BRIEFLY TOLD.
The Ontario amusement tax has been increased 25 per cent. Hudson Bay Company's vessels carried thirteen million tons of food to French ports dring the war. The first vessel to sail from the Hudson Bay post was in 1668. Immigrants are arriving from South America in large numbers, most of them bearing cash and letters of credit valued at thousands of dollars. A train robber, recently killed, maintained a business manager to look after his affairs. The kaiser is writing, with his pen, a history of the war. Emeralds have become the rarest and most expensive of precious stones. An airplane flying across the Canadian border at Niagara Falls was stopped by. *a customs officer and duty collected. Sea birds devour a great number of fish, many birds eating six or seven fair sized mackerel in a single meal. To save two pet dogs deserted when a schooner sank near the Azores, the crew of one lifeboat rowed back more than one-quarter of a mile in a rough sea. Coal and sugar are exported to Canada from this country in great quantities in spite of the fact that there is frequently shortage here. Canada always seems to be sufficiently supplied with American sugar. The pay of a Negro janitor in any of the departments of the government in Washington is higher than the well-trained white schoolteacher. »

COUNTY EDUCATIONAL NOTES.
The joint commencement for Hanging Grove and Milroy townships was held at the Milroy church last Saturday night. The roads were good and the evening cooL This contributed with the many other factors to make this a very effective commencement Ex-Coun-ty Supt.* L. H. Hamilton gave an excellent addres before a class of eleven graduates. Mr. Hamilton, in a very clear, concise and earnest manner, presented a message that met with unusual commendations from those who neard the address. The mastering idea that colored the speech was that the class of 1920 was facing the big reconstruction problems and to dispose of these big problems successfully it was essential to the graduates that they build up strong bodies and equip these bodies with strong minds. The Jensen orchestra consisting of Alex Jensen and wife with their three son, Leslie, Louis and Russel, furnished excellent music for the occasion. Miss Marie Bailey gave a surprise number by way of the valedictory that was pleasing to the large audience. Trustees Poole and Wood presented the diplomas to the classes in a nice manner. Mr. Poole spoke briefly to toe graduates urging them to receive a larger diploma from high school in four years to come. The interest manifested by the school friends from both townships was very promising. The church was filled to its capacity and an audience of an equal size stood air the windows. This week marks three commencements. On Thursday Walker township will hold its commencement at Kniman. Prof. R. A. Talcott of Valparaiso University will deliver the commencement address. On Friday the Jordan township commencement will be held at Union. Prof. Thomas F. Moran of Purdue University will deliver the address. The Jensen orchestra will furnish music for both of these commencements. On Saturday the Barkley township commencement will be held at Barkley church. Prof. Moran will give the address at this place.
LOTS OF GOOD PEOPLE WHO RODE IN THE FRANKLIN ARE NOW CRAZY
to know how Rensselaer came out in the national show-the-car contest It will be some time before the far-west reports can be heard from and when the winners are announced we wil probably be informed that we “also ran.” The trouble with us, we didn't think the big fellows would get out and work for $500.00. Anyhow we kept in the limelight, and received several compliments from headquarters ,one suggesting us as a possible choice to tour the country giving economy tests. Dr. Rainier of Remington got the world’s champion car. It carried more people, more miles in a day, on less gas than any 6 cylinder ever made. Believe we forgot to tell the town that Harry Watson, Mr. Kitchings and Frank Hill are new Essex owners. And Lee Myers, Bert Courtright and Geo. Ade are new Oldsmobile owners. And say, have you seen that Hudson super-six touring limousine that we got for Mr. Abraham Leopold? It’s the very latest thing in closed bodies and undoubtedly the finest ear ever sold in town. Tell us what you want and well do the rest. THOMPSON & KIRK. ■ _ Farm* lasso* for sal* at Ba Bp pubiiaan grate aM eaA aaHb

Recently, one cold morning, several women were waiting in a north side drug store until the street car came. A colored woman entered and asked the druggist for a certain kind of qH. He went to the rear of the store where he kept the stock, and coming said: Tt is $2.25 an ounce. How much do you want?” The colored woman was plainly disconcerted, at the, high price. After a second’s hesitation her face brightened. as she said earnestly: “Maybe a drop would be enough.” Just as seriously the druggist replied,. “Lady, we don't sell It by th* drop.” The ludicrous side of the situation struck the women spectators and they began to laugh. One of them remarked, “Well, at that price I think a smell would be sufficient."—lndian spoils News. 4 /
