UNSCRUPULOUS POLITICS DENOUNCED BY GEN. WOOD
Unscrupulous politicians who stoop to methods of trickery and deceit in order to gain votes’ ar* dangerous to the nation and should be dealt with as characters who seek to advance their own interest* at the expense of the national solidarity and safety, in the view of Leonard Wood, candidate for th* Republican piusWaaHs! nomination. In an address last week during his Ohio tour Wood roundly denounced
CAN, RENBBELAER, IND.
the persons who have resorted to such methods of campaigning. “Those politicians who are seeking to gain votes by arraying class against class ar* never loyal Americans,” said Wood. "They are always self-seekers at the expanse of the nar tional solidarity and national safety.” This is the way the general disposed of reports received from Nebraska that his enemies were resorting to the same kind of trickery that they used against him in Minnesota, Illinois and South Dakota, in publishing untruthful statements relar tive to Wood’s religious beliefs. Nation Must Have Religion. Continuing his repl/ Wood said: “Thia is equally true of those who try to array one religious group against another. We know no religious distinction in this country and should knew none. The only thing we should enforce on our people is that each and every man, woman and child shall have a religion which they live up to and adhere to There is nothing more Important to a nv tien than religion. We do not question the right of the people to follow any religious, group, but we do urge them to be faithful to their chosen doctrines. A nation without religion is a nation in its moral decadence and moral decadences always precede physical and industrial decadences. So let there be no harping on religious questions.”
