BLOOD SHED IN HAMMOND STRIKE
S KILLED AND IS WOUNDED IN BATTLE BETWEEN POLICE AND STRIKERS. Hammond, Ind., Sept. 9^-— The trouble between the thousand employes of the Standard Steel Car company and the police of Hf™" mond became more acute today than at any time since the present strike. .. The strikers, led by women, have become very abusive and have threatened to destroy the property of the steel company. This Tuesday morning when the police ordered the strikers to disperse and the women to go to their homes, their order was answered by the throwing of clubs and other missiles in an attempt to strike the policeThe conduct of the strikers, assisted by the women, became so unbearable that the police found itvnecessary to lltic guns on the mOD, Mgjnot until five of the strikers had been killed and fifteen more wounded were they able to quell the not. It is thought that Governor Goodrich will send a sufficient armed cuard to Hammond and that the city may again be placed under martial law.
