Date-Growing in California.

Date palms grown from shoots that were Imported from Algiers are now abundantly bearing fruit in the Coachella valley of California. Tn its growing, the date crop is indeed picturesque. As a staple, however, it is hardly so well known in America as in the Levant, where for untold centuries it has been almost as important as wheat. Though it would doubtless take more than numerous dates and olives to make a Garden of Eden, still these are supposed to have been factors in that delectable condition of things. In midwinter it i’ pleasant to think of such a crop as this growing near a town called Mecca in the United States. -
