14 MINES IDLE ON MONON ROAD
■’(According to a report just received here from the Indiana Coal Trade Bureau, of Terre Haute, fourteen mmes wore, idle on the Chicago, Indianapolis and Louisville (Monon) railroad last Saturday on account of car shortage, the daily production ot these mines being 9,024 tons. On the ' Big Four mines were idle with a daily production of 4,650 tons. Altogether, a total of eightyeight bituminous coal mines with a total production of -58,015 tons were idle on that day., The present Car shortage at the Indiana mines is attributed to an accumulation of unfavorable circumstances. The unauthorized switchmen’s strike and the unprecedented volume of freight ' business, which has compelled the railroads to appeal to the interstate commerce commission for the adoption .of restrictions upon freight shipments until congestion is relieved, are considered largely responsible. Embargoes have made it difficult for the Indiana mines to obtain empty cars and the coal which they have been able to ship has been delayed to a considerable extent through the necessity of rerouting it. No immediate relief is in sight as it will take some time for suffeient empty caTS to arrive at the mines.
