Russia’s Greatest. Ruler.

St. -Petersburg, the modern capital t of Russia, now known ‘as, Petrograd, was founded In 1703 by Peter the Great, who died 194 years ago. Pe- < ter first built a small hut for himself and a few’ wooden hovels. The majority of nobles, however, preferred that Moscow should remain the seat of government, but Peter was determined to build a new capital, and,, in 1711 he laid, with his own'hands, the foundation of his palace,' which was built of brick. Peter was an extraordinary character and Russia’s ‘rise to a great power was entirely due to hIS genius.
