At the dose of the war with Spain the American government obtained possession of Porto Rico, Guam and the Philippine* agreeing to pay Spela 920,000,000 and give Spanish ships spedal trading privileges in the Philippines for ten years. Neither state* hood nor citizenship was promised te any of the islands taken over and they are governed as territorial possession*.
