Monster petition presented to congress draws first fire of opposition in senaite although opponents concede it will probably win—as sentiment sweeps country for justice to those who served. Some congressmen concede additional pay legislation must be granted soon.” Following are extracts from the article: “When Senator Calder, of New York, filed in the senate a petition of 6,100,000 Americans favoring six months’ pay for all who served, it served Ito bring forcibly to the attention of congress that millions of law abiding people don’t consider the government has been liberal enough in recognizing thfe valiant service and sacrifices of the soldiers, saiiilors and marines in making possible the glorious victory in the world war. “A similar petition was lattso filed in the house of representatives by Representative LaGuardia, of New York. “While no definite action 'has yet been taken on this petition or upon any- additional pay legislation, the 'brief debate was enlightening in showing the arguments wdjich the service men must overcome to accomplish success.” -
