to church in good season since having his car. Good for Walter. Mr. and Mrs. John Duggleby, Venia and Stanley left Monday for lowa, after spending three weeks visiting here. Miss Harris from Mt. Air who is the new principal was here getting the records and inspecting the school, well pleased, too. John Mannan who was to stay in Michigan all summer returned home Saturday. He says the weather is too cold and rainy. The blues of the S. S. will entertain the reds with a social Saturday evening, Aug. 7. Let everybody come and have a good time. A brother of Mrs. Kerr who was
injured in an auto wreck Saturday night passed away Sunday evening at if p. m., at Spring Valley hospital. There will be a homecoming at Tefft church, Sunday, - Aug. 22. Let everybody come, basket dinner at the river. Dr. Davis will be with us at the time. Mrs. and Mrs. John Dunn have their grand ch illdren visiting them from Wichita, Kansas. Also their sons Paul from Kansas and Herschel from Detroit. Mrs. Albert of Streater, who was at her daughter’s, Mrs. Afi Kerr, received a message that her son was seriously injured so left for Spring Valley, Sunday. The Army worm is playing havock with oats on the Miller s Basmussen farm. What is going to happen next to the hard working farmers a strike we presume. The ladies are requested to attend a meeting at Tefft Friday afternoon, to organize a legion of women voters, as every woman is expected to vote this fall it is to their interest to attend this meeting. There will be a poultry culling demonstration at A. Duggleby*s, Wednesday, Aug. 4. Mr, Jones and staff of Purdue will be here. Everybody is welcome. Don’t keep your boarders, just layers, come and learn how. , Bill Jasperson and Chas. Duggleby have purchased the Minor Garage at Wheatfield and take possession Sept. Ist, after the threshing season is over, then get your tin cans ready for Bill for the wedding bells will be ringing. The woman who will not register, will not vote, will not take an interest in politics, is not out of poltics, but is helping make politics bad; she is turning over her share of responsibility to those who would politics for evil or ignorant purposes. Let us get busy. In regard to an article which appeared in your paper last week about the city boy not being able to find eggs in the country until they began running around, we are taking the opportunity to remind the reporter at Tefft, that those eggs must have been laid and were being set on before the city boy arrived at Tefft. So evidently the joke is not on the city boy, but the country fellow who did not hunt his eggs.

Mrs. Leona Campbell started Saturday on an extended visit to Canada. A party-of friends from Chicago visited last week with Mr. and Mrs. Ed Benson. .... John DeFries is here taking his annual two weeks’ vacation as mail carrier in the city of Chicago. Two nieces from Chicago visited here last week with their uncle and aunt, A. Pewestorf and wife. Mr. and Mrs. John VanMerten of Tinley Park, DI., visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Matt Boswinkle. Mr. and Mrs. John Von See and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Von See of Hammond visited here Saturday with friends. Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Cyphers and daughter Gladys, Mrs. Peter Luchene, Jake Luchene and Alice _Luchene of Hammond visited relatives here Sunday.

R. A Plowman is the new clerk at Dickey’s Store. m The new paneling on the Fuller House makes a good apearance. Deborah Bowie of Wheatfield returned home Saturday from a ten days’ visit with relatives here. Mrs. Oehmich of Chicago came Monday for a visit with her parents Mr. and Mrs. John DeFries. Sam Sirois has a force of men putting on a new roof on his residence and Sam says he don’t want any leaks during these dry times.

Mrs. Claude Burton and children are visiting her mother at .Momence. The Mulder family and Miss Etta Lee attended the Chautauqua at Rensselaer last Sunday. A party of tourists stopped Sunday at Hoag’s resort, west of here, and went bathing in the Kankakee river and one of the ladies of the party was taken with cramps and drowned before assistance could reach her. The deceased was from Chicago.

DE MOTTE A big crowd attended the dance here last Saturday evening. Lee Myers and family of Rensselaer visited the Yeagley families here Sunday Paul Halleck went to Highland, 111., Monday to work for Libby, McNiel & Libby. Mrs. W. F. Granger and family of Chicago are spending a week here with Mr. and Mrs. George Dolsen. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Curten and family and Postmaster Effie Fairchild attended the Chautauqua at Rensselaer Sunday. Mrs. Auton Konovsky and two sons of Chicago came Sunday for a visit at the home of her brother, Al Konovsky and wife. A sister of George Dolson and her two children of Los Angeles, California, came Saturday for a visit with George and family. Mrs. Hanna Fairchild and daughter Sadie were called last Friday to Penalosa, Kans., by the serious illness of a sister of Mrs. Fairchild. Mrs. Fred Wolff left last Thursday morning for Denver, Colorado, where she will visit with her husband until the school vacation is ended. * . __
Mrs. Lizzie Teldman and Mrs. Harry Feldman visited over Sunday with friends at Kankakee, Hl., going via train, and Harry and George motored over Sunday and brought the ladies back. An exciting game of base ball played here last Sunday between the Bushwhackers of north of town and the DeMotte team, resulting in the defeat of the Bushwhackers by the score of 18 to 14. Attendance, 961. Mrs. Lena Gambel and two children of Mishawaka, and Mrs. Berthat Burbett of Detroit returned to their homes after a week’s visit herewith Dr. and Mrs. Homer Hewitt. Mrs. Gambel and Mrs. Burkett are cousins of Mrs. Hewitt. I The following corps of teachers have been employed for the De Motte school this term: Margaret Marshall, principal, Lester Templin, George Hammerton, Lottie Porter, for the high school; and Grace Knapp, Margaret Delehanty, and Mrs. Charity Wolff for the grades. Mr. and Mrs. Fred MtGlurn of Wheatfield township were motoring through here Sunday evening, and when passing the church some boys threw a piece of pump pipe at the wheels of the car and the pipe went in between the spokes of the wheel and stopped the car suddenly, jarring the occupants and doing some damage to the car. Such work should be stopped.' Little dirty tricks like this is not a good recommendation for the state highway. Boys, you were seen in the act by good responsible citizens, and only for the respectability of your parents, you are not placed 1 under arrest at this time.

Arthur Freshour of Monticello visited at the Mac Coppess home for several days this week. , Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Wackmtz took dinner with Mrs. Alice Pogue and daughter Nina, Sunday. Mass Grace Schoonover and brother Charles went to Wolcott Sunday for a visit with relatives. The Willing Workers Society will meet at the home of Mrs. Ray Roland, Wednesday of this week. Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Emel and children of New Castle are spending a few days with the Rolands. Sunday school at Independence next Sunday at two o’clock and church at three in the aftepioon. Rev. Walter Bush will preach. Everybody cordially invited-. Come, we need the crowd.
